The episode begins with the gang riding on Lapras and Ash is admiring his badges. He already had two: Coral Eye and Sea Ruby. Tracy says that he is half way there and only need two more badges to get into the Orange League. Misty warns Ash thay the next gym leaders may be a lot tougher than the last ones. Ash responds by saying that he is a lot tougher trainer than he used to be. Then he notices that they are approaching an island. Tracy reports that it is Morrow Island and they head for it.

From the Pokemon Center they call Prof. Oak who shows them a newspaper. "Treasure found," reads Tracy, "Divers have recoverd what they claim is an Orange League Championship trophy dating back over 300 years, from a sunken ship off the coast of Morrow Island." They are all surprised that the Orange League even existed 300 years ago. Prof. Oak informs them that is at the Morrow Island Art Museum and they decide to visit in the morning.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket are breaking are breaking into that very museum. They plan to steal the trophy and take it to The Boss in the hope of 'a nice juicy bonus.' To get past the lazers Jessie and Meowth attatch James James to a wire and lower him down. James manages to grab it and they all run for it. Not looking where he is going, James trips and falls to the floor. Jessie and Meowth haul him away but he leaves an imprint in the ground.

Next morning, our heroes arrive to find a crowd of people outside the museum, which has been cordened off to the public. Officer Jenny tells them that the Orange League Trophy has been stolen. She shows them the imprint of James and says it's one of their only clues. Ash Misty and Tracy walk down to the sea front, dissapointed. Suddenly Ash trips over a foot sticking out of the hedge. It's James' foot (he and the other Rockets had been sleeping there after a feast) and when Misty questions him and Meowth they accidentally let slip that they stole the trophy. They run for it, down to the sea, while reciting the motto. They get in a Seadra peddle boat and set off, closely followed by the gang on Lapras.

Suddenly, a fog comes down on Team Rocket, and they discover an old ship. They climb aboard and are happy to have found a place to hide out, until it dawns on them that this could be a haunted ship! Nervously they turn around to see a floating sheet behind them and they run, only to fall through a hole in the floor.

The gang arrive at the old ship and stare at it. They spot Team Rocket's abandoned peddle boat and climb onto the ship to look for them. Ash says it must be the ship they raised that had the trophy aboard. Misty has to jump out of the way as mast almost crashes on top of her. She drops Togepi and it falls through a hole in the floor. They all go looking for Togepi, who is wandering around below deck. Team Rocket is trying to get back onto the top deck. Jessie tells James to stop tapping her on the shoulder. He shows her that he has his hands full carrying the trophy and Meowth adds that he can't reach that high. Jessie turns around to see another ghost!

They all run, but the ghost grabs James' sack with the trophy in it. The sack is tied around James neck. Jessie and Meowth grab his foot, but a ghost appears behind them and uses Lick to parylize them - they drop to the floor. The ghosts leave with the trophy. Meanwhile, Ash, Misty and Tracy are still looking for Togepi. Tracy sends out Marrill to find it. Through a door, they discover Togepi, who is safe. Suddenly, two ghosts apear and start circling around Togepi. Misty sends out Staryu who pulls the sheets off them to reveal...a Gastly and a Haunter! It seems that Gastly and Haunter were just playing with Togepi.

Ash and co. see the trophy but Gastly and Haunter bar their way. Team Rocket arrive on the scene and James sends out Victreebel, who tries to eat Meowth (not James this time!). Jessie sends out Arbok, and Victreebel finally uses a Razor leaf, but it does not work on ghosts. Nor does Arbok's tackle. Gastly uses Night Shade on Arbok and Haunter uses Confusion, which makes it attack Team Rocket. Haunter controls Meowth so it can talk to Ash and co. The ghost explain that their master was the old ship's captain, who loved Pokemon. Their ship sank in a storm, but 300 years later some divers came and took the trophy which their master had won at the Orange League. They raised the ship and went in search of the trophy. Then the ghosts show the captain battling with Gastly against a Beedrill at the Orange League.

The ghosts explain that they can never allow anyone to take the trophy. Ash send Pikachu to Thundershock Team Rocket and Haunter levitates them through the roof, before they blast off. The ghosts then levitate the ship into the air and it slowly flies off into the night. Ash says he'll have to win an Orange League Trophy for himself, just like the captain did. The three friends watch as the ship flies off towards the moon.
