BRASIL
world cup started a couple days back
so far it's been really good, a couple controversies, Netherlands went HAM :police: :police:
-
can't believe yesterday's result
Did a fantasy team on another forum, only player to get me points so far is Beausejour. My team was a piss take tbf
Feel bad for Italy, they're gonna get rekt tonight
-
Australia actually got a goal, I'm just happy about that.
Referee was awful in the Brasil game, but I guess some home decisions are to be expected.
Still calling Belgium to win it.
-
Damn.... Netherlands 5-1 over the defending champs? That's amazing.
-

A lot of the refs have been terrible, I get the whole having a wide spread of refs in trying to be fair but it really should just come down to who's the best and let them ref
EDIT: James Rodriquez, top top player. Really hope he goes to a massive club in the summer.
-
he's making millions at monaco, wish he decided to go to a better club last summer.
off to see the england game with some of the lads tonight, oi oi!!

Apparently he's already asked to leave so he can find a bigger challenge =P
Hope the lads pull through. Let's rek em lads!!
EDIT: Uruguay just got #REKT
Joel Campbell > Cesc Fabregas tbh
-
Bolanos with that pinpoint delivery, costa rica did the businessss
-
I only see the US beating Ghana (maybe) and possibly (not bloody likely) tying with the Portuguese
-
Shaqiri's set pieces today have been poor
Shame about the result but there were a lot of positives from the England game. Really impressed with Sterling in the #10 role.
EDIT: WHAT AN ENDING
Superb tackle, great counter
-

nah, Ghana are quality, you're coming last mate
-
nah, Ghana are quality, you're coming last mate
Whilst I think Ghana will beat USA they're not quite as good as they were a few years back
It's Cabaye time <3
-
Proud of Bosnia though, scored their first goal at a World Cup in the Maracana. Good going there :P

shame they didn't win, they're a very good side. I also found out about Dzeko's story in Bosnia recently, was surprisingly hard hitting. I'll try and find it again later actually...
-
first draw of the world cup this year, most boring thing i've watched in a long time
-
Today's games got me so heated
Why Nigeria didn't start Ameobi I'll never know. Dude was easily their biggest threat (not even joking either).
Pepe you donkey.
Dunno if I can be arsed with USA v Ghana tbh
also Balotelli asked "Why always me?"
what a legend
-
Odemwingie seemed to light Nigeria up a little more when he came on, surprised he didn't start the match.

They look pretty promising indeed. To be honest, they mostly had quite the story behind them being in Bosnia during that time. Also, heard that Ibrahimovic could've opted to play for Bosnia...
That would be a really solid team with him (not that it isn't solid already), Dzeko / Zlatan up front :O

I can kinda see why he didn't, he wanted to stick with the team that were so successful in qualifying. Unfortunately the players just didn't step up on the big occasion.
The Zlatan Bosnia thing's blown out of proportion. His dad was Bosnian and his mother was Croatian, both had emigrated to Sweden before his birth and he had always been brought up there and therefore himself hadn't been through the hardship compared with the other Bosnian players (like Dzeko who, if it wasn't for his mother telling him he wasn't allowed to play football in the park, could have been killed in a kid). Seen a lot of people jump on the Bosnian bandwagon and subsequently have a go at Zlatan for representing Sweden and it's all a bit "ehhhhhhh" really.
Purely from a football perspective Dzeko / Zlatan as a strikeforce would be very good to see though, two very complete strikers.
-
Not having a go at Zlatan for not doing so, I just think it is more of a shame he didn't.
Some of the stories behind the Bosnia side though...wow.
Bosnia's qualifying record was decent though? Scored 30, conceded 6, won 8, drew 1, lost 1...pretty impressive. Still, I think they'll do well this year.
USA took the lead 29 seconds in, still holding on...oh wait, Ayew makes it 1-1.
-
Nah wasn't say you but more people in general, sorry =P
finished 2-1, big win for the US
-
Round 2 begins today, Brazil v Cameroon.
Looking forward to seeing how Belgium kick off their tournament against Algeria too.
-
dead at (minus captain bonus) John Boye being my top points scorer in my fantasy team
A lot of pressure on Bougherra the legend today
-
Round 2 begins today, Brazil v Cameroon.
Wasn't it Brazil v Mexico?
-
Oh for christs sake how did I screw that up...
Not that it was a memorable match between Brazil and Mexico anyways.
-
Come on South Korea!! Got some of these boys in my fantasy team lol
-
algeria and bulgaria had a flop fest today lol that was awful
-
algeria and bulgaria had a flop fest today lol that was awful
it was Belgium lol
feel bad for Akinfeev, such a big mistake
-
dammit, howd I screw that up
I knew it started with a b >.<
-
Spain going out it seems wow
need Torres to come on and change the tournament for them
-
Spain got touuuuched
that's jokes, chile went ham though
-
that moment when Australia have been outperforming Spain.
I've been really impressed with how they've done actually, but they'll struggle to beat Spain without Cahill
-
Chile should beat Netherlands
Massive game today, so nervous
-
COME ON ENGLAND DON'T LET US DOWN LADS
-
that awkward moment when Australia have been outperforming Spain.
There you go, this seems a bit funnier to me. GO ENGLAND, YOU (as well as everyone) ARE BETTER THAN SPAIN!
-
looks like englands gonna go down, 2-1
-
We can still technically go through but it's not in our hands and is quite unlikely
if Costa Rica (somehow) beat Italy then we're out.
Gerrard should just retire now. Urgh.
-
oh my GOD the ref in the uruguay england game was absolutely naff! jfc england you also suck i'm going to go support the netherlands now
-
The ref was poor but unfortunately the lads just didn't perform. Don't really blame Hodgson, bar not trying to get Terry out of international retirement I don't think there's anything else he could have done. Since we're note technically out I'll still back us but got France and back up just in case.

