Cinnabar Island
There's a lot to do here. We've got a gym, with its door locked, a burned down lab that we'll get around to in a few moments, and a second lab. Let's go there first. In this place, you can clone Aerodactyl (from Pewter City's Museum's Old Amber) and either Omanyte or Kabuto (from the Helix and Dome Fossils from Mt Moon). One of the guys here will give you TM35. There are also several trades here. In Yellow, Golduck for Rhydon, Growlithe for Dewgong, and Kangaskhan for Muk. In Red and Blue, you can get Raichu for Electrode, Venonat for Tangela and Ponyta for Seel. None of these are really worth it. Enter the mansion now. It's time to catch more Pokemon, and get the key to the gym.
Cinnabar Mansion
Since we don't go through this completely linearily, a list of Pokemon for all the floors, and trainers in the rough order in which you'll meet them.

Not a lot of trainers here, but on the other hand, lots of Pokemon to catch. In Red, get yourself a Ponyta, Grimer and a Koffing. In Blue, the same and also a Magmar. In Yellow, get a Grimer and a Ditto. You'll find a number of books in here talking about a cloned Pokemon that escaped and destroyed this lab. Yes, you'll be able to catch it later. Now, let's get through here. When you enter, go up and right for an Escape Rope, and go to the statue to the left to press a hidden switch. Then go back and up the stairs. Go up the stairs again, and down to get a Max Potion. Go back down and to the right and up for a Calcium. Go left and up the stairs, when you go right now, you'll find an Iron. Go back and hit the switch on the statue (it blocks the Iron), after which you can go down. Beat the scientist, and jump down the left of the two open places, the wider one. You can find Carbos here, and a new set of stairs down to the basement. Enter the seperate room, and hit the switch. TM14 is here as well. Go completely to the left for a Full Restore, and then go back to the right, when you can enter a new hall. Hit the switch in the next room, pick up the Rare Candy, TM22 and the secret key, and get back out (the door on the first floor will be opened now). We're done! Heal, and go to the gym.

Now, the trainers here shouldn't be difficult to defeat with a good water type, or alternatively a ground/rock type. Blaine's levels are higher, but nothing you can't overcome now with a solid team. If you don't want to fight the trainer (they give out good cash and experience!), answer their questions. They aren't difficult, anyway. Too bad a battle with such a cool trainer is over so soon.. ah well. Get TM and badge, heal your Pokemon, stock up on Ultra Balls, and surf east to the Seafoam Islands. It's time to catch our first legendary bird.
