The Magnificent and Majestic Tournament

Hello my PKMN.NET friends, and anyone else who falls out this category.   Sun and Moon have been for a month now and since I haven't done this for years how about a big tournament?

Yessir, a lovely tournament to bring out that rush of adrenaline and noradrenaline to the extent your body thinks it's staring down a massive bear.  What can be better?

Let's start with some questions I just know you have!

So let's begin..
A tournament is a structured contests where parties agree on terms their conduct is bound by ('the rules') sometimes for a prize both material and non-material.

Okay I have that..
Sweet.

What are the rules my good lady?

What are the rules, indeed.   For the time being, and because it's a cute novelty, let's only use Pokemon in the Aloha dex,  even if this tournament runs past Bank's update.  So basically, anything that is in the Aloha dex, expect, of course, uber, like that Bat thing and that Cat thing that looks like a fire type but it's not really a fire type but it should be a fire type.

(The Bat and the Cat? Oooooh I get it now.)

Single Battle.  The battle of kings (and queens.)

Item clause, species clause, all that stuff.

The number of participates will be decided once I gauge how much interest is in this, but I'll try to limit it down to an even number.    To enter, simply post your name, typically available times, a unique single or double digit number and I will do the rest.

How will match up times be decided?

I understand many of us live on the other side of the world from each other and obviously many of us are adults with jobs, and work and stuff and even younger people have school commitments.  So when the pair ups are revealed, the two will have a week to battle each other (can be extend if both parties agree,  you must make it observable though – post in this topic).  If one party fails to make a reasonable effort and fall out from the time limit they will be disqualified. If both, I may disqualify both, try to find a replacement or I dunno, I'll think of something.

To join this, you really must consider if you can spare at least half an hour once a week.

What is the structure of the tournament?
In the word's of Pater Gabriel 'Games Without Frontiers'  It's a knock out.  One round, sudden death, can be best two out of three, post if you'd like to see that on your initial application and we can defiantly do that.

So Casual, competitive?
Not gonna lie.  Gonna have to probably use competitive Pokemon, I've certainly EV and IV bred mine.

What will the winner recive.
Same as the loser.

Which is..?
Nothing?

Really?
Oh alright.  You will be taken to an elevated plateau where crowds upon crowds will watch your majestic accession to the land's royalty.  In the winter low-hanging sun, you will gaze upon the endless frosty green under the cliff and proudly reflect, with a small tear in your eye, the struggles, the trials and the blood and sweat you went through to reach here.

OK that's-
Don't be silly x. you'll probably receive a good bred Pokemon If I ever get round to doing it.  Also you can tell your friends and family that you managed to win a video game tournament with probably less than 20 people.

Besides, battling with other members is fun, right? .. Right..?

Voice chat?
If agreed by both parties.

Can I upload my battles to YouTube or livestream or something like that.
If agreed between both parties.  Agreement must be observable so post here.

I don't see my question here and I've read through at least once.  Promise.  Can I ask it.
Yes.

Oh Good because I wanted to kno-

OH GOD SHUTTUP.

Ah whatever.  Feel free.

Happy Battling!

Gaming / Tembo the Badass Elephant
« on: March 12, 2015, 19:13 »
uh..

From news no-one expected, GameFreak (game makers of Pokemon whatever that is) is releasing a 2D platformer for PS4, Xbox one and PC called Tembo the Badass Elephant, published by SEGA.

Trailer here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_RusbvXV-g

I'm intrested! An elephant (which are lovely animals) dressed sort of like Rambo in a 2D platformer?  But this is the strangest news in gaming I've heard for a long time!

Gaming / Resident Evil HD
« on: February 10, 2015, 00:17 »
A re-release of a 12 year old game based on a 19 year old game, out on PS3/4 360, Xbox One and PC.    And it's wonderful.    I wasn't much into the old school RE games, my expreince started with Resident Evil 4 (which I total loved, still do love, and can go back to it any time and enjoy so much) so when fans complained that the series was out of touch with its roots,  I didn't really fully understand the compliants.

But playing it now (with the new, updated controls,) I can see where their coming from.  Whilst in RE4 the combat was at the forefront, this game, with it's limited ammo almost encrouges avoiding your enemies unless it's aboustely necessery.  Come across a tight corridor in the mansion you think you'll be re-entering? Do you take out the Zombie or try to avoid, bare in mind if you do decide to take it down and leave it for a while.. well.

I love the carefully crafted camera angles, and whilst the scene changing can be confusing at first, I still loved the atmosphere they crafted, with their frame scenes combind with the sound and music (or most of the time, lack of any noise) really makes for a unsettling atmosphere.  Most of the time I've watched my girlfriend play it together, but I still felt as much involved as I do when playing it myself.

