Another year has come and gone, and for PKMN.NET, it has been a strange but wonderful year.

This news item is more than 45 days old. Updates are unlikely and newer information may already be available.

The end of the year is a time for both looking ahead and looking back, and for us, this is no different. As a site that does not shun the topical and politics, we could mention all of that here, but since most of you people won't recognise Bokito, my contribution to that isn't as large.

One thing that has stood out in the mind of all who attended - which includes most of the admins and other staff, so we consider it vital - is the first official, large PKMN.NET meet. With an attendance of over 20 people - far more than we expected - it was a larger success than any of us expected, and the entire day, while not entirely flawless, went fantasitic and was enjoyed by everyone. We couldn't have hoped for anything more.

A more visible change for everyone was our launch of our complete rewrite of the site's code - a project known to the admins as v9. While originally seen as little more than a new look to the site that was far too professional according to some sceptics, we hope that it has been seen by everyone as an improvement in what we can do with the site.
In case anyone was curious - yes, the improvements this gave us for developing features was noticeable and our recent load of features was in part caused by this.

Last December had another noteworthy event, even if its ending wasn't appreciated by everyone. In an epic battle, 40-something members starred in a large contest in which the new Name Rater would be chosen. Unfortunately, our grouchy staff member turned out to be his angry self again, and ended it before we ever managed to find one.

Around the same type, we've been releasing a lot of other functionality. In fact, this year, more PHP code has been written for the site than in any previous year. Aside from the v9 release, these were rereleases of things like the name rater, Ask Sentret, and the Caption Contest, but even more eye-catching are the new features such as the somewhat popular cards, the expanded squads feature, and most notably, the huge Pokedex that is, already, a large resource with a lot of game-related information. Not just Pokemon information, but many other parts of the Pokemon game have expanded information. And it's a feature that has been 3 years in the making, coming from an idea that we want to store some more information about different locations.
All of this has taken us a lot of work, but all of us feel it has paid off.

(By the way, we are still looking for rule 20. I understand that a lot of clues have been left, where not all of them have been found. We hope to find them in the next week or so)

To look ahead, PKMN.NET will continue on as strong as it always has in 2008. Since we couldn't fit all our feature release in the last month, we have brought a number of them into January, which will make the site even more useful.
We won't sit still now that we've introduced this system, however. As always, we are still filled with a lot of ideas that we want to introduce to the site, with other things that don't work as well as we like them to, and that we will probably expand or just rewrite again. We've had our first taste now.

Not just that, after last year's success with the meet, a second one is already being considered, announcements of which will follow at appropriate times. Surely that has to be even better?

And of course, we won't stop the usual things. We still have a strong community on our forums and IRC chat, which you should join in with if you haven't. They don't bite, and if they do you can always bite back. I hear some of them are made of chocolate, so it'll even taste good. We'll keep updating our content and post all the news we find. Most important of all, we will continue to bring you quality information with the interactivity we pride ourselves on and that sense of humour and fun that we feel is so important to bring to our lives. A day without laughter is a day in which you haven't been alive.

And if you think there is something we should add to the site, that we should consider, or where we might consider change, feel free to suggest it to us. We're always open for that (although we can't promise we'll do everything, and we have this slight tendency to do things in the future. Don't worry - we have a bug tracking system, so they won't get lost.). But we're open to these things, and will try to be even more so in the future.

Last, to move away from our limited focus on this site alone, and look to the site as a whole, we would like to bring into remembrance the many people that unfortunately passed away during the past year. Not just those we all know of, but more importantly, those that touched us more personally. At the same time, we celebrate all the children that joined us during the past year.

From the entire PKMN.NET staff, Happy new year, everyone, and may 2008 be at least as good, if not a better year for everyone.