oh Song...
-
Rooney scores a tap in for his first world cup goal and the nation's bowing at his feet.
Am I seriously the only person in this country who realises that on the biggest stage he is freakin' useless?

Considering the amount of stick he's consistently had for a few years you are definitely not the only one. He was actually decent last night, tried to get the team moving but he wasn't the main driver enough (which is what you want from a #10) and could have had a few more.
Plus if he had made the mistakes Gerrard did yesterday the press would have torn him to shreds last night.
Henderson and Cahill have been England's best players this tournament for sure (so far).
EDIT: Fair play to Costa Rica, they were class
-
Well guys, Messi saves Argentina again, but Iran fought like warriors.
-
If only Iran had taken their abundance of chances. Fair play to Messi, was a spectacular goal.
-
2 all. Tie for Ghana and Germany, and Muller's face was bloody as hell at the end.
-
Such a great game, was hoping Ghana would pull through (had them in a sweepstake 4 years back so they've been my African team since I guess?), John Boye at the back looks a very good player (bar the mistake for Dempsey's goal, whoops).
Disappointed at Nigeria not starting Ameobi again. Either way Bosnia will probably beat them.
Then Portugal v USA tomorrow, come on Ronaldo (sorry USA fans) =]
-
Half the teams I was going for in this are out, and half are still in at the moment.
Here's to hoping the US or Russia get out of the group stage. :c We all know Spain's going nowhere, and England's out too.
-
Well the Belgium game was terrible so I started watching it with CBBC commentary, so ridiculous. They just kept on doing dolphin noises and saying nonsense, brought the entertainment it was lacking
-
Algeria 4-2 South Korea. Cracking match, genuinely thought it'd be dull but apparently not.
Russia are close...to going out then.
I'm rooting for almost every team now. Bosnia / England are out and Japan are close, but Colombia / USA / Ghana / Ivory Coast / Belgium / France / Nigeria / Costa Rica / Netherlands / Chile / Brazil / Mexico / Croatia are all in still. At least someone I like will end up winning xD
-
No more Seedorf and Henry on the BBC coverage now =[
only positive is that it will possibly mean more Savage lol
-
No more Seedorf and Henry on the BBC coverage now =[
only positive is that it will possibly mean more Savage lol
Is there a reason for it or something?
-
Is there a reason for it or something?
Seedorf has got stuff to sort out (he's been replaced as Milan boss so that stuff needs sorted and then is gonna look for a new role somewhere) and Henry's got a match on Friday for NYRB v Toronto FC
-
Ah, shame. They were pretty good.
USA v Ronaldo Portugal tonight. Gogogo USA, genuinely want to see them go through.
-
I'm about to watch that game Spriter.
-
No offence to US fans but I need Ronaldo to have a huge game tonight
-
2-2 no way that just happened.
90+5'. hell of a shot there though
-
No f*****g way. We had it, then we let Ronaldo complete a pass to tie smh.
-
we should have kept dempsey in there at the end
-
Nah man, we just screwed up defending.
-
we still needed dempsey, he just makes everything better
-
That's why Ronaldo is world class, that cross whew
can't blame the defence for that
Dempsey in the end wouldn't have helped, it was just really reckless from Bradley. If you had a different CM it might have been different.
-
Backing Costa Rica to go far. Argentina's progress will depend on who they meet in the last 16.
Reckon Germany will win it for the first time though.
-
That USA equaliser though, wow. The swerve on the shot was incredible.
Gonna be watching the Brazil game tonight and if the other one is on the red button, I'll nip that one on every now and then. Holland v Chile is my main match for the 5pm kick-offs, but I want the Socceroos to do well against Spain...so I'll keep tabs on that match too.
Oh, people forgot ITV4 exists.
-
I know man. That swerve was amazing. Anyone else see the one handed save Howard made after the ball hit the goalpost?
-

