Why do the ghosts in Pac-man chase him?

And also, is Pac-man even a hero? In his game, he eats every pill in sight. He won't stop until every pill has been eaten. So does this mean what I think it means?

Pac-man is a drug addict, and nobody noticed!

There's nothing wrong with liking drugs.  Ghosts chase him cause they're an acid hallucination anyway, I thought this was a well documented fact.
