FireRed, LeafGreen Walkthrough: Part 2 | Viridian City, Route 22, Route 2, Viridian Forest
Viridian City

Heal your Pokemon. Before we start exploring further, we go to the Pokemart first. The shopowner asks you to bring a parcel to Prof Oak. Take it, and go back to Pallet Town. After you give him the parcel, he gives you and your rival a Pokedex as well as five Pokeballs to catch Pokemon with. You can also ask a map from Gary's sister now, and when you return to Viridian City, you can buy more Pokeballs.

There is not much more to do in Viridian City. The gym is closed, and will stay closed until you've defeated the seven other gym leaders. A few people give you some advice, and there's a man cut off from the world by water and bushes. We'll get to him later. If you try to leave through the north exit now, the old man will stop you and after showing you how to catch a Pokemon give you the Teachy TV. Go back to Route 1, and catch Pidgey and Rattata. Train them a bit, and then go to the west of Viridian City.

You don't need to go here yet until you get all badges, etc, but you can get some pretty cool Pokemon here. Catch a Mankey, it will be very handy in the near future, especially if you started with Charmander. Don't worry about Spearow - you'll be able to get it much easier later on. However, don't go past the first field if you haven't trained yet, because there you will meet your rival again.

Strategy:There's a few possibilities here. For Pidgey, Mankey or (if you've skipped ahead) Pikachu can handle it. The starter depends on what you already have. Pikachu is good against Squirtle if you had it, Spearow against Bulbasaur, and all are not too hard if you have Pokemon that have been trained well.

After this battle, you can continue down the route to the Pokemon League building. However, you can't get any further without the badges, so let's go back and go to

Route 2

This route isn't very interesting right now - all Pokemon can elsewhere be found easier. We'll return here later when we have Cut, and then there's more interesting stuff, but for now, go to Viridian Forest.

Lots of new Pokemon here. Get Caterpie Weedle and Pikachu, the others are evolutions that are stronger if you evolve them yourself. Weedle for a mediocre bug with good bug attacks, and Caterpie because Butterfree learns some nice attacks to use against Brock. Pikachu will be your only Electric type for a while, and will therefore be useful. You can get a Pokeball, two potions and an antidote here as well. You'll meet several trainers here. A list.

Most of these shouldn't be too hard to defeat. The Metapods and Kakunas don't know any attacks, so use them to easily train a weak Pokemon. Zigzag through the grass, and you'll eventually reach the end of the forest. You can find a hidden potion in front of the last trainer.
