Australia actually got a goal, I'm just happy about that.

Referee was awful in the Brasil game, but I guess some home decisions are to be expected.

Still calling Belgium to win it.

A lot of the refs have been terrible, I get the whole having a wide spread of refs in trying to be fair but it really should just come down to who's the best and let them ref

EDIT: James Rodriquez, top top player. Really hope he goes to a massive club in the summer.

Shaqiri's set pieces today have been poor

Shame about the result but there were a lot of positives from the England game. Really impressed with Sterling in the #10 role.

EDIT: WHAT AN ENDING

Superb tackle, great counter

Today's games got me so heated

Why Nigeria didn't start Ameobi I'll never know. Dude was easily their biggest threat (not even joking either).

Pepe you donkey.

Dunno if I can be arsed with USA v Ghana tbh

also Balotelli asked "Why always me?"

They look pretty promising indeed. To be honest, they mostly had quite the story behind them being in Bosnia during that time. Also, heard that Ibrahimovic could've opted to play for Bosnia...

That would be a really solid team with him (not that it isn't solid already), Dzeko / Zlatan up front :O

I can kinda see why he didn't, he wanted to stick with the team that were so successful in qualifying. Unfortunately the players just didn't step up on the big occasion.

The Zlatan Bosnia thing's blown out of proportion. His dad was Bosnian and his mother was Croatian, both had emigrated to Sweden before his birth and he had always been brought up there and therefore himself hadn't been through the hardship compared with the other Bosnian players (like Dzeko who, if it wasn't for his mother telling him he wasn't allowed to play football in the park, could have been killed in a kid). Seen a lot of people jump on the Bosnian bandwagon and subsequently have a go at Zlatan for representing Sweden and it's all a bit "ehhhhhhh" really.

Purely from a football perspective Dzeko / Zlatan as a strikeforce would be very good to see though, two very complete strikers.
Title: Re: World Cup 2014
Post by: Spriter on June 17, 2014, 00:42
Not having a go at Zlatan for not doing so, I just think it is more of a shame he didn't.

Some of the stories behind the Bosnia side though...wow.

Bosnia's qualifying record was decent though? Scored 30, conceded 6, won 8, drew 1, lost 1...pretty impressive. Still, I think they'll do well this year.

USA took the lead 29 seconds in, still holding on...oh wait, Ayew makes it 1-1.

The ref was poor but unfortunately the lads just didn't perform. Don't really blame Hodgson, bar not trying to get Terry out of international retirement I don't think there's anything else he could have done. Since we're note technically out I'll still back us but got France and back up just in case.

Considering the amount of stick he's consistently had for a few years you are definitely not the only one. He was actually decent last night, tried to get the team moving but he wasn't the main driver enough (which is what you want from a #10) and could have had a few more.

Plus if he had made the mistakes Gerrard did yesterday the press would have torn him to shreds last night.

Henderson and Cahill have been England's best players this tournament for sure (so far).

EDIT: Fair play to Costa Rica, they were class

Such a great game, was hoping Ghana would pull through (had them in a sweepstake 4 years back so they've been my African team since I guess?), John Boye at the back looks a very good player (bar the mistake for Dempsey's goal, whoops).

Disappointed at Nigeria not starting Ameobi again. Either way Bosnia will probably beat them.

Then Portugal v USA tomorrow, come on Ronaldo (sorry USA fans) =]

Algeria 4-2 South Korea. Cracking match, genuinely thought it'd be dull but apparently not.

Russia are close...to going out then.

I'm rooting for almost every team now. Bosnia / England are out and Japan are close, but Colombia / USA / Ghana / Ivory Coast / Belgium / France / Nigeria / Costa Rica / Netherlands / Chile / Brazil / Mexico / Croatia are all in still. At least someone I like will end up winning xD

Gonna be watching the Brazil game tonight and if the other one is on the red button, I'll nip that one on every now and then. Holland v Chile is my main match for the 5pm kick-offs, but I want the Socceroos to do well against Spain...so I'll keep tabs on that match too.

Argentina will get found out, their midfield is just so lacklustre at the moment. Put them against Germany, France, Colombia, etc. and they'll lose I reckon. Same for Belgium, look very disappointing.

So Suarez bit another player... third time he's done this haha

Prandelli's resigned from the Italy job and blamed trying to get the best out of Balotelli as one of the main reasons for failure... kinda understandable, should have gone with Insigne / Immobile / Cerci as an attacking three from the start.

Costa Rica v Greece in the next round... SMH

Ivory Coast always flop. Fair play to Greece.

Colombia look so good, James Rodriguez has been player of the tournament so far.

Title: Re: World Cup 2014
Post by: Spriter on June 25, 2014, 14:55
Could be longer than 10, in my opinion. Shame, Colombia v Uruguay would be even more interesting with Suarez - and Falcao if he wasn't injured.

France are looking good though, they should do well against Ecuador today, while Iran and Nigeria are going to battle for 2nd in their group...haha France v Iran in the last 16 would be funny.

USA can still finish top of their group, even if they'd have to beat Germany to do so. USA v Russia / Algeria would be fun for a last 16 match...

Chiellini was the one who got bit. Apparently he's apologised to try and reduce the sentence so that he has more of a chance of forcing a move to Barcelona but it's just rumours atm =P

so annoyed that Argentina squeezed through earlier and it's a shame they get one of Belgium or USA, what makes it worse is that its France v Germany and the winner of that will probably play Colombia (I'd be surprised if Colombia didn't beat Brazil based on the tournament so far) =[

Tim Howard went super saiyan to save some of those. Too bad we lost 2-1. Still, with the U.S. you never wanted to say die. They fought the whole 120 minutes. Nice job guys.

