PKMN.NET / Regularly Recurring Content Thread and Hub Post
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:45 »
So here is a thread where i'll be pitching ideas for the articles I suggested in the other thread.  This is purely for those types of things.  This is also a hub post for content which already exist.

6th Generation Pokemon of the Week by Richard and Blaziken.
Latest update:  August 31st, 2014
Updates:  Every Sunday
Subject:  Tyranitar
Hub post
This article series, updated weekly, talks about the competitive merits of various Pokemon in the sixth generation.  It is a very good issue, updated weekly.

Latest update: August 31st, 2014
Updates: Weekly, Sunday at 8pm.
Hub post
A weekly stream in which we play Pokemon Black together, have a laugh and a chat together for an hour. Enjoy the richness of Unova.

Metagame Sprites by PKMN.NET's spriters
Updates: as often as people contribute with sprites
Hub post

Video Game OST Discussion by Lord Raven
Updates:  Once a week on Fridays
Link
A project of mine where I discuss a video game OST each week.

Unsuspected, "unviable" Niche Pokémon of the Day, by Delicious_Scout.
Latest Update: August 31st
Updates:  Analyzes Pokemon on Weekdays and analyzes members on saturdays
Link and Hub Post.
From Monday to Friday, a Pokémon that, at maximum, appears in the D rank of Smogon's Viabily Ranking, is analysed, so that it can be used with extensive support in the OU metagame. Some Pokémon might be used in Übers as well, as proven in the first issue. In Saturdays, I will "analyse" a member of the community, and, in Sunday, I will read Richard's article and watch Lewis' stream, so nothing will be updated during that day.

PKMN.net bi-weekly prize tournament by Richard and Blaziken
Latest Update: September 5th, 2014
Updates: Every two weeks
link
A bi-weekly tournament with different rules for each tournament that gives out a competitive Pokemon as a prize.

I was also thinking of collaborating with someone to bring Video Game Reviews back, but instead of outright reviews I'd make it into "Video Game spotlight."  My think with collaboration is that I could update it once every two or three weeks, someone else would update it in that gap, and if I get a third person then someone else could update it in that gap.  It would give us three weeks to come up with something concise and informative; nothing like those 20K character posts I used to make, with no visuals or anything.  Because nobody wants to read something.

Video Game music weekly is something I'd be interested in doing alone or with someone; Video game music is almost as important as the game itself, and it would be really cool to bring some stuff out there.

Lottie said she has dibs on "Pokemon route of the fortnight" but it would be cool for someone else to work with her to get more updates more often.  So long as there's communication, having a collaboration is a really good thing.

If anyone else has any - and I mean ANY - other ideas or can tell me about any other things going on, let me know.  I'll update this regularly as the threads or articles themselves update.  It should be very easy if I'm either given a heads up or if there's a very regular interval in which it occurs.

PKMN.NET / Idea to boost activity
« on: August 24, 2014, 00:14 »
So I'm not going to make post #1000001 about how activity on the forum is low.  Instead I'm going to suggest something; weekly or biweekly columns on something random.  Not on pkmn.net, but just something where someone or a group of people continuously update a thread with talking points.

For instance, Richard has the Pokemon of the Week thing.  I did the Video Game Review weekly thing, which I did not feel was very well received despite praise; no one wanted to read through 20K characters of just me rambling about a game, with no pictures or anything.

I was thinking things like, football legends of the week in Sports (american football and/or soccer), football teams every two weeks, a video game music series, or a series where someone talks about a game or we have a weekly video game "book club" type thing.  Hell, for Pokemon stuff, we could do "Pokemon Routes of the day" or "Gym Leader of the fortnight" or something random like that.

Any thoughts?  I don't want to hear things like "I like those ideas", I want to hear more specific ideas, more refinement in these ideas, hammering out some specifics, etc.  It's hard to get content on this site when other places get them faster, so I figure we should take it the other way and try to make it more community based.  We did pride ourselves on being quirky once upon a time and this is a rather quirky thing to do I think.

