Title: What are you reading?
Post by: Trainer Dave on November 14, 2008, 21:01
Well look at this; a new board!

I'm just wondering what everyone else is currently reading through?

Currently i've got 'The World According to Clarkson' out of the Library. It's pretty good, although he does carry on a bit...

...since not every book needs it's own topic.

Anyone else?

The only books I have got are Clarkson ones, but the only things I read are text messages, teletext and writing on websites and stuff at school.

Inkheart series.

They aren't that bad, just in some parts the book rambles on and on and it repeats stuff. Tons of stuff. >.< I'm on the third one, Inkdeath, and I only have like 200 more pages and I'm finished. ^.^

After finishing Inkdeath, I've just started re-reading the Harry Potter series.

I'm also re-reading The Catcher In The Rye ready for English mocks, The Cruicible for Drama and The Time Traveller's Wife.

I'm gonna re-read the Old Kingdom trilogy when I'm done with those, and my lovely Chemistry revision guide. It makes for some really good bedtime reading, it truly does.

I am still reading The Da Vinci code by Dan Brown after I started it months ago. I just haven't had time to finish it.

And the other day I started to read Diving In by Kate Cann. I borrowed it from a friend a while ago so thought I should probably read it and give it back xP

I've just finished re-reading the last 20/30 pages of Interview With the Vampire, which is by Anne Rice, so I'm about to go onto the following (in order);

The Vampire Lestat - Anne Rice.
Queen of the Damned - Anne Rice.

Once I've finished reading them, I'm probably going to finish reading "DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons", both by Dan Brown, and then see what I get for my birthday. I'm interested in getting Chris Jericho's (wrestler) book, A Lions Tale iirc, but that's the only book I can think of at the moment.

I wouldn't mind reading "The Damned United" which is to do with Brian Clough's 44 days as Leeds United manager, of which is actually getting made into a film.

Doubt I'll finsh them all though, Interview with the Vampire was the first book I'd completely read, not counting wrestler books because I find myself more motivated to read them, since the Harry Potter series.. =/

Note that there was no intention of copying another topic. There wasn't another one on this board, so I made one. O_O

Hmm... everyone seems to love Dan Brown's work. I read The Da-Vinci Code, and it was fairly good, heh. Fuss.

After a bit I find it hard to refer to the book by it's title, and use the main characters name for it ^-^ The Scarlet letter became Hester, Great Expectations became Pip, and Gulliver's Travels is...well, Gulliver.

BELLA AND EDWARD GET MARRIED? its getting too real.

I really hope they don't, because I was planning on reading that series, and that would mean yet another thing spoiled. I've been avoiding seeing things to do with it, yet people are still spoiling it without warning =/

We read the first act of 'Death of a Salesmen' and I hated it to tears. All it is, is a crazy old man who keeps living in the past, and everyone feeling bummed because they can't live up to someone elses expectations.

I see enough of that on the bus, why would I want to read about it in class?

I've head to read about Huck. It wasn't such a bad book, but it gets banned in alot of school for using the N word in refering to black people.

I also discovered that the last part of the book actually wasn't what Twain intented it to be, but he had been writing this for so long he either got sick of it and just wanted to end it/had to meet a deadline and was pressured to finish it.

I'de like to know his orginal ending...It was annoying that Stupid Tom Sawyer showed up, and made poor Huck jump through all those hoops, and Jim suffered even worse! It was majorly out of character for Huck to start taking orders from Tom, expically since he had been on his own for so long. Very disapointing ending it was.

I can't understand it myself. I dunno, we havn't read any past ACT 1, and it's a two act play...but I can't understand the guy, Willy. I mean, he was just constantly trying to live up to someone elses expectations of him. If he could just get over the facxt that he's not his brother, and doesn't have to live up to his ideals, then he'd be much better off. Same with both of his kids (Biff and...Happy?) they're both torn between doing what their fatehr expects of them, and doing what makes them happy. Well, Biff anyways, Happy just gets upset and feels he has to prove himself to everyone...

Yeah, I've never been one for proving my worth. If I'm happy, then I don't care what other people think, which is what's annoying me about this play.

