Lavender Town

After all the stress of THAT tunnel, we now arrive in a more serene town - or at least, so it seems. There's a couple of interesting things here. First of all, here you can find the first shop where you can buy Great Balls. These work better in catching Pokémon than normal Pokeballs, and so I recommend you stock up on those in the future. Second of all, in one of the houses here you can find the Name Rater. You can change the nicknames of your Pokémon here. Wow. Mr. Fuji's house is also here, but he seems to be gone now. Last, the enormous tower dominating this place. This "Pokémon Tower" is the last resting place for Pokémon. One problem, though - the ghosts are haunting it. You might be able to figure out what's wrong, if you just had a Silph Scope. Hmmm... For now, we'll go to the west, to Route 8. When you go to the south, you'll eventually bump into the Snorlax we met at Route 11, so we'll leave that for now.

Okay, there's a number of trainers here, none of them very difficult if you've been training your Pokémon (which you might want to do anyway, since we've got a few difficult gym battles coming up). To catch Pokémon here, you will need to use Cut to get to the grass in the middle of the area, the Vulpix or Growlithe will come in handy during the upcoming gym battle. Alternatively, you could simply wait, since on the next route, you can catch it without going through the hassle.

Now, if you want to catch a Mew, don't battle the last gambler that is facing the house. Instead, walk as close as you can to the house (on the tile directly below it), and enter it from there. Don't step down, or the gambler will battle you! Whenever you leave this house in the future, go directly left or right instead of down as well until you are ready for this trick.

Since you still can't exit to Saffron City (what's wrong with those thirsty guards?), enter that house, and through the Underground Path again. You'll end up on Route 7. There are no trainers or new Pokémon here, so just go west to Celadon City.

Celadon City

This is a large city, and we've got a lot to do here. First of all, go to the large building in the west of the city, the Pokemart. There are lots of things here that you can only buy here, so let's get those first. First of all, there are a lot of TMs here, that I'm not going to list here. On the fourth floor, you can get evolution stones, to evolve a number of Pokémon, so buy those when/if you need them. Buy a Poké Doll here as well, you're going to need it in Saffron City. On the top floor, you can get drinks. Bring one of each to the girl on the roof, who will give you TMs for them. Take one of them (it doesn't matter which) to one of the guards guarding Saffron City. He'll take it, and all the guards will now allow you access to Saffron. We'll get to that place later. The TMs you can buy here are:

Now go to the Celadon Mansion, the other large building here. When you enter from the front, you'll be able to talk to the creators of the game, although you won't get anything yet here until you have a completed Pokédex. Go around the Pokecentre however, and you will be able to enter the mansion from behind. If you climb up, and have a free slot on your team, a man will give you an Eevee for free! You can evolve this Pokémon in three different ones, depending on the evolution stone you use. Just put it in your box for now, though, so that you won't have to worry about that now. We've got badges to collect first!

That later. First go to the restaurant in the bottom row of houses, and one of the people in there will give you a coin case. Talk to the people in the house next of it to learn that there is no secret switch behind the poster in the Game Corner.. yeah, right. Go to the Game Corner. In the right house, you can exchange your game coins for rare Pokémon. An Abra is easy if you haven't caught it yet, and you can also buy the rare Dratini (the latter not in Yellow, though). More important, though, you can buy a Porygon here, and only here. You'll have to win (or buy) a lot of coins for that, though. You can buy Dragon Rage, Hyper Beam or Substitute here, as well. A full list of Pokémon is below:

In the Game Corner itself, you can gamble and buy coins. Something more interesting, however, is that Rocket standing in front of that poster. Hmm... When you talk to him, he'll fight you.

Nothing you can't handle. After you've defeated him, he'll be gone, and you can look at the poster. Press the hidden switch, and some stairs down will appear. You can now go down into the Game Corner Basement. More on that later. Let's go to the gym first, and defeat Erika. Have a Pokémon with Cut ready to get into and through the gym, and a Fire Pokémon will come in handy. If your Pokémon can't handle it yet, skip ahead of this section to the Game Corner Basement, and return later.

There are only girls in this gym.. fun! The trainers here use Grass Pokémon, which are easily beaten by Fire Pokémon, so you're lucky if you started with Charmander, or have caught a Vulpix or Growlithe. Ice types would also be helpful, but you (probably) don't have those yet. Flying and Bug work too, so don't worry if you've got a team full of Pidgeys and Spearows. And since most of the Pokémon here are part Poison type as well (only the Tangela aren't), you can use Ground Pokémon as well! To reach Erika, you need to use Cut, and Erika will be the trainer second from the left. As said, if you're not strong enough yet, do the Game Corner Basement first before coming here. After you beat Erika, you get a Rainbow Badge and TM21. Woo. Heal your Pokemon, and go back to the Game Corner.

You will not be able to reach the last Rocket until you get the lift key, but I've listed it for completeness already (especially since I'm bound to forget otherwise). Pick up the Escape Rope, and go down the stairs.

First, go down the next set of stairs. There's loads of goodies here, but we'll get to those later.

The hardest part here is navigating through the maze. Before it, pick up TM10 (Double-Edge). Then go to the place where the arrows lead two ways. Go right, and take the thingie down that's slightly to the right. Walk up and to the right to get a Rare Candy. After that, return to that place, and take the left arrow. Go down (you have no other choice), and then go back left and down. Walk around the wall, and take the second arrow from below. You will end up in front of a Rocket. Then take the next stairs down.

Take the HP UP and the TM02 (Razor Wind). Battle the Rocket and pick up the Lift Key. Then go two floors up, to the one with the large maze. It's time to grab a lot of goodies (be sure to have room), and get to the end. You may want to heal your Pokémon if it's needed.

First, take the bottom arrow. Walk up and around the wall, and then go the only way where you don't touch arrows, and pick up the Nugget. Then step on another arrow to the left. By going down and to the left, you can pick up a Moon Stone, and by following the arrow to the right TM07, Horn Drill. Go to the right and down, and take one of the arrows to the side. Go to the left arrow, and then go right and down. If you want to leave the maze, take the top arrow. For the last goodie, take the bottom one, then go as far as possible to the left, and then right, and take the arrow up. You'll get to a Super Potion when you go a bit down and then right. By going up from there, and from there again up, you end up near the place where you found TM07. Go to the end of the maze from there. If you need to leave from here, just take the other exit from this part, which will lead you right back to the beginning. Take the stairs up.

You can pick up a Hyper Potion here. And more experience, of course. These trainers really shouldn't have bothered you up to here. If they have, I recommend you train some more. Anyway, go back to the stairs, and enter the elevator. Go to the fourth floor (the first floor will lead you to the room you couldn't reach in the beginning, with one Rocket). Before you can enter this room, you will need to either defeat two Rockets, or Jessie and James.

These trainers shouldn't be difficult - use the same strategies that you've used against these Pokémon before. Jessie and James are slightly tougher than the couple you face in Red and Blue, but not difficult at all. Again, if it is, you will need to train your Pokémon, because there is a much tougher fight coming up... Pick up the Iron in the room to the left, and then enter the room. There you will meet Team Rocket's mastermind, Giovanni. It's time for a harder battle.

You have just defeated the boss of Team Rocket, but this won't be the last we see of him. He runs off, leaving behind the Silph Scope. Pick it up. We're now done here, so take the elevator back up. It's time to go back to the Pokémon Tower, and find out what's wrong with the ghosts there.
