TV Series / Mega Evolution Special Act IV
« on: October 24, 2015, 14:43 »
With all the news about Zygarde and Ash's Greninja comes an Act IV of the Mega Evolution Special! Zygarde's set to make an appearence in at least a few different forms. I'm excited to see its debut in the anime and maybe some sort of announcement tied with it.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this sort of topic, but I'm wondering if there's a website that gives me a list of Pokemon that can learn a combination of moves? I'm looking for something with Will-o-Wisp and Safeguard (I now know that Ninetales gets both), but it'd be nice to be able to search for these sorts of things.

Any suggestions?

Team Building / VGC 2015 Team - Safeguard the Salamence
« on: April 05, 2015, 15:05 »
Hey guys, haven't put down one of these in a while. I was just taking a shower when a sudden lightbulb of inspiration hit me. "If the one problem that physical attackers have to deal with are burns and intimidate, what happens if I safeguard one of them and make the other one a risky mindgame?" Put two and two together and this team was born.

Salamence @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Double-Edge
- Dragon Dance
- Protect
- Earthquake

The core player of the team. Double-Edge gets rid of all those pesky amoongus as well as just generally doing a nice bit of damage. Dragon Dance lets me outspeed scarfers if I get a chance to use it, and gives me another option to avoid getting Sucker Punched. Not sure about Earthquake, I could slash it out for Rock Slide to deal with Charizard-Y but EQ lets me hit Heatran and has higher base damages. Landorus-T also carries those two moves so it's tricky to decide.

Meowstic (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Psychic
- Safeguard
- Light Screen
- Reflect

Need a bit of help with the EV spread for this one. I'm not convinced that full defense is necessary. I guess it doesn't matter too much since I have Double Screens but still. Considering swapping Lum Berry for Light Clay, since Assist Prankster Liepard doesn't seem common at all. But VGC games are so short anyway that I'm not sure that it'll make much difference anyway, in which case Sitrus Berry is probably preferred. I only desperately need it for the safeguarding anyway.

Milotic @ Leftovers
Ability: Competitive
EVs: 236 HP / 156 Def / 100 SpA / 12 SpD / 4 Spe
- Scald
- Icy Wind
- Safeguard
- Protect

My primary option to deal with intimidate users and other stat debuffers. Considering it's supposed to be used as some sort of Competitive sweeper, I'm thinking the EV spread might need to be overhauled. Currently it's just something I lifted off a nugget bridge article (like everything in this team). But Icy Wind gives the team some much needed (?) speed control, and having another source of safeguard is beneficial. Scald could be slashed for Surf but then it's not like I have a great water resistance on my own side either.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- U-turn
- Superpower

You probably see plenty of this on the OU ladder as it is. Its role in VGC 2015 isn't greatly different, apart from added Rock Slide flinch shenanigans. Superpower is run to hit Kangaskhan, Ferrothorn, Tyranitar and other such Pokemon who do not appreciate a fist to the face. Since Salamence is going to mega-evolve fairly early on most times, having another source of intimidate is essential.

Rotom-Heat @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 4 SpA / 136 SpD / 28 Spe
- Thunderbolt
- Overheat
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect

Mostly included for burn support. Heat form gives a bit more variety to my team coverage, giving me more opportunities to smack those Steel, Grass and Steel/Grass types round the face. Water types, despite having those water type moves, still get a  little anxious around this Rotom because of the Thunderbolt potential.

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Wide Guard
- Flash Cannon
- King's Shield

Another little something to help deal with Kangaskhan. It's untouched by Return and Power-up punch, and Sucker Punch and Earthquake risk proccing the Weakness Policy. As a measure against Kangaskhan, it would be nice to have Sacred Sword on it, but it's also my only measure against Fairy Types, like Clefable and Togekiss (I suppose I have Rotom-H for that one), and Psychic types (I hear Cresselia is back in fashion). Wide Guard might turn out to not be essential, but I'll get back to you on that.

((Side note: The metagame spriting project page is mad hard to navigate. I know no-one's working on it, but I guess I can still express a need to perhaps tidy it up. I think putting them up somewhere on the site would be cool. Do we have a Pokedex page or something? You know what I might make this subject its own thread in a bit.))

So yeah, first impressions people?

Team Building / Greninja Suspect test
« on: December 23, 2014, 23:48 »
These are dark days for the frog. Following his nerf on his U-smash in Smash 4, the mascot of the sixth generation is now being considered for the ubers tier over at Smogon University. I imagine they're due to its blistering fast speed and the new acquisition of a plethora of new moves, courtesy of the ORAS move tutors.

Gunk Shot, for example, with a bit of attack investment lets Greninja OHKO Azumarill, for example. Low Kick now beats Assault Vest Tyranitar and dents Ferrothorn, as well as other steel types. This combined with the previous coverage, from moves such as Ice beam, Hydro Pump, Dark Pulse, Grass Knot, and Hidden Power Fire lets Greninja beat almost every Pokemon in the tier, provided it takes the correct four moves.