I loved Death of a Salesman <3 Apart from Creative Writing, it's been my favourite coursework assignment so far in English. The Crucible is the one set in Salem during the witch hunts and whatnot. A View From A Bridge is a lovely play by Miller as well. Much better than the Catcher in the Rye, IMO. Which has nothing to do with either play, but still.

I'm reading three different books right now.  I'm reading Fahrenheit 451 (http://V), by Ray Bradbury, Ringworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld), by Larry Niven, and The Bible (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible), by various authors.

Yay Ringworld. And I recall Fahrenheit 451 is somewhere around this house, though I don't know what it's about. Is it any good?

'Mechanicum' by Graham McNeill. The 9th book in the series. And so far one of the best. They'll probably get to book 1093 before they manage to end the series.

Don't be so sure. The Wheel of Time was cut short at book 12 by the author's death, meaning he had to close the story there and the two other proposed prequels will not exist.

Currently I'm reading The Big Bad Wolf by James Patterson. Not the best book ever, but still very good. For X-mas I should be getting The Lake House by the same author, which judging by the previous book When The Wind Blows should be good, and I will also be getting Stealing Light by Gary Gibson and A Crown of Swords, Wheel of Time book 7 by Robert Jordan. I was also intending to get Fell by David Clement-Davies.

I also have alot of partially read books around. EVE: The Empyrean Age and two Anne McCaffrey books off the top of my head. Two by Peter F. Hamilton. Lucifer's Hammer and Moonseed I should get reading. Need to catch up on Broken Sky, Demonata,  and Artemis Fowl series (I know the most recent one is hiding in this house SOMEWHERE). Lion of Senet. What else is there ... A.I. Love You vol. 2 I'm not sure I finished, but I also have no idea where it is. I can probably come up with more if I go and look through my bookcase. If I hunt through the house I'll eventually come up with some more too. I still need to find Maximum Ride book 3 for re-reading.

Tl;dr, I read a lot. A helluva lot. But still not enough. While I'm on that point of not reading enough, I have two 1200-page A4 books with tiny text I should get on with also. Not text books either.

Angel Blood.
It's a really good book about a place called The Bin, where they sort of look after (more like treat like crap) children who have mutations and birth defficiances. The main character, called X-ray, has see through skin for example. Theres also a girl with hands growing out of her shoulders, but the 4 main characters are sort of unneducated so they thing they're wings. o.o
Now go buy it >o

We semi-finished Hamelt, she had us each read a scene from the remaining two acts, and perform them for the class (because she ran out of time in making us read it)

Well, I win. Spoilers down below if you havn't read/watched the play yet~

I bet Hamlet died in the end. He did. Way to go Shakespeare, sticking to the same plot of killing off your main characters to end the story. I never even saw it comming. Only this time, you decided to kill everyone, except for Horiato. It amused me, becuase I was complaining earlier that poor Horatio didn't get that big a part in the play. Turns out, he's the only one to survive it! Irony...

I was sad to see Rosencrantz go... I liked his funny name.

Given to me by a friend who thought I'd like it, as it's a bit odd.

It's "Let the Right One In" by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
I'm reading it in English, ocourse.

It's slightly twisted.
But intriguing.

^I'm sorry...MacBeth can drone on forever...

Now I'm reading Catch 22, since I have to read books from a list my teacher gave me, then write up a test on them that no one will ever use...I have to say, Catch 22 is amusing, much different then all those other horrible war books they've forced me to read ^-^ The characters more or less just keep spinning themselves around in a circle, in both their speach and actions, which explains the books Title, Catch 22.

I'm in the process of reading two books: Lord of the Flies, and Inkspell.

Lord of the Flies is something I have to read for school, but honestly I really like it - it's very deep and has a lot of underlying meanings that I find interesting.

Inkspell is good all the same though (it's the sequel to Inkheart).

And Clarke as in Gillian Clarke? Not yet, but we should be doing her after Heaney, although this sounds very rude.

