As far as I understand, all you do is swap certain songs with another person. You can swap any song you like with anyone else, and same goes for them too :)
So it'd be something like:
Song 1 <-> Song 2
Song 3 <-> Song 4
(<-> = swap).
This is (apparently) a good way to listen to songs and music that you wouldn't normally listen to. Of course, being total opposites in music interest probably makes for strange / intriguing swaps.
Go nuts.
(if anyone wants to correct this do tell me what needs fixing)

I'm interested in doing a music swap with anyone; I will pick the songs I'll swap based on the person though =]

Just how do we "swap" songs exactly? Is file sharing involved as downloading mp3s is technically illegal.
The mods might complain if you do that.

pretty much this, or soundcloud or Spotify or whatever you use to listen to music away from your personal iTunes or whatever.
How about one person suggests a song (and provides a link) and then the next person listens to it and gives it a star rating before suggesting their own?
That could work just as well, I think we should all make a decision on which they'd prefer (doing a certain amount of swaps with a different poster or a "rate the song above" kind of deal). I'm open to either btw.

We set a limit of 4 minutes on the song (although we both went over xD) and found a YouTube link to the song, then posted them both on AIM. We listened, and said whether we liked them or not. We'd only really intended to do one, but then we ended up doing another two for various reasons =P

I have an idea as to how this could work in a group form;
Anyone who has spotify may know it has a collaborative playlist function, we could perhaps make a pkmn.net playlist which people add say 3 songs to, and then post here what they added? That would then have the same effect as a music swap, giving you a taste of different genres, but is somewhat easier to manage than a bunch of music swaps?
What do y'all think? I think it could function better if that's what people wanted?

And for those who don't have it...
I'd say you could PM someone saying you'll do a music swap with them or something...then you could exchange, say, three songs with reasonable times (ten minutes could pass because then I can suggest mine)...and go from there.

first we should have in the opening post a list of names who are interested in doing this, then we should take a vote on the best strategy or if anyone wants to be paired with anyone in particular.

spotify doesnt have anything from tool, the entire in rainbows album, or the first two smashing pumpkins albums so its not the most reliable thing in the world

I'm thinking, if nothing concrete happens we could just post a list of songs / albums that we feel deserve to be listened to and we casually just make our way through it (since that's what I've been doing anyway now, going through newer and older albums I hadn't got round to and giving them a chance)
I dunno though, it's up to Spriter and everyone else who previously wished to take part in this ^^;

one of my favourite pop-punk releases this year, singer from Hit The Lights (also a pop-punk band) put out this solo album and it's pretty decent. 2 or 3 skippable tracks but at least 6 solid pop-punk bangers.
The Speed Of Sound In Seawater - The Huge Wheel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLPNLXYOf4I) - Underwater Tell Each Other Secrets - Mathrock (is how the download from bandcamp came, at least)
really cool little band from Sacramento, home of some of my favourite bands (Dance Gavin Dance, A Lot Like Birds, these guys), they have 3 EPs, Blue Version, Red Version and Underwater Tell Each Other Secrets, and 1 album, First Contact. a lot of space-y themes in their lyrics from the last EP and the album, just a pretty great band to listen too. Red Version features a decent amount of screamed vocals courtesy of Cory Lockwood of A Lot Like Birds, as a warning if you don't like those kinds of vocals, but the rest is clean.
i went for 5 because i asked GL and he mentioned he'd do either 3 or 5 and why not. if you only check out one of these i recommend TSOSIS tho, really really good band.

So to start with I thought I'd recommend a song from a guy that doesn't have a solo album out yet. Ellery's the former front man of internet Indie Rock darlings WU LYF before splitting off due to wishing to chase his own career. The song itself has powerful production (with a Clams Casino sample) to help emphasize Ellery's raspy vocals as well as a vocal sample of a lecture as an outro (which you can skip if needs be =P)
[warning - it does have swearing after the second chorus so if you don't like swearing in your music then you may want to avoid that section of the song]

Genre: Dubstep
Year: 2007
Next is the first single (and first full track) from Burial's Untrue album. This song is kinda classic Burial in that it has that two step style beat alongside the ambient sounds of the production and the altered vocal pitches to prevent it being gender specific / more relate-able. Also in terms of dubstep as a genre it's very different from what you hear on the radio or popular use.

