Games General / Re: What Did You Think of Pokemon Sword/Shield?
« on: August 26, 2020, 06:16 »
Wasn't that great, I think the series needs an overhaul. I get that the franchise is keeping its focus on kids but so many Pokemon fans are older and want more from these games. Adding a hard mode would make the games work for everyone. Ideally, a hard mode wouldn't let you use items in battle (including the X boost moves), opponents wouldn't have 2 pokemon all the time, leveling wouldn 't be so easy, and AI movesets would be more competitive (Battle Tower sets are somewhat competitive, so clearly they know how to do this).

Also the addition of ranked battles is cool, and I understand that 6v6's take a long time, but man 3v3 matches suck. It becomes more about choosing the right Pokemon to counter the 3 Pokemon you think your opponent will choose based on the team preview rather than prediction and game sense. You can do 6v6 battles outside of ranked but it's just teams full of Zacians and Mewtwos.

Say Hello! / Re: Sign-In Book

I do long for the simpler times, like when "hi r u 12?" was a meme or everyone was suddenly called "Vanguard". I'd even take that time when Joeno made the site look like unicorn vomit for April fool's. World needs to chill out.

One day in middle school, at age 12, I convinced my non-Pokemon-playing friend to make an account here and I watched him make that "r u 12 O0 " (there was an afro in the body of the OP) post with my own eyes. I told him it was a dumb post but he did it anyway, and every time I see posts talking about old times, someone mentions that thread. So I guess it's a good thing I didn't stop him. Wish I could tell him he's a legend here but no one has heard from him in over a decade, most of us believe he's in jail so I hope he's okay. I had nowhere to share this little-known lore so here you go.

Anyway, I do really miss gaming forums. I have a Facebook but I don't really like that Facebook and Twitter have kind of replaced message boards. The anonymity and being able to decorate your profile with avatars and sigs and things like that really made these something special. I'm a part of the discord but a lot of the people I ran with on this site have disappeared or aren't on there.

Man, the IRC was tons of fun, and I loved reading discussions about Pokemon news on here. Team building was really fun too and I liked looking at people's Sprite Art even though I never got too into it myself.

You can still go on the wayback machine and see how active this forum was (50+ users online at once sometimes) and it's neat going through the usernames and being like "oh, I forgot about her!" Give it a go.

Random Randomness / Re: Non-Political Corona/Covid-19 Thread

As a New Yorker who is considered an essential worker, things are pretty bad. Tons of hate crimes against Asian Americans here, a lot of people getting laid off and can't get unemployment because everything is crashing due of high demand. Can't find the hot items (toilet paper, hand sanitizer, gloves, face masks, thermometers, clorox/lysol wipes, disinfectant spray) anywhere and grocery store lines are ridiculously long.

Someone I know has gotten the virus but has mostly recovered afaik. My co-worker's aunt just died of the virus, a friend of mine has a relative who died as well. As of the time when this post was written there have been 2,373 deaths in my state with 92,381 confirmed cases. Over 50k deaths and over 1 millions cases globally.

Very high number of people here wearing masks, I'd say about half.= of people have masks on. Really different world compared to the what it was just a month ago.

PKMN.NET / Re: This website is dead
« on: August 13, 2015, 23:10 »
I joined when I was 12, and I'm 21 now. I used to be really active. I have over 3000 posts and I haven't been active for years.

The community is tight, yes, but imo I always sort of found that intimidating. It's really hard to make a name for yourself here. Despite how active I was on this and for how long, I doubt many people remember me. Everyone is welcoming and kind here but it still feels like the equivalent of being the new kid in school, but with people who have basically grown up together.

I still remember the site would peak at 50+ members online at the same time and IRC was really active. But when everyone in my friend group "moved on," it was tough finding my place here. I think that's what stopped me from coming back.

Maybe I'm just being silly with this, but I lurk here every few weeks or months and this is the first time I felt like I had something to say. As a kid who didn't know how to act when given anonymity, this site helped me gain some maturity but it'll be tough to replicate that now that all the regulars are adults with responsibilities and the new members are probably around the age I was when I joined. It's a tough issue to address because newer members won't be able to have the same experience we had.

Glad to see Lucas is returning; he was my main in Brawl!

Isaac not being in this game is unacceptable though.

Yes, parts like that I prefer to check on occasionally. I'm about to sleep through the mess we're in now. :s

The largest amount of people playing a single player game simultaneously is happening right now on twitch.

http://www.twitch.tv/twitchplayspokemon

People input commands in the chat: a, b, start, select, up, right, down, left, and then it happens in the game (though there is some delay), so you've basically got a ton of people working towards one goal. We reached a peak of 75k people or so playing at the same time but it's around 50k now that it's late. Thousands more are playing every day, which is making it more difficult. We have 4 badges so far, but have been stuck in the Team Rocket HQ for 15 hours or so because the maze requires a lot of precision and it's near impossible to navigate it when thousands are playing at the same time. Hell, it took us 8 hours to cross the ledge in route 9 because people kept saying "down." :s

It has been running for over 5 days now and it has been a great experience. The players want to work towards different goals sometimes (e.g. whether or not to get Eevee), items are tossed all the time, trees are insanely hard to cut, ledges cause a lot of backtracking, the S.S. Ticket and Helix Fossil are used all the time during battle and battles are down to luck. Everyone has grown attached to the Pokemon in the party. Everyone shed a tear when we accidentally released our starter, Abby the Charmeleon as well as Jay Leno the Rattata. Everyone praises Based Pidgeot for being OP and sweeping teams when given the chance.

Thoughts everyone? Where do you guys see this going over the course of the next few days? Weeks?