It's totally unknown and things, but it's absolutely amazing.
It's about these kids who have like, birth defficiences, like one of them was born with only 1 layer of skin, one of them has wings, and one of them doesnt have eyes. Basically is revolves around them trying to escape from the asylum that they have been inprisoned in to icolate them from society. o.o

Maximum Ride is about these kids who were experimented on and given wings and avian bones.. and they often have problems, like one is blind (and there are other failed experiments mentioned, can't remember specifics though).. and a group of them try to escape the laboratories in which they were made and imprisoned xD

Trust me, it gets depressing real fast. Steinbeck I enjoy, because he writes in a language that's understandable, but he's not one for cheery happy books...

Utack's side note: If you ever have to do a report on a book where you need to quote other's reviews, Pick 'Grapes of Wrath'. Do not pick 'In Dubious Battle' by Steinbeck, no one cares much about it...even though it's just as interesting a read imo...='(

I was in the middle of New Moon a while ago, but it got a little boring, then my oldest sister got into twilight and she read the first book in like a day so I was trying to hurry up and read it so she could have it, but I didn't do it fast enough so she just took it. =p

Once I finish the twilight series I'll go back to the Inheritance Trilogy, I got bored at the beginning of Brisingr.

Even though I'm no Edward fan, I do admit that the books are a wee bit boring without him. New Moon is an odd one, Bella never shuts up about how much pain she's in. >_____>

But once you get around to chapters 13-16 or so, it gets a little better.

I'm currently readin Alan Carr's book.
It's pretty funny, but not the funny you see when he's on the T.V, dunno whether it's a good thing or bad though, fans could be disappointed, but then again, it would be boring if he just did the same things as he did on T.V.
Anyway I'll read furthe ron and see how it goes from there.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde.

Eh...3 characters. The main character who is much to eaisly influenced, the first side character who so far hasn't done anything but watch the main character become corrupt and painted, and the second side character who'se helping the main character become corrupted.

...Oh, and a bunch of Paradoxes. ...Ungh...At least it's more or less easy to understand, as long as you don't try to understand any of it.

^(Yes, that's a Paradox, or somthing close enough to it. The whole book is more or less like that)

Cold Knap Lake! <3

I love the last two stanzas to that.. the whole metaphor of the lake as memory, beautiful.
Title: Re: What are you reading?
Post by: Webby2 on March 30, 2009, 22:31
^ You like it? I thought it was a bit crap, and it tried to represent too many things, making the lake resemble a state of confusion in my eyes. Although I did find a balance of love and hate towards the lake, and how it can be good and bad. Shame about the girl though in the poem, things go from bad to worse for her.

One thing I like about it though is how it compares with Heaney poems as they both are based on memory, and how they react towards the thought of it, as well as when it happened at that time.

Panic by Jeff Abbott

Quote from: Blurb on the back of my book
Things are going well for young filmmaker Evan Casheer - until he receives an urgent phone call from his mother, summoning him home. He arrives to find her brutally murdered body on the kitchen floor and a hitman lying in wait for him. It is then he realises his whole life has been a lie. His parents are not who he thought they were, his girlfriend is not who he thought she was, his entire existance has been an ingeniously constructed sham. Evan's only hope for suvivial is to discover the truth behind his past.

Bought this at the Smiths in Waterloo when I was waiting for a train back home earlier today.

I've just finished Slaughterhouse 5. Gotta admit, I can't tell up from down in that book...We more or less end at the beginning, and find the ending halfway through, if we were to look at it Chronologically...But then again it's all about Time and such, so I guess it's structed that way on purpose...

Was browsing charity shops for something new to read and I came across Postcards From No Man's Land by Aidan Chambers. I'm two chapters in so far. It has one of those awkward writing styles that takes a chapter or two to get into, has that typical "each chapter is narrated by a different character telling their own story" style, and the descriptions have a few gems (such as the waiters "fluttering in and out of canopied cafés like birds from a nesting box) but as soon as the narrator starts moving they get kinda hard to follow. I had to really concentrate to figure out what was going on.