I went with this track purely because of how expansive the song is with different genres covered around an R&B base. A lot of different sounds are on show with some great songwriting. Also, as this song lasts just shy of 10 mins I'm counting it as two songs for the sake of fairness =]
[warning - the subject matter of the second half of the song is explicit so again, if you don't like certain subject matters or swearing (there's only one swear word used on two lines, but there are lines hinted towards explicit things) then you might want to avoid this track]

Genre: Symphonic / Neo-classical Metal
Album: Gate of Triumph
I'll give you a decently long 9-10 minutes of instrumental metal, to begin. Concerto Moon themselves are Japanese in origin. Simply put, this song shows off Norifumi Shima's fantastic skills that he puts to use on the guitar, and quite well too. I regard it as a very good example of how good Concerto Moon are. Check it out if you wish to :)

Album: Maximum Overload (2014)
I'm a big fan of these guys, this album is the second album since ZP Theart left the band. Maximum Overload itself is yet to be released, coming out on the 18th / 19th August depending on where you live. The Game shows how fast the band can be, and in fact it also features Matt Heafy from Trivium. The lyrics are more relateable than they were pre-Marc Hudson era now, and The Game is an example of that.

Album: My Head Is An Animal
Hailing from Iceland, OMAM are a pretty neat band. Lyrics in their songs are usually possess some pretty good imagery. Some even tell stories, like Dirty Paws. Your Bones is one of my favourites, it's quite relaxing in a way for me. I'd recommend OMAM, and if you like them...they've got an album coming up in the near future :)

I'm already running out of decent suggestions, that's no good. Most of AB III is a solid album, and I'd say a fair few songs on there are very much worth a listen. I don't actually have much to say, but Myles Kennedy is a good singer. Other songs I'd recommend include Slip To The Void and Ties That Bind.

I don't really listen to any /edgy/ under the radar bands so I guess mine are more "The Songs You Won't Have Heard" - "A Band You've Definitely Heard Of" Ft. "Album Tracks and B-Sides Versions"

This song has a really summery feel despite it being rather slow and quiet. It's a really peaceful song and tbh I always find myself listening to it in the dark after I go to bed. Idk I love it.

I guess The Feeling are kind of under the radar these days but remember when they had those couple of hits (Never Be Lonely, I Love It When You Call?) No? that's okay, this song is nothing like that anyway. I was originally going to put up their song from the same album Don't Make Me Sad but I couldn't find a decent quality video so you've got this instead. It's a bit crazy and pompous but if you fancy a bit of guitar and a laugh then I guess you should listen to this.

really underrated track from nins breakout album, real heavy if youre into that kinda stuff

really cool guitar work on this, completely instrumental but dont let that put you off because theyre extremely talented

the vocals might be a little hit or miss but i really like them, they have electronic elements in some stuff but this song is just an acoustic guitar.

ratfe is the solo project of james dewees, keyboard player for the get up kids and touring keyboardist for my chemical romance for a while. this is kinda generic emo but it's really catchy
the smashing pumpkins - bodies - mellon collie and the infinite sadness - alt rock
the smashing pumpkins were one of the bigger 90s alt rock bands and mellon collie and the infinite sadness is considered one of their best albums, a 26 or something track double album. this is one of my favorites from it due to the sheer energy on it although it's often overlooked.

(Please note i'm not going to look for links due to how slow my comp can be sometimes. You've probably heard me go on about most of these songs for ages.)
Blow Me Away & Failure - Breaking Benjamin
The vocalist, who the band is also named after, is pretty good in my opinion. He's also the only original member of the band left. The latter is a whole new band with him, so yeah. Every album is a bit like a different band with how often they change members. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's decent all around.
Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold
This is a little, ok, a lot, heavier than the above mentioned songs. The subject matter and the music video are twisted, but the drummer (who is now deceased) is amazing and the lead guitarist is pretty good. It's a nice song but way out there. If you want more of this drummer, Bat Country, Almost Easy, and Afterlife by this same band are for you. If you want the same band but lighter and more like more traditional metal or whatever they do (they don't really know half the time), Hail to the King and Shepard of Fire are good picks.
Rise Today - Alter Bridge
However, I like this song because, well, I dunno why, it just sounds good to me. No huge paragraph for this one, sorry.
Wish - Nine Inch Nails
Ok, this one is more up bread's alley. This one's decent and if you like songs like this, stop reading and go right to bread's playlists.
Beat It - Fall Out Boy
The same song as Michael Jackson, but as rock/pop or punk/pop or whatever genre they are. Honestly, I like this version more than Michael's. It's really good.

their music sounds a bit like a dream. very distant and calming and surreal. especially their "all creatures will make merry" album.

