Sun and Moon / Re: Pokemon Sun and Moon Competitive Predictions
« on: November 22, 2016, 22:02 »
Pheromosa will be the first ban, it's currently breaking the metagame, forcing both Pheromosa and Aegislash on every team except stall, which still has to run Aegislash and Toxipex minimum to deal with her.

Welcome back weather wars with its new friend Terrain Wars. With more instant weather setters than ever, I expect Rain to dominate for a while until Drizzle + Swift Swim is banned on the same team again, then Sand and Sun will make their return. Hail is still not an amazing weather, due to Ice being a horrid defensive type.

Tapu Koko + Pelipper/Politoed + Raichu is a surprisingly deadly core that can wipe teams pretty easily with more support from the likes of Ferrothorn. Expect to see this a lot.

There's a lot to talk about this generation, and anything can happen. Once we weed out the obviously broken Pokemon we will start seeing trends form and this new meta evolve.

Tournaments / Kanto Classic Showdown Tournament!
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:55 »
I'm hosting a tournament for the Kanto Classic format. There will be a great reward for the winner, but before we get to that, here are the rules:

-Only Pokemon 001-149 are allowed to be used
-Singles 6v6 format
-No held items
-Only one Pokemon of each species is permitted per team
-Pokemon levels are set to 50 (Be sure to set this in the teambuilder and challenge with Kanto Classic format selected)
-Best 2/3 will determine the winner of each round

Now, for the reward, the winner will receive 3 prizes that I myself have hatched/Soft-Reset (If I win, it will go to whoever takes second place):

  • Shiny Naive Protean Froakie 31/31/31/31/29/31
  • Calm Heatran 30/x/31/31/31/31
  • Naive Cosplay Pikachu 31/30/31/30/31/30 HP Fire

Entrants:

Gaming / Re: What do you think of Smash 4?
« on: February 04, 2016, 07:14 »
Bayonetta and Corrin are out today!

After spending 5 hours play-testing with a friend that does competitive Smash, Corrin is actually really scary. The lance into the ground gives them so many options.

Bayonetta seems complicated, it's really hard to determine how good she is at the moment. I feel like it'll be a Ryu situation where no one knows how good they are until someone masters them and starts dominating with them (Trela), so we'll see.

Team Building / Re: Building a Monotype team
« on: February 01, 2016, 22:20 »
If you don't want to build a rain team specifically, I'd still suggest Specs Politoed. You don't have to build the team around rain at all, but having access to a boost in power for your STAB attacks is great, and Specs Politoed is self-sufficient. In any case, Politoed at the very least combats Mono-Fire/Ground/Rock/Ice that are running an opposing weather.

That said, if you're looking to include Suicune, it sounds like you're leaning toward defensive or bulky offense. Qwilfish is an odd choice, but it provides Spikes support, as well as Paralysis support and can Destiny Bond itself away before going down.

Ludicolo and Quagsire/Gastrodon are great choices for mitigating weakness to Grass and Electric, respectively. You could go with Lightningrod Seaking, but Seaking's pretty terrible.

What kind of set are you looking to use with Suicune? If you get a few Pokemon together that you know you want to use it'll be easier to make recommendations on how to finish the team.

Trades / Stop 'n Swap - Legends Shop
« on: February 01, 2016, 16:59 »
Hey there. I soft-reset for legendary Pokemon, as well as trade for them from people I know and trust. As I know most of you here, I thought I'd open this shop up. So here's the deal:

-I'm looking for legendary Pokemon that are not listed in this shop. I expect them to have good IVs, and what I've listed should give you an expectation of what I'll accept.
-All Pokemon in this shop will be KB/HB, which means they have the pentagon in their summary (which means they were captured/obtained in a generation 6 game). I expect the same from you if we setup a trade.
-All Pokemon are legitimate, to the best of my knowledge. If ever you're unsure, just ask for a tradeback, but anything with my ID is legitimate. I have no means or method to hack, nor do I think it's necessary in this generation, but things I've received in trades, however unlikely, might not be legitimate.
-I will need to find a cloner to clone most of these, though that isn't especially difficult as I have a few connections, and if all else fails, Pokemonshowdown has plenty of cloners

Without further adieu, here's what I've got to offer:

Suicune: 30/x/31/31/31/31 Bold
Latias: 31/x/30/31/31/31 Bold
Groudon: 31/31/31/31/31/31 Impish
Rayquaza: 30/31/31/31/31/31 Naive Shiny
Azelf: 31/31/29/31/27/31 Timid
Dialga: 30/x/31/31/31/31 Modest
Heatran: 30/x/31/31/31/31 Calm
Cresselia:: 31/x/31/31/31/31 Bold
Shaymin: 31/31/31/31/31/31 Timid
Terrakion: 31/31/29/x/31/31 Jolly
Landorus: 31/30/31/x/31/31 Jolly
Landorus: 31/31/31/x/31/28 Impish
Xerneas: 31/x/31/30/30/31 Timid HP Ground
Xerneas: 31/x/31/31/26/31 Modest shiny
Yveltal: 31/x/31/31/31/31 Timid
Yveltal: 31/31/31/31/31/31 Mild
Zygarde: 31/31/31/31/31/31 Adamant
Diancie: 31/30/31/30/31/30 Naive HP Fire
Hoopa: 31/31/25/30/27/31 Hasty