Sure Chansey still eats up hits pretty well regardless, but its pink friend Clefable now has to think twice about that gunk shot. Similarly, Scarf Landorus-T seems to be popular as the usual check (?) to Greninja shenanigans. But it seems, so the argument goes, that Pokemon that can stand against the ninja frog are few and far between.

Although if it does get banned, then I suppose Empoleon falls back into the realms of irrelevance again :(

Team Building / ORAS Metagame
« on: October 30, 2014, 23:55 »
Thought I'd start a thread for predictions and thoughts on the new games metagame. Now that Pokemon Showdown's been updated for the inclusion of ORAS features, what better time to start speculation? With the introduction of so many mega-evolutions and the return of tutor moves, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest mid-gen shifts in the series so far. Pokemon that fans have been asking for a while have now received mega-evolutions (sorry Flygon), and even ones that have been almost forgotten about have returned with a new mega.

Personally, I've been having fun using Mega-Slowbro as a sort of Crocune with Calm Mind, Rest, Scald and Sleep Talk. Since his physical defence jumps to over 500 after mega evolving, and with calm mind boosts under his belt, Slowbro can easily become a giant unkillable Scald-spewing Beyblade of doom.
Mega-Salamence is also shaping up to be a pretty huge threat, with access to plenty of options thanks to his blend of recovery and staying power with Roost and Substitute, and the omnipresent threat of a sweep because of his infamous Dragon Dance. Plus, this is amplified now that he has one of the most powerful moves in the game with STAB: Aerilate Return.
Unfortunately, Richard seems to be right about Mega-Swampert. He's very underwhelming thus far, totally walled by many bulky waters (Rotom-w and Slowbro, mostly) and lacks recovery. What's more, even his base 140 speed in the rain is speed crawled by his grass type counterpart, Mega Sceptile, and also Mega-Bedrill. As with a few other Pokemon, had he arrived a gen earlier then perhaps he could've stood a chance but as it stands I've yet reason for him to be considered. Then again, his typing does make him a little tricky to take out bar Sceptile so there's something.
Speaking of which, Mega-Sceptile seems OK so far. Obviously, it's very fast but despite its buffs I still find its attacks to be somewhat lackluster still. I imagine it has no difficulties in tearing up squishies, such as Greninja, but otherwise it finds difficulties in most special walls, including Heatran and Zapdos. I suppose that's to be expected, if it could still beat those then it would be broken for certain. Mega-Sceptile should be comfortably seated in the OU tier.

That's all I'll say for now, obviously there's still plenty of untouched subjects. I still haven't looked through all the new tutor moves, but things like Gunk Shot Greninja and Crunch Gyarados are also worth discussing. Leave your impressions in this thread!

Gaming / Yet another 3DS announced.
« on: August 29, 2014, 15:11 »
So, less than a year after I grabbed my 3DS XL from CEX, Nintendo's gone ahead and announced another 3ds model.
Aside from generally looking a little nicer, it also features another control circle pad above the ABXY buttons. The face buttons have gotten a recolour to match the original SNES controller, and the 3D is meant to look nicer.

But the most important change is probably the increase in CPU performance (capacity? Power? IDK what to call it, it's a better CPU). That means that we can be seeing games that will only be able to be played on the newer 3DS. So far, the only game that utilizes the enhanced CPU is a port of the 2010 JRPG Wii hit, Xenoblade Chronicles (who's main character, Shulk, has been announced for the new SSB roster BTW!).

No announcement for an international release of the console just yet, but it comes out in Japan at least on October the 11th, this year.

Oh yeah, check this out: Chanegeable covers!

Trades / LF-Pawniard with sucker punch and pursuit
« on: July 23, 2014, 02:58 »
I don't mind the nature or even the IVs, I just need a Pawniard with those two moves. Bisharp works as well. Reply if you have one, and hopefully we can negotiate a deal.

Team Building / Japanese "metagame"/commonly played rules?
« on: June 02, 2014, 18:28 »
Probably better off asking somewhere else but I figure I'll ask here first.

I've done a little bit of googling on it but it seems in Japan the only ruleset that's really developed is the VGC one? Here we use Smogon a lot alongside, but obviously since the site's in English that limits a lot of Japanese people from participating.

My only personal experience of Japanese players come from battle spot and some VGC replays, so I'm not sure if there's anything else other than those rules. I guess what I'm asking is whether or not there's something similar to Smogon in Japan, or if Japanese players only use whatever official Nintendo/battle frontier rules.

Team Building / VGC 2014 RMT
« on: March 03, 2014, 19:26 »
I've been playing a lot of VGC lately and I found this team is pretty OK so far, but I'm looking for further recommendations from the good people of pkmn.net.
Without further ado...

Mega-Gengar@Gengarite
Timid Nature
252SpAtk/252Spd/4hp
-Substitute
-Hidden Power Ice
-Shadow Ball
-Sludge Bomb

I'd say this guy is the core member of the team. We got shadow ball for the STAB, sludge bomb for both STAB and fairies (although I feel focus blast could be better? Sure it kills azumarills but those klefkis and mawiles are causing slight problems), Hidden Power Ice to kill garchomps. I can get a free substitute off usually with the Lucario support and the mega-evo, but losing levitate really hurts against the wide amount of earthquakes flying around. I could replace gengarite with life orb, but I feel the speed increase is really important. Alakazam could also be used instead of this guy but I'm a little uncertain about how well he does.