Anyone else playing?  What do you think?

Whilst playing the game I noticed a lot of references to the original RS, both small and large, have you? Let's see what we found!  For me:

+ The game's opening is RS' original, same sprites, background and text before it pulls away to show that it's being played on the character's PokeNav.
+ 11 years is refenced a lot, a nod to the RS's release date in the west of 2003.
+A NPC in the PokeCentre asked you if you're suprised by Mauville's size and is seemingly amused you would be, in RS Mauville was much, much smaller.  It was a single road with a handful of houses, a gym and other buildings.
+In Mauville Hills there's a character who's telling you his repeating his line for when he gives Rock Smash to a trainer, a character in a house used to in Mauville used to give you Rock Smash.
+ an NPC in Verdanturf Town tells you that the town used to be known as the gateway for contests.  in RS, whilst the first contest hall the player will come across is in Slateport, they could only compete in the Verdanturf Town hall because it was the only hall that would allow begginer ranks whilst other halls had different ranks praticed there.
+ A Pokeblock machine is in the halls and an NPC tells you how they used to blend berries in a group of four people 'years ago'.
+ In the Safari Zone you'll find information that the owner used to charge enterance fees but after no-one would come he lifted the fees and made it free, in RS you was charged for enterance.
+ In Sea Mauville you can find a device on one of the shelves that has two screens and looks like what you're using now.  Somewhat breaking the fourth wall and refering to possibly the DS or Game and Watch.

Delta Epsiode:

Delta Episode seems to incoprate of a lot of Emerald elements, ones I've noticed:
+ Steven calls you up using an early version of PokeNav communication,  Emerald's PokeNav doubled as a phone.
+ Wallace's team when he rebattles you is the team he uses as Emerald Champion.
+ RS' Hoenn is referenced as a place where the Pokemon War never took place and some evoultions weren't discovered, some Pokemon in RS would be given future evoultions or mega evoultions and in ORAS are considered Hoenn Pokemon now. (Dusclopes, Dusknoir etc.)
+ The Battle at the Mossdeep rocket station is similar to the battle with Team Magma in Emerald.

(Well a month from a Europen-centric view, however, this is no reason why those who'll be receiving ORAS on the 21st cannot join in either!)

After years of speculation, debates, and examining anything that may be the slightest hint of oncoming remake of Ruby and Sapphire, ranging from NPCs from Hoenn to if you squint it kind of looks like it's saying RUBY AND SAPPHIRE REMAKING COMING, the games are almost upon us.

The purpose of this topic is to build hype to an awesome amount.  Everyday, I will post an element of RS, be it a scenario in the game, a Pokemon, an NPC, pre-release information, events, news or anything that relates to the game, and you can post your experience about it.  It can be as long or short as you like (as long as it follows rules of course.)

Come on, it'll be fun!

(NB: your definition of fun may differ massively from my own.)

TODAY IS...
TRENDY SAYINGS

on Dewford Island there was an interesting bunch of NPCs that would take obsessively about a phrase that could change yourself.  It was changed weekly automatically, and sometimes by trading records with friends you would also receive their 'trendy phrase'.  I was made from stock words such as Pokemon names, pronouns and move names.  I remember using the phase Cute Torchic, but when I went back this year with my girlfriend immaturity got the better of us and, well,  it was a lot less sweet than Cute Torchic.

I only really played R/S back in the day with my brother and my evetual-girlfriend Milia Maxwell as she's called on here so it was intresting to have phrases traded between us.

I hope this returns to ORAS, it made the world feel a bit more alive.

X and Y/OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire / Demo Impressions
« on: October 15, 2014, 22:36 »
Post them here!  Here's mine summerised up!

The Good!
+ Graphics are charmful, the expressions are cute, and gives it a lot of personallity, the Magma/Aqua look really good as well.
+ Music is good and faithful
+ Lots of easter eggs!  A small nod for old fans and a forshadowing for newer ones, raised a smile when one NPC was telling me about his Bike stamped with RYDLE RYDLE RYDLE RDLYE and the apperance of Gabby and Ty.
+ Really captures the feel of RS.
+  I really like the art work of the trainers you fight, a lot of them are very similar poses to their RS sprites.

The Bad
+ Mossdeep City turned into Lumiose City during the Magma/Aqua battle.  As in the background was clearly of the busy city of Lumiose City rather than the Island city of Mossdeep.  I hope that's a demo only thing because that really jarring.

But besides that, loved it!