26
I'll be SRing for all of these, granted I get the time to go out to get them. A little while back I SR'd for Hoopa, ended up with 31/31/25/30/27/31 Hasty Hoopa, which is pretty darn great for Hoopa-Unbound. If you SR for different natures and get good IVs, we might be able to setup some clone trading. Here's what I'll be going for:

Mew: Careful
Celebi: Bold (Unless they're generous enough to pack in Nasty Plot)
Jirachi: Jolly
Darkrai: Timid
Manaphy: Timid
Shaymin: Timid
Arceus: Jolly
Victini: Depends on what moves it has
Keldeo: Timid
Genesect: Naive

I'll post here with each one as I SR it, and update this post with IVs and such.

Team Building / Re: Trying to get back into battling [RMT]

Mega Venusaur runs 232 HP / 252 Sp. Attack / 4 Sp. Defense / 20 Speed to ensure it outspeeds Azumarill and has the most bulk possible, if you're going that route.

Team Building / Kanto Classic Tournament Discussion
« on: January 31, 2016, 14:24 »
So after talking to Tim about the upcoming Gen 6 battle tournament, we began discussing what we thought would be common threats in this metagame. So if you didn't know, here's what this tournament's rules are:

-Only Pokemon listed from 001-149 are eligible for use
-No items may be held by any Pokemon
-Singles Battles, 6v6

All entrants get a Dragonite that knows Barrier, a move that, to this point, only Lance has managed to hack onto Dragonite.

So with that out of the way, here's what I think will be threats to watch out for:

Clefable is undeniably the best Fairy type this metagame has to offer. It is the only Pokemon in the metagame to get Unaware, making it a full stop to most setup sweepers, most notably Dragon Dance Dragonite. I've been running Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Moonlight, and Stealth Rock on it, but there's a lot it can do.

This is the main reason Clefable is necessary on every team. One Shell Smash is basically a win condition most of the time. If you can find a way to remove the opposing Clefable and Thick Fat Snorlax, Cloyster just needs a single turn to Shell Smash, then sweep with Icicle Spear, Rock Blast and Hydro Pump/Ice Shard.

Unlike R/B/Y, Machamp actually has usable Fighting type attacks now, and Machamp could see a fair bit of use this time around. Chansey's going to be popular as a special sponge, and Machamp can put pressure on her immediately. It can even go the Guts route with RestTalk to deal with a potential Toxic. Speaking of Chansey...

Takes special hits. All the special hits. Spreads status, has the ability to cure the entire team of status, Chansey's going to be popular.

Only thing immune to Fighting, Gengar also gets the ability to deal Super Effective STAB damage to Psychics. Unfortunately, he also takes Super Effective STAB damage from Psychics, and is outsped by the two most popular, Starmie and Alakazam. Gengar is one of a few Pokemon that puts a ton of pressure on Clefable immediately, and can usually net a free Sub just by switching into her.

Alakazam is super strong, but suffers from a mediocre movepool, and doesn't have Special as one stat anymore, making it far more frail than it was back in RBY. Even so, it's got great Speed and puts on pressure immediately, which can be taken advantage of with Substitute on an expected switch.

CurseLax could be a really good end-game sweeper. Snorlax could also act as a potent revenge-killer, especially given his access to Pursuit. Snorlax has a lot of options, a lot of bulk, and a lot of power.

Nidoking gets all kinds of options, ranging from fully physical, to special, to mixed. Sucker Punch is an especially good option in this metagame for baiting Psychic types into attacking it and getting the jump on them. Sludge Wave/Poison Jab pressures Clefable, Ice Beam hits Dragonite, Thunderbolt has great coverage, Earth Power/Earthquake are powerful STABs, Nidoking really has it all.

Starmie has Hydro Pump, Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Recover, not to mention Rapid Spin support if you feel your team needs it, while sitting on a fantastic 115 base Speed stat and has more than enough Sp. Attack to deal out loads of damage.

Aerodactyl is very fast and has good offensive and support options, including Stone Edge, Aerial Ace (important for those damn Minimize Clefable), Earthquake, Crunch, Taunt, Stealth Rock, and Tailwind, among a few others.

Jolteon is just as fast, and has really great STAB in Thunderbolt and Volt Switch, allowing it to act as a pivot which isn't very common in this metagame. Hidden Power Ice and Shadow Ball round out coverage, but there's room for some interesting support options in Wish and Yawn if you choose.

