About 3-5 years ago I was a regular on IRC.
I remember that there was a way to look at old conversations.
(I assume since I had downloaded mIRC onto my laptop)
I was wondering if there was any way that I could look at old conversations from then
if I download mIRC again even though I am using a different computer etc etc.
The reason being is because I had exchanged info with various friends and have recently decided to try and get back in touch with them
Please help

You can't do it unless you have the original computer/hard drive and they were logged in the first place.
-
doesn't the irc host/channel owner itself keep a log of everything anyway??? or was that something i read somewhere and cron jobs just kind of smash it to all hell/whoever owns the channel is Weird about it and its not on by default
-
They might but it's a stretch to assume they'll have records of that much time back. It's also a stretch to assume they'll find it and sift through all those logs unless you have a specific date and time, let alone allowing some random person to have those logs.

yyyeah this is true and also the fact that its contact details which aren't pass the parcel fodder i guess lmao
-
i think i know the chan owners you want if ^^^ is the case
and i gotta say theres probably not a chance youll get on to them hahaha
#ayla #sherrin and #bat are ones i think you frequented?
aylas just sort of awful now
fyrus isnt interested in irc/pkmn.net any more
dunno about BY. he still posts here sometimes
lyude/shiny_lucario still frequents irc, but i dont think she ever really owned a chan you were in?
havent heard from veyka in years
in general yeah youd need to have your old computer and pull the files out of there
even then are you sure theyd still have the same contact info they had 3-5 years ago? i know fyrus sure as hell doesnt, hes changed a whole lot. but i doubt hed enjoy me posting his info to people he doesnt know haha.
-
Another factor is the fact that we've only really been on synIRC since 2009 or 2010 and I dunno how long it's been since Bonnie's been here.
But no, it's not chan owners because the chan owners can't access the logs at will. They don't have the server access that you need. Your best hope is the network/server owners, and I'm not going to reiterate my post on this that I just made.
finally, chandler's a dude and veyka still frequents #pkmn.net. At any given moment it's me, nutter, Veyka, and Chandler on chat
-
i thought chandler was lyude now? last i spoke that was the case. some kinda lesbian furry.
-
chandler is lyude and he's a dude, that whole thing of furries is something i've avoided at any rate
-
man, last i saw of ayla was suddenly finding her being part of the whole tulpa thing on tumblr... small world.
this is just me kind of doing the whole "ahhhh nostalgia ain't what it used to be" thing.
not that i was ever so active on irc anyway. guess that i'm surprised that it's all still going.
but uh yeah if it is then i wish you, op, luck with the power of networking to find whoever it is you lost contact with.

mIRC stores logs in C:\Programs Files\mIRC\logs I think, so look there if you still have your laptop.
I don't use mIRC anymore though since it started being a subscribed service or whatever. I use HexChat. It's practically the exact same as XChat but totally free. The layout is near if not completely identical.
IRC went super quiet before we went over to SynIRC network, I remember back in the day when we had about 5 servers dedicated to PKMN.NET There was storm.empireirc.net which was the best I think. Astro.empireirc.net was also good if storm was having problems. Netsplits were frequent and always used to confuse the hell out of me before I knew what they were.
We need to get more people on the IRC again, IRC is the best.
EDIT: Here were the servers -
Vortex.EmpireIRC.Net
Terra.EmpireIRC.Net
Tempest.EmpireIRC.NET
Selene.EmpireIRC.Net
Pyro.EmpireIRC.Net
Helios.EmpireIRC.NET
Cryo.EmpireIRC.NET
Astro.EmpireIRC.Net
I remember the Encyclopedia Dramatica article on Pokemon fansites mentioned how bizarre it was that there were so many servers for basically just #PKMN.NET and a few others. We got maybe 30 people at max? I don't think it ever exceeded that amount. Crazy really.