At first I took a bit of a cautious view to Mega Evolutions, although now using a vairty of them in X/Y, I've come to appricate them as a sort of 'up grade' to current Pokemon without changing them too much.  There were a few Pokemon that seemed odd they weren't given mega evos, like Metagross, but it seems they were being saved for ORAS.

But what new Mega Evos would you like to see, or expect?

For one I think we'd see a Mega Camrupt and Sharpedo, X & Y used a Mega Evo on the Big Bad Team Leader's Pokemon team and within the game's theme of Mega Pokemon, it gave it an epic feel.  These two were Archie's and Maxie's signature Pokemon back in RSE, I'd be suprised if they didn't.    Although GameFreak could give them different Pokemon, I'd think a mega evo would be sutiable for these Pokemon.  On a personal note, I would love to see it.

Rayquaza  seems obivous, it's usually in the same bracket as Kyroge/Groudon.

Mega Dusknoir, maybe, it was always paired with Banette when it was Dusclops, but I felt Banette giving an Mega Evo was to make up for it not having an evolution whilst Dusclops did.

A few ones I'd like to see: Mega Salamence, Mega Dragonite, Mega Armaldo, Mega Wailord (oh please this would be so fantastic, please make it twice the size of reguler Wailord or something.)

One of the more overlooked things that RS did that other games haven't copied was to have bigger Pokedex entries for their Pokemon.  Because of the amount of text entries spanned two 'dex pages.  For example Metagross' entries in Ruby and Sapphire were:

Quote
Metagross has four brains in total. Combined, the four brains can breeze through difficult calculations faster than a supercomputer. This Pokémon can float in the air by tucking in its four legs.

Quote
Metagross is the result of two Metang achieving fusion. When hunting, this Pokémon pins the prey to the ground under its massive body. It then eats the helpless victim using the large mouth on its stomach.

Later entries were more condensed and read more like linked bullet points.   Imo don't flow as well.

Do you think they'd return, or would you like them to return?

I'm a bit lazy when EV training sweepers &  usually do 255/255 instead of 252/252/6 for an extra stat point,  so I noticed when trasferring my Heracross in the said manner & going to Super training that it wasn't fully trained & had attack & speed maxed out,  did a bit of HP and yay fully EV trained.

Am I right in thinking stats are maxed out at 252 rather then 255?  if so that is so useful.

X and Y/OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire / Stone question
« on: May 14, 2014, 20:38 »
(not Steven Stone,  that's Claire's area)

Hello PKMN.NET!  So I'm enjoying X for the first time & have caught a cool sword looking thing.  But I found cool looking sword thing will eventually need a dusk stone to evolve.  I don't mind,  but if they are a limited amount then I might have to reconsider my in game team, as I would like to keep my stones for my EV'd mon.   So  basically, are the evoultion stones limited, or is thefe a reliable way to get more.

Thank you for the help.

(New topic because I context is wider than just Nintendo's now.)

I was with those annoyed that Nintendo's servers for games were being shut down - but there seems to be another reason for it.  Gamespy who hosted these games as well as many others are closing down their servers in May.

Goodbye online GTA IV & RDR. :(

I probably should attempt to get that online stuff in Dragon Quest IX.  Bleh.

Random Randomness / Who are you people
« on: March 30, 2014, 15:36 »
Real life has taken it's heavy toll over the year, so I'm reguleted to semi-lurking statues on pkmn.net, and I notice a lot of new people.  that's a good thing so I'm not critising but I can't help feel this quote from the wise Grampa Simpson

I used to be with it.  Then they changed what 'it' was, now what I'm with isn't it and what 'it' is seems weird and scary to me.

The times -- they are changing!

(Not nescessey a bad thing of course.)

Its like Saved by the Bell the New Class, which had elements from the previoius series.

Random Randomness / Happy Birthday Claire!

It's Claire[fable]'s birthday today! probably best to avoid saying how old she is exactly, but nevertheless lets wish her a happy birthday!

Happy Birthday! as stated above.  Hope it's a good one.

..is that we don't have to learn two sets of names for Pokemon, names, and moves for conversation and stuff.   I love you Nintendo!

X and Y/OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire / Name meaning
« on: January 08, 2013, 20:54 »
y'know, speculation!

What do you think? probably plot wise, or even just a simple refer to the pokemo's shapes, but it's probably got story with that.

i dunno, maybe image people know this more about me, but isn't 3D on a X pitch or a Y pitch or something, if I haven't just dreamed this maybe it's just a refer to it being 3D.

i mean the logo colours are red and blue what 3D usually associated with.