Klinsmann's project at USA will be the real deal hopefully. It's actually inspiring what he's trying to achieve. American mentality towards most things >>>>>>>>> ours =[

Well GL, England's time will come eventually. Still, Howard's 16 saves are most in a World Cup match since 1966.

That is if England actually get better and the media stop stomping on them.

Really wanted the USA, Howard was absolutely mental.

Looked on Twitter and #ThingsTimHowardCouldSave is brilliant. Don't know who's better, him or Ochoa.

There's going to be a new meme for Howard now. It's going to be everywhere. We need Howard next World Cup, unless he retires before or someone else becomes better. Still, that was amazing.

He'll be like, 45 next time around, he'll most likely be retired by then.

Just remembered, Belgium had 39 attempts on goal last night :o

Which is sad, looks like we'll need some standouts in the MLS or wherever to find a new goalie, but hey, we've got 4 years.

Howard; Ochoa's somewhat of a liability.

We need Howard next World Cup, unless he retires before or someone else becomes better. Still, that was amazing.

Guzan's a very good backup, there's no worry if Howard retires.

Which is sad, looks like we'll need some standouts in the MLS or wherever to find a new goalie, but hey, we've got 4 years.

Yedlin and Green (granted he doesn't play in the MLS) should become v good players by then. Plus in general football is growing in the USA, Klinsmann should get a lot of credit for what he's doing.

There are just more good players in other leagues because the teams have more money.

^What's wrong with the MLS? I don't know much about it, so please tell me.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, I just said that it'll hopefully start to grow and improve. It's already come a long way but there's plenty of work to be done. Plus it doesn't really compare to the major leagues in Europe. It's not just down to money (there are salary caps in MLS I believe though) but the talent levels coming through aren't as good atm because more kids are going to play NFL or basketball or baseball atm. Plus coaching at a junior level in the USA isn't that great yet. That's what Klinsmann's trying to change, he's trying to get children to pick it up quicker and to get better coaching for it. It's admirable really.

^Ok, thanks for telling me. I've had people tell me i'd be good at soccer if I conditioned myself for it. I played keeper for a bit one day in gym, some of the saves I made we crazy. I hope Klinsmann accomplishes what he's trying to do, it's admirable like you said.

Ronaldo should have scored 4 goals v Ghana, shame. At least he can rest up and be fully fit for the next season.

He's carrying that team. At least Argentina have more than just Messi.

(there are salary caps in MLS I believe though)

Yes, there are. Same for the NHL. It's an overall salary cap rather than per player. They don't move players in the same way. They have the trade system so no one gets sold for £85m

He was carrying it whilst injured too and the other good players (Moutinho especially) were so underwhelming.

Yeah all American sports have salary caps as far as I know, wasn't 100% sure on MLS though, need to look into it more

Colombia doing so well so far isn't really a fairytale, everyone (at least should have) expected them to do well. Costa Rica's the fairytale of this World Cup so far

^From what i've heard, Brazil has a 72% chance to win, so the odds aren't in Columbia's favor. Then again, it's how you play, not how the odds are.

I'd expect Colombia to win on the basis that they've been the most impressive team in the World Cup so far but home advantage and rising to the occasion could favour Brazil. It's very hard to say which team wins at this point unless there's a clear gap in abilities between the teams due to the pressure involved, it's all about which side teams up the most.

I'm hoping that Brazil can get through their next match against Germany without Neymar.

Injuring Neymar was Columbia's way of saying "we can't win so you can't either!"
That just isn't fair!

blame the ref, he didn't have a handle on the game
plus Colombia were definitely still in it so that is a very harsh accusation
Title: Re: World Cup 2014

Costa Rica doing really well to keep it 0-0, Dutch free-kick hitting the post is about as close as they've come to conceding.

It's also harsh to even suggest that Colombia only injured Neymar to get revenge. And the player who "kneed" (because kneed sounds like it was intentional) Neymar has come out and apologised anyways, so I don't know how one can accuse the injury of being an intentionally inflicted injury :/

OFF THE LINE! Go Costa Rica! Extra time now, it's going to be a long 30 minutes for Costa Rica and the dutch.

Krul was such an arse there, coming up to the penalty takers before their pens and saying something. Doubt it was anything positive either.

Krul ending for Costa Rica though, such a shame. They've done fantastic to get to the quarters.

Tbf it's all mind games, the penalty takers could easily do the same to the goalkeeper. It's a bit of gamesmanship but it happens, you'll do whatever it takes to win.

cheeky =P

but yeah I really hope they give the Golden Ball to James Rodriguez but I expect it'll go to Lahm / Muller (based on if Muller scores in the final) or Messi depending on which team wins

GERMANY WIN

Very powerful as well that the first two players in the German national side who were born in Unified Germany combined for the goal.

Messi got the golden ball? What an absolute disgrace. A list of players more deserving than Messi:

- James Rodriguez
- Manuel Neuer
- Philip Lahm
- Thomas Mueller
- Mat Hummels
- Javier Mascherano
- Arjen Robben

disgusting, absolutely disgusting

Ricardo Rodriguez of Switzerland should have got the young player of the tournament ahead of Pogba too smh