Let me say one thing though; we can post these reviews and all of that all we want, but it doesn't make a difference if no one shows interest.  The point is to stimulate discussion; I didn't like in my review thread how people just went "wow nice review, this game looks cool."  I wanted people to ask questions about them, talk about certain themes in more detail, etc.  Make comparisons maybe?  I have no idea.  I could bring it back, and instead of making it a review format, putting a lot more visuals to it and putting on paragraph-long descriptions of things.  I know everyone didn't like sifting through two whole posts about a video game they may not have played or won't plan on playing.

I want some substance on here, and while you may be doing something interesting or you may be sad on something that'll make you want to vent in certain Random Randomness threads, I don't feel there's much substance to it.  If that's what you like, then by all means.  I'm also not saying that we take these things seriously, although I probably will to some extent because my idea of humor isn't silly so much as bitterly sarcastic, but I want a good mix of things.  "Pokemon route of the fortnight" has plenty of room for silliness, "video game review of the fortnight" has less room for silliness but it's definitely a common bond we all share in terms of video games.  Video Game book club is cool too because we can talk about games we've mutually played and maybe get someone else interested in it.  Who knows?

Hiya everyone,

Just my annual plug for the IRC - in other words, internet relay chat.  Where you can chat to members on the forum!  Here's a quick link and this thread has a few more instructions if you're feeling adventurous..

A few things;

Don't disconnect/reconnect spam.  Once you have the window open, keep the window open; use a different tab for browsing.
Follow the rules.

STAY IN CHAT EVEN IF ITS EMPTY!  WITHIN AN HOUR SOMEONE ELSE WILL JOIN AND YALL CAN TALK!  IF RAVEN IS ONLINE ALERT ME (BY SAYING RAVEN) AND HOPEFULLY I WILL COME ON!  If I don't I'm AFK.  BUT for activity, you must be patient and willing to wait for someone else to come in, otherwise no chat will ever happen.

And I ESPECIALLY recommend coming in if you're new which is why I posted it here!  Then you can get to know me, know the history of the forum, and talk to some of the older people who may lurk around there.  I'll try my best to pitch it to people who are on skype but never IRC though, but a lot of us are getting old and busy - this is why you new people have to start filling the void!  You are the future!

Thank you in advance,

Raven

Where has the time gone?  I want to use this thread as a nostalgia thread of sorts, with some emphasis on my awesome legacy here, but with much emphasis on how most of us here have grown and what we're doing with our lives.  It's almost an annual thread now, but it's one I hope you gys are looking forward to every year.

I'll make a bigger post later, because I have to print something out THEN do a mock presentation (I'm presenting some research I just did in Denver next week!) but I want to get the ball rolling with this thread.

Love yall,

Raven

PKMN.NET / IRC and new people
« on: January 05, 2014, 18:35 »
Hi everyone,

So we've been getting a lot of new people recently.  I highly recommend you guys come to IRC.  I know it's empty most of the time, but if you see me (Raven) in there then just say my name (Raven) and I'll respond almost immediately.  When I'm on I'm at my computer and if you say my name you'll alert me.  If there's no one there, just stay for a while and someone will come in and talk.

The link to IRC is here, and some extra tips are here.  The IRC is how a bunch of us got close way back in the day, and I firmly believe that if you get online and talk for a while, we can make it into something big again, and maybe in the process make this great website incredibly active again!

Thank you,
- Raven

Hiya everyone,

So to spark activity on this board I love so much and call home, I will be doing weekly game reviews and discussions for games that I wish to talk about and pique my interest.  Hopefully this will provide some insight into some games, will give people recommendations and will encourage discussions about the nuances of one of everyone's favorite hobbies in life - gaming.

