Title: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on February 13, 2008, 20:38
Okay, you asked for it, now here it is! Sick of the red? Sick of those Eeveelutions? You can be rid of them (well, soon you can be).

I have just fixed theme changing, after reworking some CSS to make everything work properly. A simple second theme, where I didn't even change the button, can be found by going here (http://pkmn.net/?themeid=2).

But Joeno, you may ask, I like that grey (or gray), I want to use it everywhere. How can I?

Simple. Click the Customize link at the top of every page, and expand your general settings. Or, well, go here (http://pkmn.net/?action=usercp&max=11).

But Joeno, you may say, I don't like any of these themes. What can I do?

Get banned for disliking our work I mean, create your own! A testset with some basic instructions (which will be expanded at an indeterminate moment in the future) can be found here (http://pkmn.net/joeno/themedevkit.zip). This will be documented more fully at some point in the future, but take this as your chance to experiment with things.

The people to thank here? Psythor laid the foundation when he created the original version of the architecture, and he obviously did the web design. I just patched some things and moved some CSS definitions around.

Now get web2.0-ing and submit your content for us to use.

Theme changes only apply to the site. The forum code isn't as easily converted, and so forum theme changes will probably not be implemented for some time.

Ooh, the grey is nice. Are you going to make a new banner and menu bars for it at some point? Or is it just a sample?

It's a lot of fun messing around with the testkit, it's so tempting to cover the test page in a Rattata skin. Because I have a life like that =]

Unfortunately I don't appear to be able to open the sample page in IE without unzipping the folder. Is there a way of doing it?

What. No ALEX skin?

Hey, I need a bit of practice, right? ;]

I promise once I get the hang of it [read: once I get the test page to open in IE] I'll make a lovely emo Alex skin for you, Rex.

Orly? Yeah, Psythor created the foundations of the site, and full credit to him for that. But, if you have an entirely new architecture of the site that you need to work to for new styles, then it takes a lot more than "patching some things up". Believe me. I write CSS for my website. Stop playing yourself down D:

I think I have an idea as well for a skin...

It was just something thrown together to test. Maybe someone will make some images for it, but when I would, it'd be ugly.

You need to unzip the folder, it needs access to some other files. Zip-files aren't intended to be used when zipped, that is only useful for looking at its content, not serious use.

You obviously don't know how the code division works on this site.

Psythor wrote the foundations of v9 as well. This new architecture is his, the code to support the styles is his, and all I had to do was patch some lines of code so they were also using dynamic code. They were previously kept static to get some stuff working.

Psythor DID write the large part of this. I am NOT the sole coder of v9. You do NOT need to tell me what to take credit for, as I know that extremely well, and quite obviously, I know this far better than you do.

You don't need to act as a motivational trainer, so don't bother doing it.

Skipped this bit

Psythor wrote all of the CSS used on the site. I have awful colour coordination. All I did was a bit of copy-pasting, and for the new theme change a few colours.

Ah, okay. I'll just have to pester Alex to let me use his computer to rezip the file for submission then =] Thanks.

Do we send our themes by email?
Or by pm?
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Dragonpika on February 13, 2008, 22:50
Which bit of the script relates to the background of the whole page? At the moment I'm ending up with a big ugly white box under whatever the article is, which shows up when I change other colours.

Or by pm?

You can't send zip-files, images or CSS-files through PMs in a usable way.

Which bit of the script relates to the background of the whole page?

You'd need to use the body tag, but I don't think we can easily support different background colours for the content areas without breaking other things. A light, close to white colour might work, but black is almost certainly out.

I think I'm ready to submit my theme. Should I send it to admin@pkmn.net?

EDIT: Sent anyway
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on February 14, 2008, 17:43
Yes.

You also only need to send the /theme/ directory, nothing more. (You aren't allowed to change more anyway)

I have Simply Grey as my default skin. Does it only affect the site itself so far? Reason I ask is because the Forums don't seem to be grey yet...
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on February 14, 2008, 17:58
The question regarding the forums is answered in the original post. The way to send in themes has also been touched upon, so you may want to be more specific.

Also, thank Mushroom. Pirate Black (http://pkmn.net/?themeid=3)

Post by: MonsterMon64 on February 14, 2008, 18:16
Yes, the Pirate Black theme is awesome. ;D

Ah, about the forums... sorry about that. ^^; Although, the title bars for certain sub-categories on the site's pages are still red with yellow text.

...It's easier if I show you a print screen... http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/144/pkmnpirateskinua6.png

For some reason, the Pirate Black theme doesn't change the bg2 class. Don't ask me why, I don't know either.

Post by: Mushroom on February 14, 2008, 19:05
Yes.

You also only need to send the /theme/ directory, nothing more. (You aren't allowed to change more anyway)

Oops, I rezipped the whole thing and set it back. Is that OK?
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on February 14, 2008, 19:10
It works, but is more work for me, is more error prone, and creates larger files.
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Mushroom on February 14, 2008, 19:15
Ok, if/when I do more, I'll only send the /theme/ in future

Okay, I've sent the files needed, I think - was I supposed to send the individual items? My computer didn't seem to want to send the actual folder, so I sent it in pieces.

I would be really happy if this feature were to extend to the forums, as I'm on them about 98% of the time I'm on this site. Yes I've read and understand what it says in the first post regarding this.
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes

Thinking about it now... I believe it requires forum code changes, so basically... won't happen in the forseeable future.

Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on February 14, 2008, 20:45
So... what's the problem with zipping just that specific folder again?
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Lorem Ipsum on February 14, 2008, 20:48
It works, but is more work for me, is more error prone, and creates larger files.

I wouldn't know how to zip the folder either.
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Lord Raven on February 14, 2008, 20:53
Right click on the folder and it should give you options saying "Add to archive" and stuff like that.  Well, it does that if you have winrar; for other zip things it should work similarly and even then, you should be able to load it directly into a new archive you make.  Unless that's not the problem...  o.o

Joeno, could you add an extra class to the CSS for smaller text? Like adding:
Code: [Select]
.smalltext {
font-size: 10pt;
}

It's just that somebody in the new page was asking about small text in HTML, and it would be useful if you could use CSS for it, like <div class="smalltext">Yay, this is small text!</div> in your work.
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on March 04, 2008, 05:29
You mean, the one that is already there? From style.css:

Code: [Select]
        .smalltext {
                font-size: 10px;
        }

Out of a usability point of view, however, I must forcefully suggest that you do not use it in pages. It has little use, content-wise, and makes everything less readable and useful.
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Dragonpika on March 06, 2008, 17:38
Yes, that's one of the things that went wrong with my Scizor skin.. on my screen text looks a lot bigger than it does on a lot of others, so I made it smaller and thus unreadable to most. I still need to fix that, and tweak the colour on the Rattata skin, but I never seem to get around to it.

I love Richard's Mudkip skin x3 <3 and Blake's Smeargle.

Right...I've put my mediocre and semi-retired skills to work, and came up with a Musician's Theme. Problem is...I extracted everything, and can't seem to put it back. Shall I just email the 'theme' folder to somebody?
Title: Re: ARCHITECTURE: Theme changes
Post by: Joeno on March 25, 2008, 20:10
No, because it makes it difficult for me to test things. I can't really accept that as a submission.

What program did you use to extract it? Just about any program I know that can do it can compress the files as well.

If you did the MSP banner style for the forums, it can't be too hard to implement styles for the forums as well :\
