Title: Best Cult Classic Games
Post by: Lord Raven on May 08, 2013, 05:41
I think most of you gamers know what a Cult Classic is but for all of you fledglings I will explain what a Cult Classic is.

A Cult Classic is a game that was not heavily advertised and is relatively unknown, but has a small and dedicated following and is otherwise a quality game.

So let us speak about such games.  My favorite of the bunch are the Shadow Hearts series and the Drakengard series.

I'd have to say TWEWY and possibly Ace Attorney at a stretch. Maybe Bloodrayne too?

Other examples off the top of my head that I'm not sure about: Oddworld, Jet Set Radio Future, Earthbound/Mother II, Space Channel 5, maybe the Touhou games.

It probably doesn't
But oh well thats mine xD

I'm not sure if it counts (although I certainly don't know many people who have played it), but I loved Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. It was a seriously awesome game. Also, yeah, as Turner said, Ace Attorney and TWEWY.

I don't know if TWEWY is a cult classic game, because you can go on most internet forums and they will know what those games are.  Same with Ace Attorney, especially if I'm not listing Fire Emblem games out the ass here.  PMD is most definitely not a cult classic game.

If you look at my examples, most people you talk to even on these forums have not heard of either or at least heard vaguely about it and don't know the details.  All three shadow hearts games together with Koudelka did not break 1 million in sales nationwide, same with the three Drakengard games.  I highly doubt that Ace Attorney and TWEWY are the same way.

Fair point. But then, outside the internet, not that many people have played them.

A sales number that breaks a million or even 800K is far more than many of the other series listed on this page.

Sorry, I haven't played many cult classics.

team fortress 2! it's known to a certain extent but it's not advertised at all on tv or online to my knowledge.

Team Fortress 2? The hell is that?

literally the best first person shooter ever. and no, it's not all 'u gt 2 shot guy in faec' tactic
there's 9 classes that you get to chose from, which differ from what weapons you use (like a rocket launcher, scatter gun, flame thrower, sentry gun, ect.), your speed, and basically the way you play, and you have to work as a team to capture control points and other things depending on what game mode you play. that's just a really brief description. it's really fun, and best of all, free! but you have to download steam first, which is what all pc gamers use to buy games and play them.
it's goofy as hell. you cannot take it seriously at all, and if you do, you're playing it wrong. plus my icon is one of the classes, which is spy :u

I picked up this rare NES game called Super Mario Bros. a few days ago, no idea what they were thinking with that one.

I like VVVVVV and to an extent, Cave Story, though Cave Story is soooo much better, I dunno if it counts, since I'm not doing research on these things.

Super Mario Bros is not a cult classic

tvtropes seems to agree TWEWY and Ace Attorney are cult classics. It can't really be a classic if it isn't known to some extent, otherwise you're just looking for unknown games which are good. Buying AA nowadays is hard, nowhere seems to stock the game at all, same with TWEWY, they have a lot of fanart but they're not all that well known.

Ace Attorney (especially Investigations) and TWEWY were pains in the ass to buy. When I finally found TWEWY, it was in a shop called CEX, and it was only the second copy they had ever had in stock.

I think TVTropes is okay to read at times (too much gushing and they exaggerate things a lot), but I don't consider it that reliable.  Having that said, you do have a point, but I just find it a little bit odd to consider these Cult Classic games considering the amount of gushing the general internet populace does over these particular games.

I could make the pricing on amazon argument and how TWEWY is like 15 bucks and SH1/2 cost generally big bucks (SH2 can be 20 dollars but the fact remains that there are people selling it for 50+ dollars and there are people who are willing to bite), but then you remember Drakengard is terrible and there were some people who were selling it for less than the cost of shipping.  Hmm.

I would expect such petty and low-quality sarcasm from a newbie, but not from you.

Fair enough, I wouldn't cite TVTropes as a definitive source by any means though I do think that now games WILL get a decent amount of exposure no matter who's interested (Thanks to various websites keeping track of almost every release and the general surge in popularity of games over time) the cult classic goalposts will have to be moved slightly wider for the newer titles.

It was an obvious joke, why would I list any Mario game as a cult classic, least of all the first Super Mario Bros? >_>

What is Super Mario Bros.?

