Updates / TOURNAMENT TRACKING The final new feature of the list
« on: January 16, 2008, 15:35 »
Okay, so it should have been released last Sunday or something. We're late. Blame me being busy on more important life goals.

Anyway, the cool thing! Tournament tracking. An upgrade of a small feature I coded before, this can be used to keep track of WiFi or Netbattle (knockout) tournaments, but also sprite-offs, writing contests, or whatever else people prefer. As long as it's one vs one.

So how does it work? A brief summary, although you should be able to figure it out. If you want to run a tournament, you request to do so. One of the admins approves or denies it. Let's assume it's the former, that's more fun. At that point, you need to do some work. Get everyone who wants to be a part to sign up through the provided links. People can find it on their own, but you obviously want to encourage them.

You approve the people who sign up. When enough people have, you can start the tournament. At that point, people have their battles or whatever. When a member has won, both the winner and the loser confirm it (let's go for fair play here!) and the winner is send through to the next round. A tournament leader or admin can override this, sending you through immediately. This goes on to the final round, where, when the winner is decided, the tournament is obviously over.

Yeah, I guess you should just try it out and see for yourself.

Updates / COMMENTS A member-only nice summary
« on: January 06, 2008, 15:52 »
Well yeah, we have more features in the waiting. I heard there's been some traces of rule 20 here, but it's hard to find out yet. Almost as if you had to do something else.

ANYWAYS, yeah. We have a nice summary feature called Comments where you can see new comments, the most popular comments, your own comments, and whatever else we're going to think of at some point in the future.

Sure, it's not much, but it's got a nice moderating feature that I enjoy using.

Updates / TCG INDEX (What, even more? Are they crazy?)
« on: December 30, 2007, 17:33 »
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, our feature release cycle continues even further. This time, we have updated and recoded our TCG Index!

HERE

Data is not always complete. Card lists come from an earlier version of the database - unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge or the time to track down and insert the newer set lists, if they exist. It confuses me.

Updates / SQUADS: Something old, something new...
« on: December 23, 2007, 17:03 »
Our next advent feature, ladies and gentlemen, is called 'Squads'. Why squads, you ask? Well, because it features squads of Pokemon.

Yes, we make part of the Teambuilding forum redundant, as our new feature allows you to create your own squad of Pokemon. Give moves, abilities, and whatever more.

This feature was partially coded by Psythor, this time it's not completely my own.

SQUADS

One thing, though... the valid moves information is currently retrieved from the list of moves associated with a Pokemon in Dex. That list is not yet complete. If you want to help with that, again, contact me through IM, email or IRC so I can give you information on how to submit these.

Updates / DEX That one feature you've all been waiting for
« on: December 16, 2007, 19:54 »
This is huge, people. This is what you have been waiting for.

Remember how we had a rather out of date Pokedex that never contained all information? Well that's true no longer. Not only do we have a Pokedex, we dare say that it is one of the most expansive and in-depth Pokedexes found online! (Well, with some notes. More on that later.)

What it lists? Pokemon, items, games, abilities, moves, locations, whatever we can represent in a structured way.

It's called Dex, and it's wonderful. Check out those maps!

Dex, PKMN.NET's Pokedex (and more).

Now, on to some related matters. There's a number of issues you may have with the information we offer. Since they can probably be divided in three areas, I'll discuss each of these:

Errors. This is mostly done by hand, and we're bound to have messed up some of these things. If you want them corrected, it's best to use the 'Report Errors' link at the bottom of each page, as usual. That way, we know what page you are talking about, and are automatically linked to it. It also provides us with some further debug information.
If you, for some reason, make a longer list of errors, mailing me personally might be the easiest way to handle this. Don't PM me, in any case, as PMs are the hardest to trace down.

Incomplete information. Because of the sheer amount of information that needed to be entered, we didn't get all of it done. We are working on correcting this. In general, this is done in some form of order, so if surrounding things do have the information, it may in fact be a bug. A (not complete) list of things that fall in this category:
* Location descriptions. These are getting close to completion
* Location on a game's worldmap. I'm working on these. RBY are done, GSC are almost done, the others have less progress.
* Maps for a location in a game. This is added together with trainers, items, location links and some others. These are a lot of work and will likely take their time.
* Pokemon Diamond/Pearl moves. These are a lot of work, and I've been trying to get this done with some others. This is where I can use your help. You can contact me on IRC or through an instant messenger if you are interested in helping me out, so I can assign you something to work on. Only do this if you expect to have some time left for rather simple data entry.

