Today on their journey, Ash is locked in battle with a trainer they met on their way to Azalea Town. It's Chikorita Vs Raticate. Ash orders Tackle, but Raticate hits with Hyper Fang. Chikorita is knocked down, but manages to pick herself up again. The other trainer orders a Quick Attack, knocking Chikorita back once again. Ash tries to recall her, but she wants to keep on fighting. She launches a Razor Leaf, hitting the Raticate. Ash orders her to return again, planning on sending Pikachu in, but Chikorita dodges the Pokeball's return beam. He keeps trying, but she keeps getting out of the way. As the day drags on, someone calls the other trainer in for his dinner. He recalls his Raticate and goes inside. Ash scolds Chikorita, telling her that they would have won if she had listened to him. He finally, successfully, recalls her, wondering what made her act up.

That night, at the Pokémon Center, Ash calls Professor Oak, telling him of his victory at the Violet Gym. Oak congratulates him, reminding him not to forget to deliver the G/S Ball. Suddenly Muk appears, pouncing on Oak, looking for it's dinner. He says goodbye and hangs up as Muk continues to smother him. As they feed their Pokémon, Ash notices Chikorita sulking in a corner. He asks her why she isn't eating with the other Pokémon. Pikachu goes over to her, offering her some food, but she bats it away with her leaf. Noticing Chikorita's behaviour, Nurse Joy comes along and asks Ash if Chikorita belongs to him, which he confirms. She reveals that she is an expert in Pokémon Psychology and invites Ash and Chikorita to join her for a counselling session.

Later, during the session, Ash explains the situation. Nurse Joy deduces that Chikorita is suffering from envy. Ash misunderstands, so Misty tells him that Chikorita is jealous. Nurse Joy continues, telling him that Chikorita thought she was about to win a battle for him, but became jealous when he attempted to substitute her for Pikachu. She comes up with an idea. They take Chikorita to a greenhouse filled with plants to calm her down. Nurse Joy asks him to return Chikorita now that she has calmed down, which he does. He asks her if she thinks the therapy will work, which she does. She then suggests he leave Chikorita in the greenhouse overnight.

Later that night, with everyone asleep, Pikachu goes to the greenhouse to check on Chikorita. As he enters, Chikorita's PokéBall starts to move and she lets herself out. Noticing an opening in the wall of the greenhouse, she goes outside, followed by Pikachu. When Pikachu catches up with her and tries to convince her to return to the greenhouse, she launches a Razor Leaf and takes off. Pikachu continues to chase after her, but loses her in some long grass. Coming across an old abandoned building, Chikorita enters and goes to sleep on an old box in the middle of the floor.

Even later that night, Chikorita is awoken and confronted by four Fighting-Type Pokémon; a Machoke, a Hitmonchan, a Hitmonlee and a Primeape. She tries to go back to sleep, but the leader of the Pokémon; Primeape, throws a bolt at Chikorita, angering her. The Primeape launches itself towards Chikorita, but is beaten by her Vine Whip. The other Pokémon, upon seeing this, bow down to Chikorita.

The next morning, after noticing Pikachu and Chikorita missing, Ash & Co. along with Nurse Joy, review the security tapes for the greenhouse. Nurse Joy comments that by running away, Chikorita is looking for attention from Ash. Brock wonders why Pikachu left as well, but Misty points out that he probably went to get Chikorita back. Ash decides to go and look for them, with Nurse Joy telling him to hurry as they are in a rough neighbourhood, with some pretty rough Pokémon around.

Searching for the missing Pokémon, Brock comes up with the idea of using Bulbasaur to sniff out Chikorita as they are both Grass-Types. Also reasoning that if they find Chikorita, Pikachu may not be far behind. Ash sends out Bulbasaur, telling it to sniff for Chikorita's scent. It picks something up and runs off, followed by Ash & Co.

Spying on them, Team Rocket overhear about Pikachu and Chikorita being missing. James uses a walkie-talkie to contact Meowth in their balloon, telling him to be on the lookout for them. Before long, he spots Pikachu running through some tall grass.

Arriving at the abandoned building, Pikachu, finds Chikorita. As he tries to get her to go back with him, Team Rocket appear, reciting their motto. They throw a net at the two Pokémon, but Primeape appears and catches it, saving them. The other Pokémon arrive, and with an order from Chikorita scare Team Rocket enough for them to begin begging for the Pokémon not to hurt them. Upon seeing this, Meowth, in the balloon, activates his new secret weapon and a giant robot made from old tyres crashes out from behind the abandoned building.

As they search for Pikachu and Chikorita, Ash & Co. notice the robot and Team Rocket. They begin to hope that the haven't found Pikachu and Chikorita.

As Meowth winches Jessie and James up out of harms way, Chikorita orders the Fighting Pokémon to attack the robot. Meowth uses the robot, swiftly defeating the Pokémon. Chikorita rushes the robot, but gets knocked out of the way. Pikachu tries an electric attack, but the rubber robot is unaffected. Meowth gloats that he is also too high to be affected, but Jessie and James, hanging below the balloon get a little shocked. Suddenly Ash & Co. arrive as the robot grabs a hold of Pikachu. Chikorita tries using Razor Leaf to save him, but this doesn't work either and she gets grabbed as well. Noticing the antenna on the robot's head, Ash comes up with a plan. He sends out Heracross and orders it to use it's horn to launch him up to it. Misty tells him that it's too dangerous. Ash knows this but is willing to do it to save Pikachu and Chikorita. Heracross launches him, but Meowth moves the robot, causing him to crash into the ground. He gets up, a little dazed, and notices the robot walking away past a water tower. He climbs the tower and jumps off towards the robot. Meowth moves it again, but Chikorita uses her Vine Whip to save him. She manages to lift him up to the robot's head, where he breaks the antenna, sending the robot out of control and causing it to release Pikachu and Chikorita. With Meowth unable to control it, the robot grabs onto the ropes dangling from the balloon with Jessie and James still holding on. To save himself, Meowth uses his claws to cut the ropes, sending Jessie and James crashing into the robot's head. The robot explodes, sending Team Rocket blasting off again. Back on the ground, Ash, Pikachu and Chikorita happily reunite.

That evening, Ash & Co. thank Nurse Joy for all of her help. As they are about to leave, Pikachu jumps up onto Ash's shoulder. Chikorita looks left out, until Ash tells her that the other shoulder if just for her. Happily, she jumps up. They wave goodbye to Nurse Joy as they continue on their Johto Journey.