didn't help that on BBC Sport it didn't say ITV4 were showing it smh

Argentina will get found out, their midfield is just so lacklustre at the moment. Put them against Germany, France, Colombia, etc. and they'll lose I reckon. Same for Belgium, look very disappointing.
So Suarez bit another player... third time he's done this haha
Prandelli's resigned from the Italy job and blamed trying to get the best out of Balotelli as one of the main reasons for failure... kinda understandable, should have gone with Insigne / Immobile / Cerci as an attacking three from the start.
Costa Rica v Greece in the next round... SMH
-
This world cup has been so bloody exciting! Suarez is a sneak disser
Brazil v Chile will be a good game, so will Colombia v Uruguay. :police:
-
I think Suarez should stop tasting his competition, even if on accident (didn't look accidental. *Rimshot*). Still, Greece managed to sneak in and shut Ivory Coast out, who would've thought that would happen?
-
Ivory Coast always flop. Fair play to Greece.
Colombia look so good, James Rodriguez has been player of the tournament so far.
Suarez will probs get a 10 match international ban since the first two times he got a 7 and 8 match ban respectively
-
Could be longer than 10, in my opinion. Shame, Colombia v Uruguay would be even more interesting with Suarez - and Falcao if he wasn't injured.
France are looking good though, they should do well against Ecuador today, while Iran and Nigeria are going to battle for 2nd in their group...haha France v Iran in the last 16 would be funny.
USA can still finish top of their group, even if they'd have to beat Germany to do so. USA v Russia / Algeria would be fun for a last 16 match...
-
I'm not looking for a win against Germany. It would take a miracle for that. I just hope for a Ghana/Portugal draw.
-
Suarez has got a 9 game international ban and a 4 month ban from football apparently
-
Hm.... That sounds about fair. Then again, I don't watch football (gonna call it this to practice for French class), so I don't know much about how fair it seems.
-
Yeah it's pretty fair tbh, ends up missing quite a lot of games. Seen a few saying he should get a bigger ban lol
-
Suarez has got a 9 game international ban and a 4 month ban from football apparently
omg no :(
That's what he gets for trying to be Hannibal Lecter
But I'm watching the USA v Germany game. I'm torn.
I only just started watching football with the Germany vs Ronaldo Portugal game a few weeks ago. So I don't know much about it but I know I quite enjoy watching Germany play. But I live in the US. So I'm experiencing a conflict of interest right now watching this game...
-
Germany 1-0 US. Guys played their hearts out, great game. But. Portugal 2-1 Ghana. Boys, we're going to the round of 16.
-
Ronaldo should have scored 4 goals v Ghana, shame. At least he can rest up and be fully fit for the next season.
Fair play to the USMNT, they really did achieve something very difficult =]
-
All I have to say is.....
Thank you Ronaldo.
-
All I have to say is.....
Thank you Ronaldo.
nah you should be thanking Pepe for completely screwing Portugal over in the first game and his subsequent suspension for the US game.
-
^Well, I guess that helped as well. So... thanks for screwing up Pepe.
-
And the Ghanaian goalie too.
Interestingly, the four month ban applies to everything to do with football, including training and going to any football stadium.
It's an appropriate ban though, and he misses the first Liverpool derby too.
-

yeah even when he does return he's not gonna have any sort of match fitness, even if trains and stuff at home / away from the club then it won't be the same
his first available game back is v us too =P
EDIT: What a legend lol
(http://i.imgur.com/wl0WVSO.gif)
-
First Round of 16 match now, Brazil v Chile.
Neymar looks like he might have been injured already, worryingly.
-
It's been a good game so far, Sanchez is so good for Chile
-
Extra-time it is then! Webb ruled out Hulk's goal for handball, so it's 1-1 going into the next half-hour.
-
Great game from Howard Webb. Chile look better, it'll kick off if Brazil don't go through lol
-
Suarez apologized to his bite victim and promised that it would never happen again
(yeah right). The defender that took the bite (I forget the name and team) said he wants the sentence on Suarez to be reduced, so he seeming to be a good sport about it.
-

