New Bark Town and Route 29
By Iceduck

Here it is. The start of a big project to cover the whole of GS. This guide will tell you how to start off the game effectively.

You shouldn't have too many problems with this bit of the game, especially if you've played RBY. When you start the game, it asks for the time. Put in the hour. Note that this means the hour of a DIGITAL clock - five to elevens hour would be 10. It then asks how many minutes, which is straightforward enough. Don worry if its a few minutes out. It doesn't spoil the game if you e whole HOURS out.

Your Room

You find yourself in your room. There's a PC in your room. You'll be using PCs a lot in the game, but there's nothing special about this one. Go downstairs, and you'll see your mother. Shell ask you what day it is. Although it doesn't matter if you give her the wrong day, several things depend on the day, making things difficult if you give her the wrong one.

After telling her what day it is, she'll give you your Pokémon Gear, or PokéGear for short. This useful device tells you the time, day and doubles as a phone. It'll have even more uses as the game goes on.

Having collected your PokéGear, your adventure begins. Prof Elm wants to see you. He lives to the south of your house, but he won be there. Hell be working in his lab! The lab is to the left of your house, and has a long-haired boy looking through the window. What's he up to? Who knows.

Prof Elm's Lab

Go inside, and Prof Elm will explain to you that his friend, Mr. Pokémon, has made a discovery. He wants you to meet Mr. Pokémon and bring his discovery back. But to do that, you'll have to cross long grass, and who knows what kind of creatures lurk there? Only one thing for it - you'll have to take a Pokémon for protection.

If you've played Red or Blue, you'll know what's going to happen. You have three Pokémon to choose from - Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile. Your choice won matter this early on, but Cyndaquil will be more useful in the second gym. Also, you'll find a Grass type quite early on in the game, and there are many Water types. But the choice is yours. Choose a different one to your friends - you can then breed them (see the breeding Guide in this section) and get all three.

Agh! Long Grass!

Crikey! A Battle

Leave Prof Elms lab, and his aide will give you a potion! A potion restores 20 HP to any Pokémon. To use it, select Pack (during a fight or whilst walking around) and select it, select Use and choose the Pokémon you want to use it on. There's nothing left to do in New Bark Town now, so make your way to Route 29.

Once you come to the end of the path from New Bark Town, the first thing you'll notice is the long grass. If you've played Pokémon before, you'll know what this is about - wild Pokémon fights! These are slightly more interesting than the RBY fights, because different Pokémon attack at different times.

Some Pokémon, like Pidgey, sleep at night (don't worry - they won fall asleep if they're on your team). Others, like HootHoot, only come out at night. Then there's Pokémon like Rattata that are out all the time. To catch all the Pokémon on Route 29, you'll have to visit during the day and during the night. Here's a table showing which Pokémon you can find and when.

Night Uncommon None None Very

You can catch Pokémon yet, so just train the one you've already got.

Item Ball!

In the top-right corner of Route 29, you'll find an Item Ball. You'll be seeing many of these in the future. This one contains another Potion!

To the west, there's an unusual tree. If you press B whilst standing next to it, you get a Berry! The tree grows a new Berry every day, so come back if you want another one.

Route 46

A Berry is similar to a Potion. It only restores 10 HP, but you can give it to the Pokémon of your choice, and it'll use it whenever its needed. You won even miss a go! NOTE: The Pokémon you choose at the start will already be holding a Berry.

Walk to the right, and keep going. You'll jump off the ledge! You can jump down from them, but not back up.

Anyway, keep going and you'll find a small building. Go inside, and keep going until you reach the other side. This is Route 46. Its not very interesting, but there are some new Pokémon here.

This isn't a very good place for training, due to Geodude's resistance to Normal attacks, but its a brilliant place for capturing rare Pokémon when you get some Pokéballs.

There's nothing really left to do here, now. Talk to people for hints, tips and information. This is true of every area in the game. Once your starting Pokémon is at :L7 or so, its time to go to Cherrygrove City!