I will write my first article tomorrow.  Hopefully I can get an archive sort of thing going with my OP, and hopefully the discussion will be constructive as well.  I also want some constructive criticism in my writing too - I don't want to be a professional reviewer or anything but if there is some thing about anything in my posts that can rub you the wrong way then please point it out.  It encourages discussion in that sense too!

One warning in advance:  either keep spoilers to a minimum or mark them.  I believe the best way to deal with spoilers is to put spoilers in big bold font then put everything else in a subscript with yellow font.  Err on the side of caution with them.

Example:
SPOILER:
aeris dies

PKMN.NET / Real quick announcement about IRC
« on: July 17, 2013, 03:00 »
This isn't official or anything so don't take it as that

Basically, we all know IRC is inactive etc.  Stay around for maybe 20 minutes and judge instead of instantly.  Because then more people come in, think its inactive, then leave instantly as a result.

One more thing:  feel free to alert me if I'm on.  If I'm AFK then I won't respond for a few minutes.  If not, then I will respond within seconds.

Hopefully this can solve the minor issue of inactive IRC.  One step at a time people!

Gaming / Best Cult Classic Games
« on: May 08, 2013, 05:41 »
I think most of you gamers know what a Cult Classic is but for all of you fledglings I will explain what a Cult Classic is.

A Cult Classic is a game that was not heavily advertised and is relatively unknown, but has a small and dedicated following and is otherwise a quality game.

So let us speak about such games.  My favorite of the bunch are the Shadow Hearts series and the Drakengard series.

PKMN.NET / So the forums have had less activity
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:26 »
Right, so I'm not here to complain about anything since forums having less activity is something natural.  I just wanted to start a thread so we can bring this to light and we can suggest ways to make this forum have more activity.

For example, like in the debates forum, we could have something to the extent of current events and have a discussion about that over the week.  Probably a daily show sort of thing as well, where someone just makes fun of or picks up on inconsistencies in politics.  Maybe a game review of the day/week thing, where people review a game and discuss it.

A problem that I have myself is that there either aren't interesting enough threads, and when I try to make one that interests me it gets no responses.  People seem to love these "what are you doing right now" threads, which is fine because they're simple but we used to have some pretty good discussions outside of the Pokemon forum.  Just some of my own thoughts; I can suggest everything in the last paragraph to boost activity but not many people will be interested in having a discussion on it.  I haven't talked to many of you guys in a month either, and I want to fix that :/

Team Building / Great IVs you've gotten recently
« on: March 11, 2010, 04:55 »
RNG things do count but are highly discouraged cause RNG abusing doesn't make you cool.  well maybe it does, but it's probably not as cool as

anyways, i just decided to make use of my member pass and after about a month of slaving over a darkrai with resets (only like 6-7 days of that month were days i used for darkrai, with only an hour of those days being used) I finally got something promising:

Darkrai - #491 (Timid): 2 - 3 / 14 - 15 / 28 - 29 / 28 - 29 / 18 - 19 / 31

hgss here i come!

PS -- i feel more proud of this after about a month of manual labor than actually thinking this is amazing.  if you want amazing go see what dan RNGs.

Say Hello! / Rules and tips in a nutshell!
« on: November 14, 2008, 20:30 »
I don't need any introduction, just post more and get to know me!  I'll start with the most important thing; if you want the full set of rules, click here!  I'll be condensing it for you so you can be wary of some of the more commonly broken rules.  Trust me, they're really easy to follow.

