RULES UPDATE
« on: November 14, 2008, 01:29 »
Ladies and gentlemen,

As you have noticed, we have been enacting a number of changes on the forums. Some forums were cleaned up, others were split, and new ones were added. Some stuff was moved around and some forums had their details changed.

Along with that, we have looked at a number of other things we wanted to change. For this reason, we have taken a look at the rules as they were, and decided that they needed to change.

No new rules were added. Some were removed, others were trimmed or merged, and some have been clarified.

Although you are now allowed to do as much or more than before, and they have not placed further restrictions on your behaviour, we do suggest that you read the rules once more to familiarize yourself with them.

As always, you are expected to follow these rules everywhere on the site, as is appropriate. This has not changed.

Oh goodie, less things for me to enforce. :P

I have the memory of a goldfish, which rules were removed out of simple curiosty.

As for the new forums,  are you creating them to generate intrest, instead of the old way of when there's intrest, create them.

And what exactly goes in "Media" that doesn't go in Music, TV and Literature?

Also, points for scrapping the limited trade function..  Nice decision.

radio..  shows?
though why anyone needs a who forum for radio shows i don't know..

anyway
yeh, media confuses me..  supose i'll get used to all the extra faf of not knowing which one has been posted in, if any, and then pressing the wrong one..  and then wondering where news items go, because they tend to be written AND on tv..  and its all terribly confusing
probably

rules..  im glad you changed the first one, only took you..  how many years to not always be right? =P

one question though..  what is classed as inethical?
i know that probably sounds stupid but..  you know me! =D
plus, people from different countries and cultures and religions and what have you have different ideas on what is ethical and what isn't..  like..  *plucks a random example from the air* cannibalism.
o.o

I have the memory of a goldfish, which rules were removed out of simple curiosty.

It's difficult to say, as most were merged into others, rather than them being removed entirely. Just read them - what matters are the current rules.

It's an experiment to see how popular they are and how well they work. No guarantee that they'll stay.

Whatever doesn't fit in any of those. Plays and radio are two examples, but there's more, as well as stuff that doesn't fit into one specific forum - like, possibly adaptations.

The current phrasing is the one that was always inteded by that rule.

I think it's best to consider the common norm that is present in the western culture as a whole today, focused on west Europe, as that's where the majority of our visitors come from.

I don't think this is actually something that is common in any culture likely to visit the site.

Heh, I think i'll make a list of changes I've spotted, out of curiosity, based on the old rules/numbering:
Using quick titles:

-'The admins and mods are always right' Rephrased
-'Illegal/Inethical things' expanded
-'No advertising' reworded
-'Sig image rules' condensed
-'Don't overquote' simplified
-'Report rule breaking posts' expanded/merged with 'don't report posts for no reason'
-'Make readable posts' created, formed from rules 'CAPS LOCK', + 'Don't break the screen'
-'Let moderators make moderating decisions.', from 'Don't bother admins with PMs', + 'Don't tell the mods what to do'
-'Don't make official threads' shortened.
-'I can answer all your questions' rephrased
-'No Swearing' expanded

That's about all i've picked out.

And because we all want to know-
'Removed' Rules: Stuff which seems to be missing, including merged rules:
- No Clans Out Of Role Play
- Do Not Report Posts Without a Reason
- DON'T WRITE IN ALL-CAPS!!!!!
- Don't ask to become a moderator.
- Make sure your posts don't break the screen.
- Don't bother the admins with useless PMs.
- Don't tell the mods what to do.

Why do this? Because I like changes... Less reading, so yeah, excluding Rule 20, this is based upon what the rules looked like last year...

*Ready to be shot*

I can understand most of them, since most are merged, but mind if I ask why 'No Clans Out Of Role Play' and 'Don't ask to become a moderator' were removed?

The no clans rule has been removed because the reason it was created no longer applies as much, and because the community has changed enough that it wasn't necessary.

Don't ask to become a moderator - this is a policy thing, in that we don't accept applications from moderators, but not a rules thing, and it being in there felt unnecessary.

Oh, now I see... I'd expected the Clans thing to be changed with 'Keep Role Play in Role Play' or something similar. Heh.

As for policy, I know what you mean, but I haven't seen any sort of 'policy' page elsewhere on the site, so I'd assume you wouldn't be keeping the 'asking harms your chances' idea as seriously? Well, if some of the newer members are enthusiastic enough to ask, as far as I can see, there's nothing discouraging them from doing so anymore...

Which reminds me, some of these changes wouldn't have anything to do with getting the numbers down to an even '20', after the other changes? Well, it looked kinda convenient that the infamous Rule #20 is now bottom of the list...

It's internal policy within the admin team, no real need to publish those things.

Asking will harm their chances, but the asking doesn't harm their chance in that we keep a score or anything, but that it is more evidence that they do not display the behaviour we look for in staff.

It's stuff like "I will answer all your questions here" and "the official moveset thread."  It trivializes the point of the forums, the #1 reason why such a rule exists.

Cheers Muhed for enlightening me on that.

It sounded like no: 'The Official Swampert Thread' and such.