Not to mention the alarming description of the girl playing bongoes in the plein.. -shudders- ;;

I think the odd words of Dutch thrown in are integrated quite well though, it's usually fairly obvious what they mean, without the author resorting to pasting dictionary definitions in the middle of the page like Markus Zusak does in The Book Thief xD

Georde R.R. Martin's "A Clash of Kings", from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

Purely epic. It's like... enjoyable Tolkien. Okay, I'm half-joking, I found the second book of LotR a colossal bore, but I know I'm part of a distinct minority, don't roast me. =P

Ha ha, poor you, Duffy and Armitage aren't as good as Heaney and Clarke. They would so kick their ass in a tag team match, you wouldn't bet against them =P

Too many poems though for my liking, dare I say it... I want Of Mice And Men back! O_O

Haha, I remember the wonderful speedreading of set texts before English exams.. I almost miss it. Almost P: I actually only read half of Frankenstein before my AS exam, which was.. probably a bad idea, but there y'go xD;

Seriously, there's that much junk to write about in that book that you don't NEED to read it all to sit an exam on it.

They've gone and changed A-level English now.. so you don't get the text IN the exam. You're supposed to learn it all D: I find that ridiculous.. very glad I sat it the year before that changed. Don't make it any more of a memory test than it already is! :c

Good look, you GCSE'ers, for tomorrow ^_^

I could have read that book and done an exam on it for Philosophy... but it's quite big and Plato's stuff is quite deep. We went with Russell's "Problems of Philosophy" instead, but I think I may try and read The Republic if I chance because I want to see how much Plato actually set in stone for us (Plato was one of the major Philosophers of his era and most of his work is the foundation of current philosophical debate).

First I read Glass Houses by Rachel Caine, then The Host by Stephenie Meyer, then Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman, then Confessions Of A Shopoholic by Sophie Kinsella. I managed to leave the last book by the pool though =[

the host? i wanted to read that. is it good?

me? read? it's the summer! i don't have to read for another six days! that's when school starts, so that's when i have to start thinking!

I found it to be a bit confusing at first, but then I got into it and thought it was pretty good. It was also a really addictive book, so I ended up finishing it within days xP

The next book I'm going to read will be The Dead Girl's Dance by Rachel Caine, I think =]

Currently reading a book by Richard Wilson - "Can't be Arsed (101 things not to do before you die)."

207 pages of "why go to machu picchu, it's too far, there are too many tourists and you can see lots of pictures of it [minus dozens of backpackers]" and "don't listen to [album], there are only a few decent tracks on it anyway and it's popular because people buy it and forget they own it so buy it again, thus rendering its status as a classic."

I know for a fact that you all will think that the list i am about to type is Stupidly long, and that i will probably over-load my brain soon because i shouldn't be reading so many books at once.

Books I'm Currently Reading:
Blood Beast by Darren Shan
Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire by J.K.Rowling
Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
JPOD by Douglas Coupland
IT by Stephen King
Demon Seed by Dean Koontz

Vanishing Act by Jodi Picoult
SoulMaster by Pete Sides

I would be more than happy to recomend any of these books to everyone here at PKMN.NET, Except the last book on the list for other reasons.

I've replaced the Jodi Picoult book i finished with another one.

The Book thief by Markus Zusak

Difficult book to get into, I found, a bit like wading through treacle at times.. but I very much enjoyed it overall (: good choice.

I'm reading two books atm:
Michelle Paver's Ghost Hunter, which is fantastic right up until the big battle scene at the end where I totally lost track of what was going on O.o; didn't seem all that dramatic really, more sort of clumsy and a flukey win.. and I thought it was a real shame we didn't see ANY proper spirit walking in this book D: it's such an interesting concept.

and Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene, so that I have something to flesh out my university application with if I do Biochem P: I slugged through the preface and then realised I couldn't tell you a thing about what it said, but the book itself is much easier-going and fascinating so far, though I'm only a couple of chapters in. I'm also hoping to find some sort of reason to like the author in the book, after The God Delusion became so fashionable among "researched" religion-bashers, which has made me subonciously dislike Dawkins xD;

and Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene, so that I have something to flesh out my university application with if I do Biochem P:

^5 Great minds think alike.

I'm not much of a reader, but needed something to do during my lunch breaks at the zoo so I bought that book on recommendation of my friend and my biology tutor. I haven't reached the end yet... it's actually quite dull and repetative at some points, which led me to skim read half of each chapter... and I just sort of lost interest. Must finish it though at some stage. It is a very interesting book when he isn't repeating what he's explained infinate times already in previous chapters.