Chiellini was the one who got bit. Apparently he's apologised to try and reduce the sentence so that he has more of a chance of forcing a move to Barcelona but it's just rumours atm =P
so annoyed that Argentina squeezed through earlier and it's a shame they get one of Belgium or USA, what makes it worse is that its France v Germany and the winner of that will probably play Colombia (I'd be surprised if Colombia didn't beat Brazil based on the tournament so far) =[
-
Both Switzerland and Algeria deserved to get through tbh, but Switzerland should have been 1-0 up at half-time.
USA and Belgium are having a good match so far, could be a cracker.
-
belgium shouldve won 10-0 tim howard is a madman
congrats to julian green, 19 years old and put us close. hell be good in the future
-
Tim Howard went super saiyan to save some of those. Too bad we lost 2-1. Still, with the U.S. you never wanted to say die. They fought the whole 120 minutes. Nice job guys.
-
Klinsmann's project at USA will be the real deal hopefully. It's actually inspiring what he's trying to achieve. American mentality towards most things >>>>>>>>> ours =[
-
Well GL, England's time will come eventually. Still, Howard's 16 saves are most in a World Cup match since 1966.
-
That is if England actually get better and the media stop stomping on them.
Really wanted the USA, Howard was absolutely mental.
Looked on Twitter and #ThingsTimHowardCouldSave is brilliant. Don't know who's better, him or Ochoa.
-
There's going to be a new meme for Howard now. It's going to be everywhere. We need Howard next World Cup, unless he retires before or someone else becomes better. Still, that was amazing.
-
He'll be like, 45 next time around, he'll most likely be retired by then.
Just remembered, Belgium had 39 attempts on goal last night :o
-
Which is sad, looks like we'll need some standouts in the MLS or wherever to find a new goalie, but hey, we've got 4 years.
-
Don't know who's better, him or Ochoa.
Howard; Ochoa's somewhat of a liability.
We need Howard next World Cup, unless he retires before or someone else becomes better. Still, that was amazing.
Guzan's a very good backup, there's no worry if Howard retires.
Which is sad, looks like we'll need some standouts in the MLS or wherever to find a new goalie, but hey, we've got 4 years.
Yedlin and Green (granted he doesn't play in the MLS) should become v good players by then. Plus in general football is growing in the USA, Klinsmann should get a lot of credit for what he's doing.
-
^What's wrong with the MLS? I don't know much about it, so please tell me.
-
There are just more good players in other leagues because the teams have more money.
-
^What's wrong with the MLS? I don't know much about it, so please tell me.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, I just said that it'll hopefully start to grow and improve. It's already come a long way but there's plenty of work to be done. Plus it doesn't really compare to the major leagues in Europe. It's not just down to money (there are salary caps in MLS I believe though) but the talent levels coming through aren't as good atm because more kids are going to play NFL or basketball or baseball atm. Plus coaching at a junior level in the USA isn't that great yet. That's what Klinsmann's trying to change, he's trying to get children to pick it up quicker and to get better coaching for it. It's admirable really.
-
^Ok, thanks for telling me. I've had people tell me i'd be good at soccer if I conditioned myself for it. I played keeper for a bit one day in gym, some of the saves I made we crazy. I hope Klinsmann accomplishes what he's trying to do, it's admirable like you said.
-
Ronaldo should have scored 4 goals v Ghana, shame. At least he can rest up and be fully fit for the next season.
He's carrying that team. At least Argentina have more than just Messi.
(there are salary caps in MLS I believe though)
Yes, there are. Same for the NHL. It's an overall salary cap rather than per player. They don't move players in the same way. They have the trade system so no one gets sold for £85m
-
I really hope Columbia wins against Brazil. Their fairy tale run cannot end here.
-

He was carrying it whilst injured too and the other good players (Moutinho especially) were so underwhelming.
Yeah all American sports have salary caps as far as I know, wasn't 100% sure on MLS though, need to look into it more
I really hope Columbia wins against Brazil. Their fairy tale run cannot end here.
Colombia doing so well so far isn't really a fairytale, everyone (at least should have) expected them to do well. Costa Rica's the fairytale of this World Cup so far
-
^From what i've heard, Brazil has a 72% chance to win, so the odds aren't in Columbia's favor. Then again, it's how you play, not how the odds are.
-
^From what i've heard, Brazil has a 72% chance to win, so the odds aren't in Columbia's favor. Then again, it's how you play, not how the odds are.
I'd expect Colombia to win on the basis that they've been the most impressive team in the World Cup so far but home advantage and rising to the occasion could favour Brazil. It's very hard to say which team wins at this point unless there's a clear gap in abilities between the teams due to the pressure involved, it's all about which side teams up the most.
-
Either way, it's going to be one hell of a game.
-
France out, really disappointed. That game was for the taking but they showed England levels of desire to win smh
EDIT: Colombia out too =[
really hope Rodriguez gets player of the tournament but I really doubt it now. Was an absolute joy to watch.
-
I'm hoping that Brazil can get through their next match against Germany without Neymar.
Injuring Neymar was Columbia's way of saying "we can't win so you can't either!"
That just isn't fair!
-