Ninetales is the only auto-weather setter in this format, which makes it worth watching out for. It doesn't necessarily need a team built around it, but it can pair with Chlorophyll Venusaur for a good combo. A weakness to Stealth Rock holds it back a bit, but Sun boosted Fire Blasts or Overheats hit very hard, and it even has Psyshock to deal decent damage to Chansey.

Omastar gets Shell Smash, and has fantastic special attacking options in Hydro Pump, Ice Beam and AncientPower to sweep. Rain Dance is a great option instead of Shell Smash to boost your Speed and damage output without lowering your defenses.

Dragonite gets Dragon Dance and has the highest base Attack of all RBY Pokemon iirc, so that in itself is threatening. It even has Iron Head to chip away at Clefable, but I think Clefable will be holding Dragonite back from being truly dominant. You can also go fully special on a Rain team with options in Hurricane, Thunder, Draco Meteor, Agility, hell it can even set Rain Dance.

Edit: Iron Head does about 40%. This thing is still pretty terrifying, even if you have Unaware Clefable.

Slowbro has Regenerator and has great physical bulk, and the good Psychic typing for this metagame. Paralysis support through Thunder Wave aids the team, and Scald pressures many switch-ins. Reliable recovery in Slack Off too.

DDDos has potential, but same as Dragonite, Clefable is holding it back. Its STAB is also more easily resisted by many Pokemon, and the popularity of Thunderbolt makes this a bit of a risky choice.

Moltres gets access to Hurricane, which strangely makes it a decent choice for a Rain team, which can be pretty decent. It can also run Sunny Day and Fire Blast alongside Hurricane and just change the weather whenever it's convenient to do so.

So what are your thoughts? Who else could be a major player in this weird metagame? What will you be using?

Team Building / Re: Trying to get back into battling [RMT]
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:43 »
Heyo JSM! Let's take a look here!

Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard
- Ice Punch
- Low Kick

Seems fine. Consider Life Orb on this if you find yourself annoyed by entry hazard damage racking up from switching a lot. Icicle Crash is also an option over Ice Punch for a bit more power, but that's down to preference.

Celebi @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 156 Def / 84 SpD / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Giga Drain
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

This seems fine I guess, but I've always found Celebi sounds better on paper than it ends up being. This does what it needs to do, but Celebi has so many drawbacks; weakness to Pursuit, no offensive presence on non-NP sets, easily walled. This set seems fine for what it does, but if you find Celebi under-performing, think about finding a replacement.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Toxic

One thing that competitive battlers need to win is consistency, and while this does beat some would-be counters, it's very inconsistent. I can't sing the praises of specially defensive Heatran enough, really. Lava Plume is such a good move to mount pressure on the opposing team. If you're finding this works, by all means stick to it, but I have a feeling that this is very hit-or-miss.

Keldeo @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Icy Wind
- Hydro Pump

Looks good

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Foul Play

Set looks fine

Landorus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

Like this set in particular, and somewhat ironically, this finds time to setup on opposing defensive Landorus-T I'd imagine.

Okay, so comments about the sets themselves in bold.

As for the team as a whole, I noticed something: You have a rather noticeable weakness to Azumarill. Every single thing on your team is frightened of it to an extent; Weavile, Keldeo and Sableye won't enjoy Play Rough, Celebi can't switch in for fear of Knock Off, Heatran and Lando-T fear Waterfall/Aqua Jet.

I'd strongly suggest Mega Venusaur > Mega Sableye, and finding a replacement for Celebi as well. Mega Venusaur hard counters Azumarill, and pretty much does what Celebi is doing, but mostly better. Just need to find a SR user.

All this said, I haven't been into ORAS competitive for a long time, so maybe everything I'm saying is useless at this point lol

Team Building / Re: Building a Monotype team
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:28 »
Mono Water is still a pretty great way to go. You get Politoed, Ludicolo, Kabutops, Rotom-Wash, Manaphy, Keldeo, Azumarill, Crawdaunt, and Lord Helix himself. There's a lot of flexibility there, and as long as you can keep Rain up, you have a significant edge against many other mono-type teams.

Flying is great because it has so many secondary type members that it becomes a bit of a hodge-podge team, but it does have the obvious Stealth Rock hindrances on many members.

Mono-Fairy is decent in Monotype, due to lack of common weaknesses and diversity, but there aren't that many good Fairy types around to make a team out of. Mega Gardevoir, Clefable, Azumarill, Klefki, Sylveon, Mega Diancie, Togekiss, maybe Whimsicott. It'd struggle to be a cohesive team I think, though it could work with Klefki providing hazards and paralysis support to lead the match I guess. I don't think this type is the way to go.

Grass I'm unsure about. It doesn't have enough members that cover its weaknesses, especially to Flying.

I'd be more willing to help construct if you had a type picked out specifically. Steel is generally a great choice, Ground can be good, Psychic has a lot of options. Water, as I said before, has an abundance of choices.