^ I find that xD knowing that something exciting is going to happen and wondering if you've read it or if there's something better to come.. or knowing that something will happen to somebody, and trying to pick up on hints of who it might be. I find that in films of books, too, I look out for clues for what I already know is coming!

Being ill has given me masses of reading time, so I've ploughed a little further on with The Selfish Gene.. but I dunno if I'll finish it before it needs to go back to the library, it really hasn't grabbed me. Finished Fermat's Last Theorem by Simon Singh, which I actually did find very interesting. And now I'm taking a break from my study books to read Syren, part of the Septimus Heap series <3 I love these books, they're so wonderfully innocent. And then I'll pick up Genome - The Autobiography of a Species by Matt Ridley, possibly along with The Crossing of Ingo. Hurray mermaids!

Plus I also want to reread the Fire Within series before laying my paws on Dark Fire, so I can decide whether to buy it or just borrow it. Might borrow it anyway and buy it if I like it enough. I love school libraries <3

I don't know the exact title but it's a Masters Degree level textbook on Physics.
I'll write you some of it;
Quote
...characterized by exactly zero electrical resistance and the exclusion of the interior magnetic field (the Meissner effect). It was discovered by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911. Like ferromagnetism and atomic spectral lines, superconductivity is a quantum mechanical phenomenon. It cannot be understood simply as the idealization of "perfect conductivity" in classical physics.
In superconducting materials, the characteristics of superconductivity appear when the temperature T is lowered below a critical temperature Tc. The value of this critical temperature varies from material to material. Conventional superconductors usually have critical temperatures ranging from around 20 K to less than 1 K. Solid mercury, for example, has a critical temperature of 4.2 K. As of 2001, the highest critical temperature found for a conventional superconductor is 39 K for magnesium diboride (MgB2), although this material displays enough exotic properties that there is doubt about classifying it as a "conventional" superconductor. Cuprate superconductors can have much higher critical temperatures: YBa2Cu3O7, one of the first cuprate superconductors to be discovered, has a critical temperature of 92 K...

oh yes.

Loved that book. I really like how the author makes you hate the main character (for what he does as a kid) and then how you become more and more attached to him as the book goes on. Apparently there's a sort of...'spin off' called A Thousand Suns or something, and it centres around some random character from The Kite Runner (I think it's the orphanage bloke?) that I'm yet to read.

Actually, if you read it in original Japanese (like I did) the story with that older stalker woman is pretty interesting in terms of how the guy talks.

Ooh, lovely stuff (you being able to read Japanese, not the older stalker woman). Ya talking about the guy who's constantly using the polite form of words in conversation with the woman, right?

Yup. Because the gap between colloquial (co-lol-quial, amirite?) and formal language is much smaller in English than it is in Japanese, it's a lot more interesting.

Also reading now; Hayate No Gotoku. At a first glance it seems like it would be my perfect sort of manga, but the storyline is too heavy for my likings.

Finished Nation (ace), and that Jefferey Deaver book that I-can't-remember-the-name-of-because-I-didn't-enjoy-it-at-all.

Now, I'm reading a book called The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Life, by Richard Dawkins. It's a book that takes you on a backwards journey of four billion years with us, humans as the pilgrams. We are travelling though time to seek out our ancestors. Simultaneously every other living creature is setting off on it's own journey with the same mission. Each pilgrim tells its tale along the way and covers the processes involved in the unfolding of life on Earth.

If you're a creationist, I would think it's best to give this one a miss :P

Well to be honest I'm not reading as much as I used to, which is kinda sad because I'm a big reader... No money though, so no new books and I don't re-read books often.

Just finished 'The Summer I turned Pretty' I liked it a lot and I would recommend it but its not out yet... So I can't lol.

Re-reading (Yus re-reading) Russell Brand: My Booky Wook for like the tenth time, I love this book <3.

I want to finish Brisingr but I got it for my 11th or 12th birthday and I gave up on it, not because its boring but because I wanted to finish the [first] Warrior Cat series; which I did... Two years ago.

Started the House of Night Series and I finished the first book in a day, but as I have no money I can't get the rest of the books =/.

