Bonobos [Chimps, Pygmy] and Dolphins are, like humans, can have sex for pleasure rather than procreation.

Also, the female in the Bonobos calls the shot when it comes to sex, even though the male are stronger. Yeah, I'm pretty much in THAT perverted mood that I decide to read facts.

Some wasps lay their eggs in catpillars.
The larvae develop teeth to get out the caterpillars skin when they are too big for the host.
they go and cocoon themselves, the caterpillars still alive though.
then suddenly the Caterpillar is like 'i will protect these wasps' and is messed up
then it makes a protective layer over them too. The Caterpillar turns very aggressive and tries to protect the wasps until it dies of starvation.

Horses cannot breathe through their mouth. If their nostrils become obstructed, they could suffocate.

It is bad luck to whistle in a theatre. The superstition dates back to the time when off-duty sailors would run the fly system in theatres, and the sailors would whistle the cues to each other. Therefore, if you were to walk through a theatre carelessly whistling a tune, you might cause a scenic piece to fall on your head.

Mascara was invented by a chemist for his sister, Mabel, because she wanted to look more appealing to this man of hers, or something along those lines, I don't know, I wasn't there.
He made a mix of coal dust and vaseline, and somehow that turned into mascara and presumably didn't just make her eyes stick closed.
Became pretty popular, and he made a cosmetics company around that, naming it Mabelline.
mabel + vaseline, har.

Which to me just for some reason sounds like it shouldn't be true. Which is unfortunate as it appears to be the only thing that I remember from my "chemistry in real-world applications like paint and cosmetics!" module, on which I am to be tested tomorrow.

cats have an odd amount of whiskers.

Hot water freezes faster than cold water.

Water has the only solid form that floats in it's liquid form. If ice sank the planet would not be able to sustain life.

There is a type of jellyfish that, apon reaching adulthood, can reform it's cells back into childhood, it can repeat this as many times as it pleases, thus enabling it to live forever.

There is an all female species of lizard that does not need a male to produce eggs, in effect this process would be the same as cloning, as the lizards born would be -exactly- the same as the mother.

Polar bears have the most sensitive smell of all species, even greater than that of sniffer dogs.

most types of fish can live in a tank of human blood.

Degrees in Celsius is determined by the freezing and boiling points of water, Fahrenheit is measured by the same system but for human blood.

The most poisonous animal is the box jellyfish.  It has caused at least 5,567 recorded deaths since 1954. Their venom is among the most deadly in the world. It’s toxins attack the heart, nervous system, and skin cells. And the worst part of it is that jelly box venom is so overpoweringly painful, that human victims go in shock, drown or die of heart failure before even reaching shore. This is so that it will instantly stun or kill prey, so the prey unable to struggle and damage it's delicate tenticals.
Title: Re: General Random Facts Topic
Post by: ShiraBliss on December 08, 2010, 11:04
^ Cnidocytes and nematocysts. The venom is so deadly because the cnidocytes and nematocysts that box jellyfish use makes your cells explode.

Nematocysts are loaded with calcium ions, which when injected into the cnidocytes of the jellyfish - or the spear-like cells which act as needles to inject the poison into the prey - causes osmotic pressure inside the cnidocyte, which propells the poison into the victim at a tremendously high velocity. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I think it's something like 4000 or 40000 g's of force in a microsecond.

Ouch, right?

Exploding cells is one of the most traumatizing and deadly injuries you can get, not only because any toxins that your cells were carrying prior to the explosion get re-released into the body, but the body automatically goes into shock with high concentrations.

The only 'normal' way your cells explode is when macrophagocytes - after presenting the foreign substance to your T-Cells (the cells that are responsible for activating the phagocytes and telling them what to do with a foreign virus/bacterium/disease) - are ordered to engulf the substance in question and poison it with radioactive oxygen.

Hitler had one testicle.

Which I beleive, the other one was shot off in WWI

Quote
It has been alleged that Hitler had monorchism, the medical condition of having only one testicle. Hitler's personal doctor, Johan Jambor, supposedly described the dictator's condition to a priest who later wrote down what he had been told in a document which was uncovered in 2008, 23 years after the doctor's death.

Soviet doctor Lev Bezymensky, allegedly involved in the Soviet autopsy, stated in a 1967 book that Hitler's left testicle was missing. Bezymensky later admitted that the claim was falsified. Hitler was routinely examined by many doctors throughout his childhood, military service and later political career, and no clinical mention of any such condition has ever been discovered. Records do show he was wounded in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, and some sources do describe his injury as a wound to the groin.

Wikipedia you've done it again!

An ion is an atom with up to three more or less electrons than the normal. The number of electrons it gains or loses is determined by how many electrons it needs to gain or lose to have a full outer shell.
While, in theory, it is possible to add or take more than three electrons, it doesn't tend to go well.

The number of electrons a non-ionic atom has is the same as the proton number.

To find the neutron number of an atom, you deduct the proton number from the atomic mass number.

