Ruby-Sapphire – IV’s

IV’s, also known as DV’s – the Building blocks of your Pokémon. What do they stand for you may ask? Well Individual values, these help determine (With EV’s and Nature) if your Pokemon’s stats will reach their max. They also determine your Pokemon’s hidden power; they’ve been around since every single Pokémon game, although it has been changed in RS.

Okay, let’s begin. Your Pokémon can have any IV from 0 – 31, 0 being the lowest, and 31 being the highest. This is for every stat.

Let’s take an example – Metagross. Let’s say it has a helping nature for attack, and it’s been fully EV trained (If you don’t know what EVS are then click here). Its max attack is 407, pretty high eh? But wait you may say! My Metagross, who I’ve EV trained and has an adamant Nature and it only has 400 attack! You lie! You’re the worst person out there! I’m going home to cry! Boo-hoo-boo-hooo..

Err. Calm down. This is where IV’s come in; your Metagross probably has a 24 in attack. How did I know that? It’s simple. 31 is the IV you need to get to have a 407 attack, and you have a 400 attack, take away 7 from 31 and you get 24? See.

Look at this table -

As you can see, it works out like the Max attack Minus How many stat points you need to the max = your IV.

So where do IV’s coming from? Well, when you catch a Pokémon in a wild it has random IV’s for all stats. For Breeding, it’s random what IV the baby inherits, for each stat it might be 25% the Mothers, or 25% the fathers, or 50% a random stat. You can check what IV’s the mother and father has with IV calculators.

Anyway, that’s it from me. Remember – if it isn’t Misdreavus, it’s not cute.

Except, Metagross' 31 IV Attack is 405 :< Not only that, but there's an IV thing where 1 IV = 2 Points if you have an Adamant nature.

The way you explained it means we have to wait till max level to find out our pokémon's IVs.