I'm reading Eoin Colfer too, reading Airman. I'm currently Evil At Heart by Chelsea Cain. It's the third book in the Gretchen Lowell serial killer series. The first two were really good reads, and this was a steal at £3.76 lol.. gogo Tesco. Anyway, Gretchen is a beautiful, smart, evil woman who has admitted to killing over 200 people. The main protagonist throughout the book is Archie Sheridan, a detective who is the head of the task force looking for her (she escaped from the police in the last book...) Archie has spent the last few months in the city's psychiatric hospital, battling with his addiction to painkillers, and his strange obsession with Gretchen, the woman who tortured him. It's stockholm syndrome taken to the extreme..

anyway, I definitely recommend these books, the first is called Heart Sick and the second Sweet Heart. You should read them in that order ;D

Ugh, I'm juggling quite a bit of stuff, some of it for school, some of it personal.

For English, I'm reading 1984. Pretty interesting stuff, with the communism and all. Still not getting into any developing plot yet though... hmmm

For Theatre Arts, if you count it, the script for "12 Angry Men." The advanced theatre class is putting it on and I'm one of the twelve angry men, arguably the angriest. Pretty damn good script, but it's gonna be a pain to perform. It's just three big acts, I never get to go offstage for a break or anything.

And then out of my own volition, I'm trying to read "Finnegans Wake" by James Joyce. It's probably my favorite book of all time, reading it aloud with friends was hilarious enough for me to actually willingly buy a book. I know.

I really enjoy the style in which the book is written, a controversial topic seen through the eyes of two young children. I've just finished The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruin Zafon. Absolutely amazing author, he's moved quite high in my opinion of him. I read The Angel's Game first, which was amazing, and I also read The Prince of Mist; however, this last book was written when he was much younger, and for children, and feels like a crappy fanfic compared to his full blown novels. It's still pretty good, but there are themes from Prince of Mist that are prevelant in the other two books, the latter of which are set in mid-1900 Barcelona. They're kind of related, set in the same place with a few characters that are in both books, but they're gripping, and beautiful to read. I love his sky imagery. <3

The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K Lee. I'm not liking the switch between two different stories, and although her writing style is interesting, it's boring to read.  I'm usually interested in novels based on characters living in Japan and China, but the whole premise of the novel just rubs off as China being a randomly chosen location for English characters. :\

book fair yesterday. not as good a haul as the first time, only like 20 or so books. one of them is a gold leaf leather bound copy of anna karenina for only $9, crime and punishment was there aswell in the same set but was $20, decided against it since i already have two copies. and it's not exactly his dostoyevsky's best work, ehhhhh notes from the underground > c&p

anyway.
so i'm reading "what is to be done?" by lenin & "the lion the witch and the wardrobe" by c.s. lewis for school, isn't that a nice combo.

It always rather bothered me how similar that book is to The Sight, by the same author.. it's like he wrote the same story twice, just changing from deer characters in one book to wolves in the other.

I'm still reading Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.. uni has gobbled up my reading time =[

I want to read Fallen Leaves because it's meant to be more of an autobiography than Chinese Cinderella, which was aimed more at teenagers so it's brief and focuses on her childhood, I think Fallen Leaves covers her later life. I actually bought another of her books today, Watching The Tree, along with some of the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella and a book called Shanghai Baby.

I'm currently reading Horus Rising, part of the Horus Heresy series of books based in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

I'm a huge sci-fi buff and have read through Asimov to Clarke to Heinlein... Dan Abnett (the author of this book) isn't up there with the greats but it is a genuinely cintelating tale. It plots the course of the great human empire at the peak of it's ventures into space and then lets you ride the spiral into the decay ridden vestiges that make up current Warhammer 40k lore.

I'd give the book a 8/10 on the Blyton Scale & the author a 7/10.

i love the Iliad! read it like 3 times through! i am a fan of the classics.

right now i am reading The Diving Bell and The Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby
the author had Locked-in Syndrome when he dictated his words for the book to an assistant, only communicating by blinking hie left eye lid, as it was all he had control over after having a massive stroke.

it is a very quick and easy read and definitely worth a read. I strongly recommend it!

not as gripped by the plot as I could be, but the language and the characters and the detail and the way that the world is put together are absolutely lovely

I bought a George Mann book recommended in xhanatos's thread on that premise alone, aharhar

though first I think I'll read the Mo Hayder book that's sat there looking at me
once I've finished this
I can't really read two books at once: I end up with a very confused idea of the plots
what is brainpower?

