Cerulean City
A mysterious, blue aura surrounds it.

Its amazing what being a 32x32 pixel sprite does to your
complexion. |

Nugget Bridge |
There isn't much you can do here yet. The way out to Route 5 is blocked off, and the only way to go right now is Route 24. There is a gym here as well. In one house, you get more information about the badges. If you leave through the backdoor, there is a hidden Rare Candy to the right. There's a very expensive bike in the town, which you won't be able to get yet. Go to the house next to the Pokecentre first. You can trade a Poliwhirl for a Jynx here in RBY, so remember to keep a seperate one when you find it - this is the only place to get it. The place is more profitable in Yellow. Be sure to have Pikachu with you, and a free slot on your team. If Pikachu is happy enough (try to feed it a potion while it has full health if it isn't yet), you will get a Bulbasaur! After that, go to the Gym.

This isn't a very difficult battle. If you started with Bulbasaur, or, in Yellow, got it in the nearby house, it'll sweep through (watch out for Goldeen's peck!), and a caught or received Pikachu will do the same. On the other hand, Charmander or Geodude will easily be killed by the water attacks here, so it's best if you don't use them here. Pokemon that don't have super-effective attacks will get you through the first trainers and past Staryu as well, however, Starmie's bubblebeam is tough at this stage of the game.
After you defeat Misty, you get the Cascadebadge, which makes Pokemon up to :L30 obey, and allows you to use Cut at any time. You also get TM11, Bubblebeam. After that, leave Cerulean City through the Northern path. You will be challenged by your Rival again.

You have fought all of these before, and the battle therefore shouldn't be too difficult.

First of all, you will battle a number of trainers here. In the end a man will give you a nugget as a reward, but after you refuse to join Team Rocket, he attacks you too. There is also one trainer in the grass to the west. None of these should be too hard to beat. Catch two Abras here in Red and Blue, so that you can trade one for a Mr Mime later on, get a Grass Pokemon here if you don't have one (it could also be handy if you go here before beating Misty), they will serve you well for a while, and (perhaps) catch a Venonat for Pokedex completion. Also get TM45, Psywave here. In Yellow, a boy will also give you a Charmander.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do NOT battle this trainer if you want to catch a wild Mew later on! This is the trainer facing up, standing in front of two trees. Go past the Lass instead.

First of all, don't forget - Do NOT battle the second youngster, the one with the Slowpoke, if you want to get a legal Mew. If you get the Jr Trainer M to challenge you while he walks away, you can get TM19, Seismic Toss, without having to use Cut. The Pokemon here are basically the same as on the previous one, so I won't comment on them. Beat the other trainers, and enter the house. You will see a Pokemon standing there, who asks you to help him out to turn him back to human. He goes in the machine. Walk to the computer, and use it, and Bill will walk out. He will then give you the SS Ticket. Return to Cerulean City. You can now go through the house in front of which a policeperson was standing. Battle the rocket standing behind the house.

His Drowzee can be difficult with the Hypnosis attacks. Try to defeat before your Pokemon is sleeping. After you beat him, you get TM28 Dig. You can't go East to Route 9 yet, so go to..
Route 5
The only interesting feature of this route is the daycare. For every step you take here, your Pokemon gains one experience point. You will need to pay 100 for every level your Pokemon gains, plus 100 extra. Further, catch an Abra (will evolve to one of the best Psychics in the game), together with whatever other Pokemon you don't have yet. You can't get through the guardhouse, so enter the small house to the site, and follow the path there. Get out on the other end. You can trade a Nidoran M for a Nidoran F here in Red and Blue, Cubone for Machoke in Yellow

Battle the trainers here. You will find no new Pokémon here, although in Yellow you can easily get Psyduck here later
