As a jpeg/jpg and under 100kb would be ideal.
Basically so they are small enough to not crash the site but good quality enough to not look awful

I did remember but my scanner is dead and I've been rather caught up in work this Christmas. Sorry but it might be quite some time before I can scan things in. =[