Currently reading Duma Key by Stephen King c: I'm pretty sure I'm reading the less-gripping moment, but if it follows the way Carriewas written, then I am absolutely going to love this book.

There's another book that I've got on the printer, which I've been forced upon by my friend. It's called The Red Pyramid, but I don't know the author of it xD

Aaaand there's a book in my school library which I'd love to take out. Forgotten the title, though. :v

My dad just bought that book, and I'm hoping to read it after he reads it c: Really hoping it is an amazing book! <3

Just finished Duma Key after being put off from the long beginning for a good season or so. Awesome book when it picks up the pace, especially after you piece the various things in the beginning together and woah.

Going back to Insomnia. Another long beginning which I'd been put off from (again), but for longer. After reading Duma Key, I'm pretty sure that the lengthiness will be worth it c:

I'm reading The Atrocity Files by Charles Stross. It's a very peculiar book; think James Bond/Harry Potter/Geeks. It's a bizarre mix, but it works. The protagonist has just gone through a portal and entered some dystopian sister universe where the Nazis won; the moon has a laser-imprinted image of Hitler burned into its surface. Awesome.

I'm finding it quite heavy going though. I'm getting the magic references, but the computery mathematical stuff is just too much :<

Reading Monument by Ian Graham atm. It's.. interesting. It's a fantasy novel, with the gimmick being that the "protagonist" is an arse. Ballas is an alcoholic, a thief, a thug, a womaniser, and the only way he knows to repay somebody saving his life is to steal from them.

Surprisingly, I was quite enjoying it. The descriptions are pretty good, some original stuff in there, and while I have no sympathy for Ballas at all and he makes me cringe on a frequent basis (vomit and thoughts of prostitutes every other sentence), it was still interesting and I wanted to know what happened.

But then there was this grim execution scene out of nowhere and it was like.. man I do not want to read this! And now I have very little desire to carry on reading because it made me feel ill (yeahh I'm pretty squeamish) and, while I want to find out the rest of the story, it isn't worth reading the nasty bits for. Shame!

just finished "This Book Is Full Of Spiders" by David Wong

i've been in a no-reading slump lately (every so often reading just ends up being a labour of love and its more labour than love most of the times) so its' been good that i've been able to actually read a book recently hhahhaha

i'm hoping it'll remind me about reading?? like the book was ok but it sort of petered out a little at the end and i was hoping it'd explain more stuff instead of doing like books do and thinking that ambiguity is always good when in fact it sort of looks a bit lazy sometimes

but those are my only criticisms of the book? its an alright thriller zombie style book if you want an easy casual read that makes you laugh every so often i really enjoyed it
like you get the feeling that you walked in mid-conversation a lot and i haven't read John Dies At The End yet so i might be missing stuff out but yeah

Reading the first book of the Mortal Instrument series. Genuinely don't really have any ships despite the romance in this; the closest I have to one is Magnus x Alec, but that's pretty... mmm. I don't have much interaction to decide whether I do or I don't really care about that ship haha.

no nevermind the error analysis book was boring as hell
like when people in the amazon reviews go "this book was really good!" you think "oh yes finally another chemist/physicist who writes lucidly instead of writing a biography on the back of john major's head"

the dude who wrote it even sells himself off as a bit of a wacko so i thought "ok it might be a task to read w/ bad puns and dad jokes like CGP books do but lets try it" nope it was as boring as the rest of them

i know no-one cares but still never do science kids its boring as all hell

It's okay, most of what I've been reading lately is just.. Egyptology.

I've been reading a lot of hieroglyphic texts lately, moreso from period I know nothing about, which is difficult, but I'm getting there =]

I've also been reading Willeke Wendrich's book on Egyptian Archaeology. It's got some pretty good articles in it - I actually try to get it into every essay I write, with varying degrees of success.