DNA is located inside the nucleus of a cell.

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid.

DNA is a double helix, while RNA is a single helix.

RNA stands for ribonucleic acid.

The laws of physics change depending on where you are in the universe. However the amount of change is incredibly slight over massive distances.

The laws of physics are stupid. You drop something and gravity pulls it down to the ground. What's up with that? (no pun intended)

All mass has a gravitational pull to some extent.

Chocolate has caffeine in it.

there seems to be this sort of circle of natural stuff with alkaloid xanthines in it it's weird
the cocoa bean
tea
coffee
yerba mate
guarana

they all have differing levels of theophylline, theobromine and caffeine

and like differing levels of each seem to have completely different effects
like yerba mate is coffee buzz but w/o coffee jitters and is mostly caffeine and theobromine
chocolate just makes you feel ~nice~ and its mostly theobromine
tea chills you out and its mostly caffiene and the amino acid theanine (which is cheating a little)
coffee hypes you up like you've just done a line cos its mostly caffeine

science eh

Lol noooooooo! i disagree. MATHS stands for:

Nah not really its a very old joke =P.
Ok i like animals so don't expect any better from me.

Golden eagles use their speed and sharp talons to snatch up rabbits, marmots, and ground squirrels. They also eat carrion, reptiles, birds, fish, and smaller fare such as large insects. They have even been known to attack full grown deer. Ranchers once killed many of these birds for fear that they would prey on their livestock, but studies showed that the animal's impact was minimal. Today, golden eagles are protected by law.

Golden eagle pairs maintain territories that may be as large as 60 square miles (155 square kilometers). They are monogamous and may remain with their mate for several years or possibly for life. Golden eagles nest in high places including cliffs, trees, or human structures such as telephone poles. They build huge nests to which they may return for several breeding years. Females lay from one to four eggs, and both parents incubate them for 40 to 45 days. Typically, one or two young survive to fledge in about three months.

These majestic birds range from Mexico through much of western North America as far north as Alaska; they also appear in the east but are uncommon. Golden eagles are also found in Asia, northern Africa, and Europe.

Some golden eagles migrate, but others do not—depending on the conditions of their geographic location. Alaskan and Canadian eagles typically fly south in the fall, for example, while birds that live in the western continental U.S. tend to remain in their ranges year-round.

Took me a while to type that @_@

Originally the song It's Raining Men was offered to Diana Ross and Barbara Striesand and both turned it down. It was then given to two women who called themselves Two Tons of Fun before becoming The Weather Girls. The song was written by Paul Shafer of the Tonight Show. Martha Was, one half of The Weather Girls, later was the lead voice on C+C Music Factory's Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) and lead female singer for the group Black Box. When both groups featured model lip syncing her voice in their videos, she sued. C+C Music Factory and Ms. Wash settled out of court and she continued working with them until David Cole's death in 1994.

Actually, water barely conducts electricity at all. I think (if my C in 4th year chemistry helps here) that only one atom conducts electricity.

Even though in representations and comparisons, the horse in Ancient Egypt seemed to be a largely preferable animal, the donkey remained perhaps the most important functional creature in the Ancient world, until the introduction of the Camel in the 27th dynasty, I believe it was.

The modern donkey is a hybrid of the Nubian wild ass.

The average donkey can carry up to 40kg of weight, if evenly distributed. Carrying this weight, they can travel for 2-3 days without water, depending on how fast you travel.

Although donkeys are likely to have not been eaten, their flesh etc were used for medicinal purposes. Their milk was drank, especially by young children.

For the Ancient Egyptians, donkeys were valued possessions and were priced highly. Renting a donkey often cost more than standard wage, so it was likely that whoever rented them took on a second job to fund it.

Hyksos buried donkeys in pairs, often standing upright, at tomb entrances so that they may carry on their usefulness in the afterlife.

According to texts and art, it is unfitting for an Egyptian to ride a donkey, as it is not dignified. It is a demeanour reserved for foreigners. Ironically, in the Bible donkeys are used to transport women, children and important figures.

(I got a first in this dissertation I will spam you with my knowledge of donkeys in the ancient world..)

I went to Parliament and had a tour with my MP the other week - he said that even if you were having cardiac arrest the main priority would be to get the person out of parliament even if they could be saved because it is supposed to be a pure and focused place and that having a person die there would take the focus of the government off politics and the country.

It is also illegal to be in Parliament whilst in labour (having a baby).

Unless they threw it!

Another Parliament based one.

In the main atrium there is a statue of each part of England's parton saint - you can remember where everything is because of this as they are at the ends of the four corridors leading from the atrium.

Towards the House of Lords is Saint George (England) because that is the part of the building that the Queen uses.

Towards the House of Commons is Saint David (Wales) because that is where all the business is done and Welsh politicians are known for wanting to get things done.

Towards the Exit is Saint Patrick (Ireland) because the Irish are known for not being interested in politics.

And Towards the Bar is Saint Andrew (Scotland)... for reasons which are probably obvious