Okay okay okay.
1. Presto from Summer - Antonio Vivaldi (The Four Seasons) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuF4oYRktcA)
(Don't worry, it's only a short one and the guy leading - Our Lord and Saviour Nigel Kennedy - plays it faster than it's supposed to be, too). My favourite movement from Vivaldi's Four Seasons is the final movement from 'Summer' and is supposed to depict a summer storm. It's probably the most lively piece from the whole concerto. You'll probably recognise it because it's used in a ton of adverts and stuff and it's extremely mainstream classic. Enjoy it. Feel refined. Try and fail to stop yourself from getting the shivers.

Ahh, those old chestnuts. This is basically one of Muse's cheesy pop anthems that Matt loves so much these days. Revolt is probably my favourite track from Drones, tied with Reapers because it's so positive and singable.

Absolute belter. Kinda Belgian male Lorde.
4. Sitting - Cat Stevens (Catch Bull At Four) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djpnsqdNabM)
I grew up listening to Cat Stevens but Sitting is probably the song I listen to the most because it has a sort of resonance with me at the moment. It's about someone who is realising that he has to do what he wants as opposed to what others want him to do. It's all set to piano & Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam's lovely voice.

I couldn't choose between Showdown & Different so I guess listen to both or just one but they're quite similar. I love Pendulum & usually listen to them whilst walking/cleaning/working/exercising.

Take some epic production, some nice vocals (and effective lyrics), with dashings of lo-fi / ethereal quality which Tom Krell first used before a more cleaner sound. I still prefer his first album as a whole (see songs like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu1Dey8eD0A) and this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQM3VbO3ggI) which are more ambient and lo-fi styled if you're into that kind of thing) but this song is so good

Such a beautifully produced songs from one of the most incredible winter albums ever made. Not really the biggest Björk fan but this song, along with many others from the album, grabbed me with the use of little tinkering sounds (small drums, icy keys, stuff like that), with choir vocals really bringing out such a feeling out. If I ever lived in an igloo I'd listen to this.

Genre: Post Dubstep / Remix
Year: 2011
Really glitchy with lots of cool sounds coming through makes this so good; the remixed production added in by Jamie xx really works well with the spoken word element of Gil Scott-Heron, it's just a fantastic idea and really strong execution. It's almost like dance floor meets headphone style music which is great.
Machine Girl - Out By 16, Dead On The Scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw6BoC5qEcw)
Album: WLFGRL
Genre: Electronic
Year: 2014
Solid (and sometimes fast) drums, great atmosphere, dashings of movie quotes to build meaning to the song (and others they've done, this one's chilled in comparison to some of them in terms of loudness and ferocity). The whole sound is kinda jittery at times too which is pretty cool.
Sébastien Tellier - La Ritournelle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crblDrrcunQ)
Album: Politics
Genre: Indie Pop
Year: 2004
Featuring drumming from Tony Allen (which is a brilliant loop btw), this song has an array of instruments coming together to really feel epic in the build up to the singing, especially with the strings and the piano layers. The vocals aren't the strongest but the French accent does have a charm to it alongside the vocals. Whilst it is a production heavy track it doesn't get boring. Tellier has also appeared on Eurovision with the track Divine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz58Hw9hldw), the song feels so Euro it's crazy)

Album: Night Time, My Time
Genre: Synthpop / Indie Rock
Year: 2013
Sky has a great mix of rock / grunge elements mixed with some pop (moreso 80s) styled production, vocal style and lyrics. The fuzzy nature at times works really well and all of it so catchy. Some of her earlier stuff is more pop / dance orientated but the style used on the album worked better for me.