Missing information. These, you can mention in this thread (or in a seperate suggestions thread). We can't guarantee that we'll add everything you suggest, and more importantly, that it'll be added in a short amount of time. However, we can't know what information you want if you don't tell us what you want.
Some things that we are planning to add are:
* Where an item is found in a game - what shops, locations etc
* Tie-ins with episode guides. In which episode did Ash meet a Surskit again?

Updates / CAPTION CONTEST newly relaunched
« on: December 02, 2007, 13:53 »
People of the united PKMN.NET

We have, after many deliberations, decided to relaunch a feature that has been part of the site for some time, but had been removed with v9's release. It is back now, new and slightly better.

There's a large help thing included with the feature. You can suggest your own images, and vote the captions of others.

But really, instead of talking about it, just go there now!

Caption Contest!

Oh, and we've heard that rule 20 left a mark there. I haven't found it yet, but if you spot it, let us know. It might make sense in a few weeks.

Updates / NAME RATER CONTEST
« on: November 25, 2007, 17:57 »
"A Name Rater contest?" you might ask yourself. "Why's that?"

Well, you shouldn't ask, as we already have an answer available. It's here. You see, we recently received this message from the Name Rater:

Quote
I really hope that in poor light, without my glasses and heavily under the influence of alcohol, a few of you might actually begin to look half suited to the task I'm about to suggest. I wish to announce my impending resignation as The Kanto Name Rater. I won't mince my words - the names are all appalling, the expectations too high and you can't get a decent insult thrown at you for want of trying. I cannot continue anymore, and in an effort to make myself even more of a legend around here, I need somebody only vaguely terrible to succeed me. That person could be YOU. If you can impress myself, my Johto cousin (and due to irritating contractual laws and results of late night Poker games, that hyperactive toilet brush from Route 201) then you could well be the person who becomes the new Kanto Name Rater.

So here's the thing. We are going to need someone to replace him. The admins are, as you know, too busy or too lazy to replace him. So, we're having a contest. During the coming few weeks, you people will get a chance to show us how good your name rating skills really are. Your names will be judged by the two name raters and Sentret and be voted on in the end by all the members. The winner will be added to the name rating team! Rejoice.

How is this going to work? Well, it's really simple. You now get about a week to prepare, ask questions, and so on, as well as signing up for the contest. After that, each week will have an assignment for all contestants that a are still in the race, involving several forms of name rating. The name raters and Sentret will judge these and grant immunity to one or two contestants, while the remainder of the group to continue to the next round will be decided through a poll on the forums. In the end, the best rater will be the winner and become the new PKMN.NET Name Rater!

A topic to sign up will appear in the PKMN.NET forum soon.

Ooh, and you'll see more stuff that was actually planned by use before this announcement appear over the next few weeks as well.

Updates / PKMN.NET: Official Meet in London
« on: July 31, 2007, 00:37 »
For logistic reasons, we will be forced to end our signups this Thursday!

As has been informally announced and discussed before, I will be visiting London on my vacation near the end of August. Since it's the perfect opportunity to bring many people from this fine site together in one place, we have decided to organize a PKMN.NET meet for our members. It will be on 26 August, a Sunday, during the afternoon. The current schedule is that the meet runs from 1PM to 5PM, which should be more than enough. Be sure to have everything arranged - although admins will be in the vicinity earlier than that, we've got our own stuff to do at that time, and we are not going to wait for family/etc to pick you up for long after that time. (Especially since some of us are planning to go for some food and so on after that)

To make such we don't get all kinds of weirdos attracted to the event, you are sort of going to need to sign up for this. This, depending mostly on your age, will require a few steps:
If you are at least 18 years old let us know here or in private. You're old and wise enough to decide for yourself.
If you are 15 years or younger we want you to ask your parents for permission, and we want to be sure you did. We want to get word from your parents, and we don't want you to forge it. We are also going to be extremely cautious about accepting people, so be prepared to be turned down if we decide it's not okay for you to come. In particular, the younger, the less chance there is of us accepting you. We are absolutely not interested in babysitting. See this
If you are in between these ages, we still want you to ask your parents. We're not going to double check for you, but are also prepared to answer any questions they may have, if they find it necessary.
Once it goes through, you'll get access to a special forum where the specifics will be discussed.

