Games General / Nationals announced!
« on: February 02, 2015, 16:03 »
Pokémon trainers! It's that time of year =D

Video game and TCG Nationals for the UK have been finalised. The dates are Sat 30th - Sun 31st May, and it's at Event City in Manchester. It's also looking to be bigger than ever, given that last year we had almost a thousand video game players alone!

I'm also super excited to be the Head Judge for the VG this year ^_^ and it'd be wonderful to see as many of you there as possible!

Even if you've never attended an event before, I totally recommend that you come along - it's a fun day out, even if you're just taking part for the fun of it! All you need is a 3DS, a copy of ORAS and your team of six fighters.

Is anyone thinking of coming? =]

Reveal video

So, Primal Kyogre and Groudon's abilities have been revealed: they cause extreme rain and sunlight. These cause other weather-inducing moves, such as Hail, to fail, and also Fire and Water moves respectively are nullified. You cannot use Water moves against Primal Groudon when its ability is in effect. Suddenly might we see a shift in the balance of power between these two?

Also contains game footage of the new Megas (Camerupt, Sharpedo and Gallade) and, er, Rayquaza sitting around doing totally normal things. Might we see Primal Rayquaza, or at least a boost in power to Air Lock?

Edit: Forgot Primordial Sea's English name, thanks~

Trades / I want foreign dex entries!
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:29 »
Hey guys!

So, my boyfriend and I are doing a slightly crazy project - completing the Pokédex in every language. It's an ongoing, fun little thing and, while we could just play through the games seven times, we wanted to make a bit of a trading adventure out of it. Most of our progress has been made through Wonder Trading.

You can see our current progress in this spreadsheet; the white boxes are the things we need (so, for example, at the time of writing the whole Zigzagoon row is light blue except for the KOR column - that means Korean is the only language we're missing for Zigzagoon). Rainbow rows are ones for which we have AAAALL the languages. The purple and dark blue boxes are just for our own reference for which ones we need to trade to each other.

So if you have any spare foreign mons lying around that you wouldn't mind parting with, I'd love to trade with you for them! A few notes:

- There's kinda no point trading us stuff that is already evolved, since we'll need to get the Basic level anyway. The exceptions to this are stuff like Vespiquen, Shedinja and things with split evo lines like Poliwhirl and Eevee, which are still helpful to us.

- I'm happy to do touch-trades for Legendaries! You can trust me, many people here can vouch for my unsuspiciousness :3 It would be lovely if you'd be willing to let me trade them to my boyfriend before giving them back, too.

- I can offer lots of bits and bobs in return - in particular, I can trade you pretty much any Vivillon you like, though you may have to wait a little while if it isn't one I have a lot of spares of! I have boxes and boxes of Jungle, Garden and Monsoon, currently, and a handful of some of the others. I'm happy to touch-trade you absolutely any of them if the dex data is all you care about.

- Otherwise, I have loads of random breeding stuff lying around, plus fully-evolved foreign stuff I'm happy to part with and various other things for the dex etc.. basically just let me know what you want for your stuff and we can negotiate~

Please let me know if you can help us out! ^_^ Especially if you have Korean things - they are the tastiest <3

Random Randomness / Pokémon for Water Aid!
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:13 »
Hi everyone!

My friends and I are doing a several-day Pokémon marathon to raise money for Water Aid and if you could drop us a little donation or just pop in and say hi that'd be amazing!

Link~

Donating means you get to choose what Pokémon we use or can enter you into a raffle to win a lovely watercolour of one of the Kanto starters.

So yeah, come pop in and watch us play Red at silly o'clock in the morning!

TV and Movies / Trance
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:04 »
Just saw this last night and it's such a good film. There were a couple of bloody bits I had to look away from for a moment, but otherwise it was ace. Really, really liked how the characters played out and how we found out a little bit more about the backstory each time Simon goes under, but you don't know what's truly going on until the end. And Elizabeth is ace.

It definitely also has its slightly bizarre bits - the whole thing about naked women in paintings - but you kinda expect that.

So has anyone else seen it? =] did you like it?

Games General / VGC / TCG Euro Nationals 2013
« on: March 26, 2013, 21:38 »
It's coming up to that time of year again: European National Video Game Championship Season!

This year things are a little different. In previous years, there were 5 countries held VGC nationals; it was single-elimination; and it was nothing to do with the TCG.

This year, France and Spain do not have Nationals tournaments.. why? Who knows. The format, excitingly, will be Swiss, which means everyone gets to play a few matches no matter how bad you are (which I'm pretty chuffed about!), with single elimination top cut. And they're making a weekend of Nationals, with TCG on the Saturday and VGC on the Sunday.

Dates:

--- ITALY
- Mediolanum Forum, Milan
May 11-12th TCG & VGC

--- GERMANY
- RuhrCongress Bochum, Bochum
May 25th TCG
May 26th VGC

--- UK
- National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham
June 1st TCG
June 2nd VGC

Interesting to note that the UK is, for once, last in the season. We're normally first, which is part of why we normally get steamrollered by amazing Euro players (the other part of the reason being that they're simply amazing), but we might stand more of a chance now! That said, no Spanish VGC means Spain will have to win somewhere else, which they doubtless will..

Also exciting to note is that Top 4 in every division ALL get paid trips to Vancouver for Worlds in August, and in Juniors and Seniors it's Top 8! That's pretty exciting stuff!!