Lucario@Leftovers
Careful Nature
252HP/252SpD/4Def
-Follow Me
-Extremespeed/Bullet Punch
-Detect
-Quick Guard

Most of the time, I'll lead this guy along with Gengar. Follow me lets Lucario take those dark type attacks that would be aimed at Gengar like a champ. Extremespeed is there to take off focus sashes and double team pokemon that Gengar alone might not be able to take out. Quick Guard helps nullify those prankster T-waves from meowstick and klefki, as well as stopping Gale Wings Brave Birds from Talonflame. I run Detect over Protect to stop any Imprison shenanigans, but looking back that strategy doesn't seem to be too prevalent, so I could just switch it back to protect for the double shields and PP.
I'm not too sure about the EV Spread, I'd like to specify it a little more for whatever various threats are flying around.

Rotom-W@Sitrus Berry
Calm Nature
252HP/44Def/4SpAtk/180SpDef/28Spd
-Discharge
-Will o Wisp
-Light Screen
-Hydro Pump
As much as I would like to say I made that spread myself, I just stole it off some guy from nugget bridge, who in turn got it from a Japanese VGC player or something. It works quite well for me so far, so I'm just sticking with it for now. Will-o-Wisp and Light Screen let me effectively shut down most threats that are charging at my team, both physical and special. Discharge creates a nice synergy with Garchomp and Hydro Pump is there for a bit of nice coverage.

Garchomp@Yache Berry
Rough Skin
252Atk/252Spd/4HP
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide
-Dragon Claw
-Protect
Fairly standard garchomp set. EQ and Dragon Claw give a nice bit of STAB, Rock Slide takes out Charizards and Talonflames, protect because VGC. Yache Berry is amazing for Garchomp since a lot of Ice moves flying at him in VGC don't have STAB and are in fact usually just Hidden Powers. At best, they tickle him, leaving me in a good position to 2HKO most things. I run rough skin over sand force, even though I have a Tyranitar, because sandstorm rough skin is useful in those tense 1v1 moments against other physical attackers.

Talonflame@Focus Sash
Jolly Nature
4hp/252Atk/252Spd
-Brave Bird
-Flare Blitz
-Tailwind
-Protect

Use ALL the OPs! Talonflame gives a nice bit of priority on my team, which it could really do with. Flare Blitz also gives me something to hit those steel/fairy type pokemon, the previously mentioned Klefki and Mawile. Brave Bird is also nice to get those speedy sweepers. Protect is good to save it from Rock type attacks, such as the common rock slide. Not sure what to put for the third slot; Tailwind is nice but Talonflame is often too frail to set it up with. Also not sure what to really put as an item, since focus sash will probably mean I'll only get one hit off due to recoil. I run 252/252 to outspeed any other Talonflames that could be around.

Tyranitar@Air Baloon
Jolly Nature
90HP/16Atk/28Def/124SpDef/240 Spd
-Rock Slide
-Crunch
-Taunt
-Protect
So what's with the crazy EV spread? With this EV spread, I'm outspeeded by Politoed and Speed variants of Charizard-Y, meaning I can get my sandstorm down and get the SpAtk boost to not die from Hydro Pump/SolarBeam. Neutral variants of Charizard will get outspeed or speed tied and just die from rock slide. I could take off another 4 EVs to make sure I get outsped though. Neutral Natured Politoed should still outspeed, so my sandstorm should still go down. The rest of the spread lets me take an aqua jet from azumarill pretty well, and I can't remember what the rest of it's for but I'm sure its important for some reason. Rock Slide and Crunch for coverage. Taunt is really useful since it helps me shutdown Trick Room and other such nonsense, and lets me at least restrict the options of those prankster users flying around.
EDIT: Aaaand all that stuff about Charizard-Y is just wrong because the mega evolution screws it over

FC: 2621-3543-5368

Hello all everybody, like many of you I reside in the GMT time zone so it would be great if you could keep that in mind when you challenge me. I am currently in full time education so it may be a bit difficult to sort out a time slot but it should be possible to work around that. We'll use single battle normal rules, so we all get autoleveled to 50, on Pokemon X or Y for the Nintendo 3DS.

And now for some more rules:

-No Über tier pokemon
-Evasion and OHKO moves, items, abilities or otherwise are banned
-6v6, standard one mega evolution on each side
-Kangaskhanite, Blazikenite and Gengarite are banned
-Speed Boost and Gale Wings variants of Blaziken and Talonflame repsectively are banned, as well as Moody and Swift Swim.
-Item Clause, no two pokemon may hold to same item

Looking forward to the upcoming battles, everyone!

EDIT: Due to popular demand, I guess I'm also available on pokemon showdown. but if you battle me in game and win , i'll give you a nice 4-5 IV tentacool or whatever the hell i'm breeding atm