In any case, we reserve the right to reject your 'application', since we cannot always be sure of the intention of people we barely know and who have rarely posted here. I doubt it will be a major problem, but we do want to be careful.

And yes, we realise people may not be truthful about their age. We accept no responsibility for what happens if you lie, and may decide that it's best for you to go home asap.

In general, PKMN.NET cannot take any responsibility for what happens to you while travelling to and from this event, or while it's happening. We'll try to make sure stuff goes alright, but cannot make any guarantees.

Your Art / Cards - Images!
« on: May 25, 2007, 20:09 »
Ladies and gentlemen,

As you will have seen, we have recently launched our latest feature, Cards. As you may have also seen, it rather lacks graphics. So we ask your help! Send us images that look good, and we may use it for that card!

We need the following images
* Something that looks like a proper album front, as well as a general logo
* A header image for each set.
* An image for every card.

There are the following conditions:
* Each image must be in .png format (a hardcoded limitation) and must be approximately 450x450 pixels. Card images must also include a thumbnail of 100x100.
* Set images must include the set's name in a clearly readable way.
* We want original art, drawn by you, that doesn't look bad. Sprite Art is not accepted.

You get the following:
* Proper credit
* A 'Card Artist' Special card
* If the card is not 'Special', a copy of that card, as well as a ten-card booster
* A twenty-card booster for special cards or set images. If a set image, ten of them will always come from the set.
* A 25-card card booster for the other special images.

If we receive multiple images for the same card, and both look good, we will most likely create more cards so we can use all the art. Do not, however, send in art for cards that already have it.

If you're done, mail art to joenoo@gmail.com . Only mail art for cards that do not have art, but that have been created. Include your username and the name you want to be credited with in your mail, since I can't trace it back otherwise! Also leave a message at http://pkmn.net/forums/index.php?topic=60897.0 to let people know what you are working on, to prevent double work.

Your Sprite Art / Double-posting and other rules-breaking
« on: October 02, 2005, 17:38 »
Ladies and gentlemen spriters,

We have noticed that there is far more double-posting in this forum than in others, as well as other violations of the rules.

Since we are, quite frankly, getting sick of the people using this specific forum breaking the rules, we are giving you this single last chance:

If we do not see a significant improvement in the way the rules are followed, especially having no double-posting and no breaking the three word rules, this forum will be restricted to only those that have proven to follow the rules. Every single one of you will need to get permission to post here first, and no, you will not be allowed to place your sprite art topics in another forum.

Reminder: Ladies and gentlemen, the rules also mention advertising as not being allowed. This includes a certain Freewebs site that appears to be popular with some regulars.

Stealing: I've just spend quite some time cleaning some things up, so here are a few things I want all of you to remember:
If you see someone stealing, there is only one thing to do: Either the person who created it, or someone who has permission from the original creator, must contact the other admins with proof of this theft.
If you do not have proof, your accusation is baseless, and I have no reason to believe someone stole it. If you are not the original creator, it could be that - without your knowledge - the original creator has given permission for it to be used, and you do not know the terms under which this was done. Again, the accusation could very well be baseless.
If you instead accuse people on the forums, it will be taken as harassment and an attempt to start a flamewar, and it will be you who gets a warning and who is likely to be warned, get their access to this forum revoked, or be completely banned.

Also, I am making one other demand, following the demands others are making. Almost all sprites here are based on the work of Nintendo. Although they have been altered, they are still derived works. Since you are all making a huge fuss out of how someone might have stolen from another person, if you give credit, you must also give credit to those who made your original art: The Pokemon Company, through Gamefreak and Nintendo. If you do not do so, you yourself are in violation of copyright law, and I don't see why we'd have to go after people who stole 'your' art as well. You want people to stop using your material, so make it clear that that is based on the material of someone else as well.