I think it's this really obscure game where you play as some Italian guy, and you have to kill mushrooms and turtles and stuff. It sounds pretty stupid to me.

Cult games? Definitely Oddworld. Not gonna lie, Abe's Odyssey is one of the best games I have ever played. Mostly because it was so obscure it stuck with me from a young age.

Also the .hack// series. GU not so much, but the original quadrilogy is amazing, if increasingly difficult to get hold of. And Okami. Because Amaterasu.

Let me put this in perspective.  Perception is reality and hindsight is 20/15 aside, at the time it came off as making a mockery of this thread (considering the posts before you actually taking the piss out of it or were just generally useless).  In retrospect, it wasn't close to bad at all, but the context allowed too much for a negative interpretation.  I do apologize.

Yeah.  My main reason is I feel like Fire Emblem would be among those games you have listed but something in me really doesn't consider it among a Cult Classic.  I guess Super Smash Brothers is to blame for that.

I'm also looking at some of the game I've listed and while there are definitely Fire Emblem forums and Square Enix forums and many many forums that will gush on and ON about TWEWY and Ace Attorney, there is no Shadow Hearts fandom.  There is no Drakengard fandom.  There are merely like 5 posters at best per forum that have heard of these games, and even then they've taken a backseat simply because it's hard to be so hyped about a game almost no one owns or talks about.  Especially a game whose first game came out in Japan literally the week after Final Fantasy X was first released.

The fact that there is a Fire Emblem forum in existence that is booming with activity, and the other fact that there used to be 3 huge FE forums before the 2008-2013 Western drought in FE game releases really speaks much about the "cult classic" situation of FE.  And the fact is, when TWEWY came out, there were threads on almost every forum about this game and the gamefaqs/gamespot were surging with activity.  But do you even recall the time any of some other games were released?  Yeah, you can still call it a Cult Classic on the grounds that the general populace will not know of the game, so idk maybe I'm just picky.

Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity in Japan) is a good one btw, it's a JRPG but the characters equip and customize guns and it's mostly in real time.  Most of the time, you don't really directly do damage either; you use your guns to do chip damage before you shoot actual bullets at enemies, because the moment you break their armor is when you start to really do a load of damage.

Anyone play Shenmue? I'd consider that a cult classic. I maintain it is THE best game ever made.

Its wonderful and it still holds up today. :]

Going to give the PSP some love and say LocoRoco 2 and Patapon. Both have a decent following even if no one seems to have heard of them (in the UK at least).

Does.. Does Okami count? Because god, that was a LOVELY game. It did not get the attention it deserved at all.

Me and my brother also loved Blinx to death - both 1 and 2 were AMAZING D8 I can see why it would never have achieved much popularity, but it's a shame, because it was such good fun. It had a really good 2player too :3

Yes it does. It's freakin' Amaterasu!

Also to a lesser extent Okamiden, but I feel it hasnt been around long enough yet.

EEEEEEEEEEEEE DAT OKAMI. And huzzah for a fellow fan! It was just beautiful, but I guess I can see what killed it - the combat system... Urg. Still, a properly amazing game <3

Dynasty Warriors! Great for stress relief. It's so easy and has so little plot that you just don't have to concentrate to play it.

I also really enjoyed Okami. The Playstation version over the Wii version, though. Funnily enough, I found drawing with the Wiimote really difficult.

^ I must have spent hours on Dynasty Warriors, back when the PS2 was King. :]

Theme Hospital. C:
Just restored my love for this game. It is an absolute classic and still holds up today. The whole game is beautiful and there is nothing better than when your 9 year old self realises what auto-autopsy does...I really didn't think about the name of it until I'd sent thousands of people to their doom. I don't think anybody has mentioned Deadly Premonition yet, Its silly but honestly amazing.

More well known ones would be Ace Attorney and Oddworld, Im not sure If Persona is classed as one anymore with the release of Persona 4 the animation and Persona 4 arena, its started to get more well known.

I need to actually buy and play Okami, I've heard far too many good things about it.

Another Code, I would say.  One of the first games to come out on the DS .  Aaaaahh, memories.

I'd also say Vampire: The Masquerade.  The game is so awesome and goofy.  Maybe Lost in Blue and Urbz, if they count.