Three Word Minimum - Anything below 3 words is forbidding, but 3 words is allowed.
No Spamming - Should be self-explanatory, make your posts relevant and try to avoid redundancy!
Avatars/Signatures - Avatar/Signature total is at most 150 kB, so you can have a 100 kB avatar and a 50 kB signature.  That's 153,600 bytes btw!  Avatars are 100x100 pixels.
Reporting posts/"Mini-modding" - Don't try to enforce rules, it's spam and you can't do anything about it!  Use the "report to moderator" button.  Don't abuse the button either.
Double Posting - Self-explanatory, basically you can't post more than one time in a row.  There are exceptions; if your first post is more than 10,000 characters then go ahead and make a second post.
Some Exceptions to the above - There are instances where it will be allowed, read this post for more details.  In a nutshell, if you want to update your art/writing thread, then you can post again.  So long as there was more than a couple days between updates, and you aren't posting more than 2-3 times in a row.  It's just a matter of common sense!
Swearing - Obviously, do not swear.  "hell" "damn" "piss" "crap" is allowed.  Use your common sense!  If it's censored on American television then it is not allowed (b (five letters) and b (seven letters) also aren't allowed).
Respect - Everyone deserves it!  Treat others the way you want to be treated!
Flaming - Don't try to pick a fight with someone!  You can debate, but if someone does something to piss you off report them to a moderator!
Flood Control - Not a rule, but you have to wait 30 seconds between each post!  If you try to post 29 seconds before another post, then you have to wait another 30 seconds!  Watch out!
Added note - If you made a post, and it told you to wait 30 seconds, then you hit "Back", then make sure you refresh the page before you try to post again!  It also helps to copy your content out of the box.

The IRC

Link:  http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewpage&id=3601&parentsection=36

It's a chatroom for people to hang out in!  If there's no activity, try to make some!

This runs on Java btw, so make sure your computer can use that.  If you don't want to use Java, then use something like mIRC!  Our server is irc.synirc.org and our channel is #pkmn.net.  If you are not IRC-inclined, then follow these directions after configuring your name and stuff:

Code: [Select]
/server irc.synirc.orgAnd once you're connected,
Code: [Select]
/join #pkmn.net
From there, most people should be able to help you with anything regarding the IRC.  We don't bite!

General Help

Link:  http://pkmn.net/forums/index.php?action=help

So the forums run on SMF if you can't already tell...  the above should be able to help you with forum specifics if you need any help!

Hotlinks and Images

This is asked quite often, and I'll provide the answer here!

Posting an image is really not that tough; the image must be uploaded to the internet however, in one way or another.  If it's on your computer, then upload it to a place like Photobucket or Tinypic.  If it's already uploaded, great!

Once uploaded, take its URL (Right Click -> Properties -> it's right next to location; copy it) and put it between the following tags

Code: [Select]
[img][/img]
So, for example if I wished to post this Ike avatar I have on my computer, I post it like this;

Code: [Select]

So it ends up being;

Hotlinking is equally simple.  Just use the following "formula;"

Code: [Select]
The text you wish to have
So if I wanted to link to the rules;

Code: [Select]
Read the rules!
It ends up being like this:  Read the rules!

Now, if you wish to hotlink an image, you put the image between the url brackets.  So it's like this

Code: [Select]

Result:

It's that easy!

Post Count

Post count doesn't matter that much; trust me, I'm the #1 poster on this board (Tim doesn't count because he didn't actually make all those posts!)  Every forum but Forum Games increase your post count...  Just make sure each of your posts follows the rules!

You do get new ranks above your Pokeballs for having x number of posts, and those are as follows;
15000 - Fan Rotom
10000 - Fan Fan
5000 - Name Rater Hater
2500 - Sentret Fan
1000 - Joeno Fan
500 - Typhlosion Fan
250 - Mulholland Fan
100 - Rex Fan
50 - Rob Fan
25 - Psythor Fan
1 - Iceduck Fan
0 - Pokémon Fan

So once you hit that many posts, your rank changes to that particular thing!  It's just aesthetics is all, and it's fairly cool I suppose!

That's pretty much all I can think of; enjoy your PKMN.NET career and have fun!  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the PKMN.NET general board board!

Also, if you're new, check out this thread.  Make your own thread obviously for people to welcome you but also participate in some ice breakers as well!  We're a welcoming community with an open mind to a lot of things.
