Kurma
In Indian legends, a turtle called Kurma is sometimes shown carrying the world on it's back. I thought that this would be a good name for Torterra because of the tree in it's back and it's pokedex entry that stated that people thought that a huge Torterra lived beneath the ground.

Atlas
As the continent Pokemon, Torterra carries a shell that other Pokemon have been known to spend their entire lives living upon, much like how we live our entire lives on the Earth. Since Atlas carried the Earth in Greek myth, this Torterra's name is Atlas.

In Greek myth, Atlas was a titan who supported the world upon his back (like the stuff on his shell is a miniature world? eh). Atlas is also a set of mountain ranges.. not to mention maps. The whole Atlas titan thing could also explain his size.

RootRictor
Torterra is a Grass/Ground type, right? Well, a root is the part of the plant that generally grows in the ground, and a richter scale is used to measure seismic energy in earthquakes. But, since there was a 10 letter limit and I didn't know how to spell Richter at the time (I'm a moron, an idiot, loser of the spelling bee. Beat you to it!), it ended up as RootRictor.