The Fault In Our Stars - John Green

Like, I read it completely expecting it to be a novel equivalent of a chick flick and I was surprised to find that it wasn't a chick flick and that the characters were likeable and had some sort of development.

I understand why it should be sad but I just found the whole thing rather sweet and quite charming.

It's funny that I told myself that I would have read it by last Wednesday.

Also, the film must have been different from the book because my friend said how awesome this certain part was and how satisfying it was and it was, like, two or three short paragraphs.

Loving it. Definitely better than the Divergent series, I'd say. And as it is mandatory for English Lit I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale. I kid you not, it is hard to trawl through. I'm fine that it is a feminist novel but oh man it's not any good.

Star Maker by william olaf stapledon

nothing like 1930s science fiction ey

the concept is an interesting one- i mean it's basically an excuse for Elaborate Worldbuilding in terms of alien planets and lifeforms and cultures and i am such a sucker for that kind of thing.
there's also a LOT of philosophical/spiritual/hypothetical discussion though, the kind that can go on for pages and pages.

like five pages describing a group of bodyless explorers' consciousnesses all merged together and going over the subtleties of "we" compared to "i" in terms of describing oneself as part of a melting pot of different beings' experiences and knowledges and using that collective to attain higher planes of mental acuty but still being aware of one's own self...
stuff like that, and at times i'm sitting reading it with a load of question marks floating through the back of my mind all with the magic roundabout music playing in the distance.
i'm at a bit like that now where he's talking about intelligent life on planets enduring the struggle of ending violence and power grabs in exchange for altruism and self-love, to avoid destruction and achieve a utopia (but also risking a mental addiction to curiosity and telepathic spiritual travel of the universe which leaves their bodies to stagnate and die??? or something???) and um well this is a good bit to read at night tbh, it helps me to drift off.

though reading makes me tired anyway, blame years and years of habitually reading in bed before i sleep and having the pavlovian response to it, SIGHS.

Not usually much of a book... read... guy myself, but I was lent the first book in the Vampire Hunter D series a while ago and have finally taken the plunge. That said, lots of exposition in the prose and sudden rants coming from the characters themselves, which comes across as jarring and/or unintentionally hilarious, depending on what's said when.

If the rest of the books are like this, I might just stop after reading this one. In the middle of Chapter 4 at the moment, so I hope it at least picks up the pace, if it can't meet or exceed my expectations.

I find it so hard to read while I have something I'm writing on the go. I love words but sometimes there are too many words ygm? Anyway, it's testimony to the fact that I'm not doing my creative piece coursework that I'm on my third book since Christmas lol.

I'm currently reading Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh which is... Interesting. I'm so glad it's a humorous book because if I wasn't reading about Renton falling into a pool of urine while simultaneously his trousers are getting covered in crap in the men's toilets of a betting shop I don't think I'd be able to cope with having to read everything written in Scottish eye-dialect.

I've also read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sàenz (which is a really good contemporary YA feat non-straight protags, ethnic cast & is still painfully realistic and well-written rather than - as some books featuring a representational cast do - just leaving it to the cast/representation to carry the entire novel.

I read Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell too, it's for like 9 year olds but it's better written than most of the stuff you find in the general section. The characters are also the absolute best and everything about it is really vivid and exciting.

Anyway that's me.

Rather overdue update from my last post:
1. Love the Keys to the Kingdom Series.
2. Finished both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments series. Also read The Bane Chronicles.
3. Read some maths and physics books for wider reading

Now I'm reading this book about the world's 'baddest gangsters' (the title makes me cringe but the introduction to these people makes it okay) and honestly, can't read more than one person/group a day. It's a lot to take in for me ): After that, will probably go back to my cryptography books.

Oh dear lord, that's my favorite book series (with Warriors being a decently places second). It's honestly really good, though it's a bit slow up until the reaping. Catching Fire and Mockingjay are a tad confusing if you don't pay attention, but are very good as well.

Nineteen eighty-four by George Orwell

I was one of the only people in my grade that read the book and liked it. People thought the plot was stupid and stuff like that, but I honestly think it's a good read.

As for me, i'm reading A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving because it's my summer homework (only 1/3 of the way through and it's due on the 22nd. I hate procrastination). Not bad, though I vastly prefer 1984 so far.