blame the ref, he didn't have a handle on the game
plus Colombia were definitely still in it so that is a very harsh accusation
-
Costa Rica doing really well to keep it 0-0, Dutch free-kick hitting the post is about as close as they've come to conceding.
It's also harsh to even suggest that Colombia only injured Neymar to get revenge. And the player who "kneed" (because kneed sounds like it was intentional) Neymar has come out and apologised anyways, so I don't know how one can accuse the injury of being an intentionally inflicted injury :/
OFF THE LINE! Go Costa Rica! Extra time now, it's going to be a long 30 minutes for Costa Rica and the dutch.
Krul was such an arse there, coming up to the penalty takers before their pens and saying something. Doubt it was anything positive either.
Krul ending for Costa Rica though, such a shame. They've done fantastic to get to the quarters.
-

Tbf it's all mind games, the penalty takers could easily do the same to the goalkeeper. It's a bit of gamesmanship but it happens, you'll do whatever it takes to win.
-
so upset that costa rica are out, but they've done so well this world cup. they deserve all the plaudits they get, definitely not luck, just good 'ol fashion teamwork. :police:
-
Brazil v Germany tonight, could go either way, regardless of Neymar being out
-
4-0 TO GERMANY IN 25 MINUTES
oh my god germany please you're murdering the brazilians
-
Brazil have absolutely crumbled. Shocking performance.
Germany have been good enough to utilise it to superb effect. This should not be happening in a World Cup semi final.
-
entire country of brazil on suicide watch right now, that 6 minute stretch with 4 goals was absolutely amazing
-
Well, I thought it was either us or Germany. People thought Germany had no chance, even with Neymar and Silva out. They can shut up now.
-
7-0
brazil you may as well leave the stadium now
-
The sports room on Showdown is going absolutely nuts. 7-0? Damn. I thought Spain had it bad.
-
well brazil have sort of redeemed themselves with a single goal but bye brazil
-
Well, I thought it was either us or Germany. People thought Germany had no chance, even with Neymar and Silva out. They can shut up now.
not really, Germany were the favourites.
-
^I know a lot of doubters. Germany had better win after this.

I don't have a word to describe how shocking that was.
Germany like to break a few records and make some too, it seems.

Also Mascherano's been lowkey more important than Messi to Argentina this tournament
-
Still in shock from the Brazil game.
Should be a pretty good final.

I should have specified whether it was a winner's medal or runner's up medal
-
I should have specified whether it was a winner's medal or runner's up medal
cheeky =P
but yeah I really hope they give the Golden Ball to James Rodriguez but I expect it'll go to Lahm / Muller (based on if Muller scores in the final) or Messi depending on which team wins
GERMANY WIN
Very powerful as well that the first two players in the German national side who were born in Unified Germany combined for the goal.
Messi got the golden ball? What an absolute disgrace. A list of players more deserving than Messi:
- James Rodriguez
- Manuel Neuer
- Philip Lahm
- Thomas Mueller
- Mat Hummels
- Javier Mascherano
- Arjen Robben
disgusting, absolutely disgusting
Ricardo Rodriguez of Switzerland should have got the young player of the tournament ahead of Pogba too smh
-
na man roony shud of got da goldun bul cuz hes are best player!
Germany wins its first World Cup. Rodriguez's goal was definitely the best, followed by Cahill's.
-
James' goal was one of the best I've ever seen, it was just amazing.
-
na man roony shud of got da goldun bul cuz hes are best player!
it's kinda sad that he was one of our better players yet still was underwhelming =[
-
I didn't see the final because is was in West Virginia at the time, but yay Germany!
Even though we lost, I loved seeing Howard's amazing performance against Belgium.
-
As an Englishman, I had to suffer the hardest choice in life since I bought Pokemon Red.
Argentina? Or Germany?
I picked Argentina, unfortunately. Yeah, it's been nearly 70 years but I just can't let it go >.<
