Title: do you feel guilty replacing technology?
Post by: sylar on December 27, 2014, 16:27
haha

i mentioned this in the how ya doin thread, but how do you feel when replacing technology with an upgraded version? a new phone, music player, television, computer?

i feel excited for the new thing, but extremely guilty for replacing anything at all. i keep the old technology if i can (i still have my first ipod because i love it so much) and continue to feel bad for replacing it whenever i remember i have.

all my technology gets its use, i wear it down to its last legs and make sure i cant get any more juice out of it before even considering a replacement, and even knowing "this just doesnt fit my needs any longer" doesnt help that i feel just so bloody awful for no longer needing something i once relied on. i feel attached to it in a way. i almost assaulted a guy helping us move house when he wasnt treating the box holding my computer with 100% care and now im replacing it with a new computer just a year later. i still love my old one, but...

i personally blame toy story.

I've ben feeling a bit like this lately.

I've been looking for Pokemon-based apps on my 4th generation iPod and I've discovered one that may be useful to me. The problem is that it only works on iPods running the newest OS, my iPod can't download it. I really need to get a new one, but because I've had my iPod for a couple of years, I don't have the heart to get rid of it. I kinda have autism as I can develop emotional bonds with my toys and stuff, almost as though they have the ability to have feelings for me in return. I don't want my iPod to feel like I abandoned it for a new one.

Not really, mainly because I only upgrade when I need to and I mostly have to save up myself. So I don't feel guilty, although I do also use the old thing as a back up or every once in a while for the memories.

Getting rid of stuff..... that's a different story.

usually i hate my electronics more than anything before i decide its time to replace them, so i am typically joyful to kick my old stuff to the curb (ie. i rocked a 2006 dell until 2012). i still have a 2006 ipod nano i use in my car because it stores the music just fine.

and now that i have a computer where i can just swap out the parts, i feel less like i'm replacing it and more like powering up a cyborg.

Not particularly, but I never get rid of my old things. I still feel an attachment to my old Gameboy Color I got for my 9th birthday, but I know I'll never use it again because it's extremely inconvenient to do so.

We've just replaced out 32in TV with a 50in one. Don't feel bad about it as such because this new one's easier on the electric bill.

Same when I replace my car in May- The new one will be more economical and have more and better technology on board.

i generally try and upgrade it before getting to the point of replacement

i've had the same laptop for about 6 years at this point. the only replacements i've made on it are the charger (which broke about 2 years ago) which was a fraction of the actual laptop price, and i replaced the hard drive with an SSD (which increases the longevity of the laptop tenfold)

with things like phones, i think replacing apple products are out of necessity. the planned obsolescence of those things are quite unnecessary, and it's been proven they release updates meant to bog down the processing power of older ipod touches and iphones. meanwhile, i've had a samsung s3 for about 2 years and only now have i noticed it's a bit slower than it used to be. really, i think it depends on what the circumstances are of what's being replaced.

i know people who buy a new phone and laptop the day they come out and feel nothing, with tens of thousands of dollars of technology sitting in a closet somewhere, collecting dust. i think it's safe to say those people are morally devoid.

These emotions will be punishable by death by 2020, so you sentimental unicorns need to get over yourselves or be slaughtered by the oppressive emotion splaying people.

On a more serious note, I don't really care about my technologies feelings when I replace it, it should have worked better if it wanted to stay xD

Whilst there are some stuff I'll still hold onto I don't ever really feel guilty for replacing certain stuff. I try not to have an emotional connection with technology because it can be replaced so easily.

^ You might get away with it, provided the impedance is correct on it.

Not if what I'm replacing is broken or cannot be used to its fullest extent due to technological changes such as the way the older box style TVs need special equipment to be able to use DVD players and the PS3/PS4/XBox/Wii U.

yeah, i mean i don't plan on making it a good sounding cab. maybe something for fuzzy drone type stuff. but who knows? today i just turned a transistor radio that finally broke after 9 years into a fuzzbox. every piece of broken technology can be recycled into something else.
