Title: Mewtwo coming to Smash 4!
Post by: Richard and Blaziken on October 24, 2014, 00:56
Nintendo has just dropped a bomb, revealing that Mewtwo will be playable in Smash as free DLC in Spring 2015 to players who own both 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash. I'm sure this is going to cause some complaining, but free DLC is nice DLC, especially when it's of this magnitude.

Let's hope he's learned how to fight since Melee. Discuss!

imo, he wasn't terrible in melee.. However, I'm not competitive so... ^^;

I wanted him to be back, so yay.

Edit: I meant he wasn't that bad. Sorry!

Yeah, Mewtwo was awful in Melee. I'm sure they're going to make him better for Smash 4, it'd be a huge disappointment if he still sucked.

I'm hoping he'll be offered as regular DLC for a reasonable price. Until then, I'll just have to be satisfied playing as him in Brawl through a method I'm not entirely sure is allowed to be discussed (though it doesn't involve piracy or require modifying the actual Wii system; I'd categorize it as a game mod akin to how Team Fortress started as a mod of Quake).

You mean through Project M?

Yeah. It only works on NTSC and Japanese versions of the game, which may explain why I haven't seen anyone talk about it here. I know Nintendo hasn't outright sent the Project M team a Cease and Desist, but they don't like discussion of it on Miiverse. So it's in that legal gray area.

Seems to me they're trying to promote Wii U sales by bringing in Mewtwo as a DLC. The Wii U's sales are way behind PS4 and Xbox One's, I heard. But they're trying really hard. Both systems and both versions of the game? Theoretically you only need one game that you'd actually play. In your right mind you wouldn't get two games would you? The versions aren't even that different anyway. Sure, there are aesthetic differences and exclusive stages. But the two versions of the game still have the same name, unlike Pokemon X and Y, so most people wouldn't look into their differences much. Marketing at work here.

Well I don't have a Wii U anyway. I'm not keen on buying something I'm not expecting to use anyway. :(

I guess this is cool, let's just hope it doesn't suck as the MK8 Mercedes free DLC xD

On another note, in the same interview Nintendo confirmed 8-way local battles apparently? That's pretty damn awesome.

Screw Mewtwo, Roy was my boy. Though I guess this gives hope for further DLC in the future!

Actually, this is false.

Yeah, I know about the exclusive stages and the aesthetic differences. However, there's a bunch of other features on the Wii U that the DS doesn't have. For example, the way classic mode is set up. The DS, you choose a path, on the console version, it's a lot more complicated. It's hard to explain, but classic is a lot different. Also, there's like a smash board game mode on the Wii U. You collect power ups, like in smash run, and characters for a huge final stock battle. To more characters you get, the more lives. Something else: on Jungle Hijinks, you can ride in the barrels to the front and back on the stage. It's easier to ko a character in the back. Plus if you ride the barrels too many times in a row without a cooloff, they'll explode!

That's just a little bit of the difference.

Right, but the differences aren't obvious from the title of the two versions. When one reads the same title of the game twice, the person would assume that the same exact game is available on both systems. Sure, there's a world of difference between the Wii U and 3DS versions, but it's not so obvious to make it worth the buy. They're not really "marketable" differences, is all I meant

Anyway I plan to buy my best friend a Wii U for Christmas. I wouldn't buy a Wii U for myself because it would be a waste of money, but for someone else I would. It feels like less of a waste, at least, if I'm giving a gift and making someone happy. I know it's really selfish to think like this, but maybe she'll return the favor?

Figures the ONE character I wanted to return is ONLY given if you have both versions. I don't have $300 to dish out for a Wii U and another $40 for the game! I mean it took me six months to save up for a new laptop and another three months to save for a new 3DS XL since my other 3DS has a broken R Button.

The wording here seems to imply that he won't only be available to those that purchase both copies. (https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/525415360242393088)

I'm confident he'll become available for sale as well at some point too, so don't everyone get discouraged!

I really hope that Mew2 (to shorten) will come out on sale, because my brother and I are both going to have a 3DS copy and then the mutual WiiU copy. So we'd have to decide who gets our psychic friend.

Pretty sure you'll get it on both consoles for free if you have both versions.

Edit: nevermind, I see what you mean.

^What i'm saying is there'll be 2 3DS copies, and I'm pretty sure it only works for one of each version. This would make Mew2 appear on 1 of our 2 3DS copies and the Wii U version. That would leave one of the two ds versions out. That's what I meant. Likely should've explained it more.

Nah, I edited the post just afterwards, I hadn't read it properly. That will kind of suck for situations like that, I hadn't thought of that.

I found out that you can purchase him as DLC and you get him for free if you register both copies. So those of you without a Wii U can hold hope.

Or those without a 3DS =P

I don't understand 'register.' How you would register both copies (like, do you type in the code on the back of the game card or...?) Or where do you register both copies, where do you type the code in for example? Also can I get Mewtwo on both versions of the game, or does is it only downloadable on the Wii U?

If all I need to do to register both copies is type in the code on the back of the game card, then I may not need to have a Wii U at all. It said that Mewtwo is available to those who own both versions of the game. That doesn't imply that you need to own both systems. Or do we need to actually play both versions to access the event? (Wow I'm asking a lot questions. I must be in a questioning mood today)

I believe you have to register the codes that come with each game on Club Nintendo, though I could be wrong about that.