So who's coming?! Enigma, Kyriakou, Thelastsheikah and myself will be there as usual and a bunch of our friends are coming too, would be ace if any of you joined us!

Hope to see you there!! ^___^

Updates / APPEAL: Haiti
« on: January 15, 2010, 23:30 »

In case you've been living under a rock for the past week, I've got a story to tell you.

What happened?
On Tuesday 12th January, a tiny little Caribbean country called Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake.

Haiti is already one of the poorest countries in the world; to have its capital city, Port au Prince, at the epicentre of the earthquake, was the stuff of nightmares. The buildings are - were - simple concrete structures, with none of the damping and stabilising features of the buildings of richer countries. And this wasn't just a single earthquake - if the initial magnitude 7 quake wasn't bad enough, more than 10 aftershocks of magnitude 5 or above followed.

This city of a million people is gutted. It is estimated that up to 50,000 people have died. Heaps of rubble lie everywhere, with countless people trapped underneath. Rescue teams are racing against time to find the survivors among the bodies, but time is running out and the death count rises every day. Communications are down, so people have no way of knowing if their families have survived.

And the outlook isn't good for the survivors, either. Food, medicine and water supplies are almost exhausted, and there is nowhere to shelter - refugees are having to camp in the street under blankets, many sporting serious injuries. They may have survived the earthquake but, without aid, disease will rapidly spread among them. Others may starve.

What can I do?
There are people working night and day to relieve the situation, to help these poor people. Rescue teams are still searching for survivors; medics are seeing to injuries one by one; volunteers are distributing the scant food supplies and blankets to the needy.

But they need our help.

By donating to any one of these charities - Oxfam, DEC, Red Cross, Christian Aid, and countless others - you can help. You can even donate over the counter at a bank or post office. Any amount will do; just £10 will provide a family with much-needed healthcare. Still got some Christmas money kicking around? You could buy the Joe McElderry CD.. or you could save a life. Admit it, saving a life is a pretty nifty thing to do with your spare cash.

Please, please give anything you can.

(Now! Go on, do it!)

But Kay, what's in it for me?

You get a warm fuzzy feeling; shame on you for asking!

Just kidding ;) as we did with the tsunami appeal a few years back, we will be rewarding donators with a little something for your profile: your Pokéballs will be magically turned into Safari Balls. Just send us some sort of confirmation that you've donated (a screenshot or something of a confirmation that your payment has been received, maybe forward the confirmation email, with all personal information blanked out of course) and your username before the end of January to seniorstaff@pkmn.net. We will delete all emails immediately after altering your profile, for security reasons.

You also get golden e-brownies, fresh out of the virtual oven. They smell delicious.

So go get giving! Do something that really matters today.

Yes, her.

Please welcome Firestorm as your new Media moderator ^__^ Many of you may know her as Lottie. She's been a member for God knows how long, was at the head of the History project, and has been involved in so much site drama acting as a mediator that she's practically staff anyway ;]

She's a wonderful, friendly person and you must all go love her. Now.

Team Building / The Teambuilding Sticky - Read it!
« on: December 05, 2008, 20:44 »
Welcome!
Here in Team Building you can give and receive ratings on Pokémon teams, further your battling prowess while helping others to do the same. There’s something for battlers of every level of experience; this is a community in which we help each other to succeed, whether your goal is to beat the Elite 4 or to become the best competitive battler on the internet. For the beginners, you can post a team and get help from our team builders. The more experienced of you may want to leave your own thoughts and suggestions on the teams of other people, and for those of you who really know your stuff, we generate a lot of debating in this board over tier placements and whatnot.

Read the first three posts of the topic before posting in this board. The second post is all about posting a team; the third post contains guidelines for rating other people's teams.

Quick Links:[Dex] [Site Section] [Standard Movesets] [Coverall Combos] [Natures] [EVs] [Archetypes] [Benchmark Speed Stats]

Tiers: [Ubers] [Overused] [Borderline] [Underused] [Neverused]

Calculators: [Metalkid’s IV Calculator] [Metalkid's Damage Calculator] [libelldra Forge's Damage Calculator] [Steinhauser's Offline Damage Calculator]

Confused about the different damage calculators? TCoZ has kindly written a brief guide to the differences between them:
Metalkid's damage calculator is by far the easiest to use, and requires no knowledge of base stats or similar to use, however the way the damage calculation is done makes it slightly incorrect, and certain abilities or moves aren't worked out properly (such as Technician). If you're only worried about a rough estimate, then use it, but if it says you'll OHKO or similar don't assume that it will.

libelldra Forge's damage calculator is the most complicated one to use, requiring information on the exact stat, not just the base stat and EVs/nature, which can be very annoying if you make a slight change like nature or base stat. However, if you have this information, it is the fastest to use, and shows information on OHKOs/2HKOs  in different situations (leftovers/stealth rocks). I do believe that there are slight errors at lower levels, but they are very minute and won't make a difference (unless you're interested in Little Cup).

Steinhauser's offline damage calculator is almost like a mix of both. It maintains the accuracy of libelldra Forge's damage calculator, while being easier to use. It also has the unique feature of allowing you to save the attacker's and the defender's information to use later. Provided you know the base stats, typing matchups and base power of the move, it is simple to use. This information can easily be found on PKMN.net's Dex. The only real problem is the fact you have to download it, and there is a chance that it might not work on your computer. However, if you are willing to download it and it works, it is easily the most useful of the three."
