Route 16

First of all, before heading through the route house, cut the bush to go up (you'll find long grass here as well), and go west through the building. In the house here, you can get the easy HM02, Fly!

Before you'll can get to any of these trainers, you'll have to beat a Pokemon first. Bring a lot of Great Balls, they could come in handy. There's a wild Snorlax blocking your way. Playing the Pokeflute will wake him up. He'll immediately attack, and you'll have to catch or defeat him. If you don't get him now (he's very tough), you'll get a second chance when going around the other way, with better Pokeballs as well. Don't use the Masterball now - it's not worth it.

You can catch a Doduo here if you want to. Could be worse, but nothing special. You'll need a bike to pass the route house here. The trainers will probably be new to you - bikers that use mainly Poison Pokemon, and Cueballs with mostly fighting ones. If you've got a good Psychic Pokemon, you'll race through here. Go down for the next route.

If you don't press A, you'll constantly drive down this road. Which can be annoying when you're trying to catch Ponyta here in Yellow (you can only find it here). Nothing special here as far as trainers are concerned. Just more of the same as on Route 16.

There's a couple of birdkeepers here. They're just as vulnerable to Electric attacks as any others, so it shouldn't be hard. After beating them, you'll arrive in Fuchsia City. There's a lot to do here, but we'll get to that later. First, buy a lot of Ultra Balls, we've got a rare Psychic kitten to catch.

Mew

First, let's prepare. Teach one of your Pokemon the move Fly through HM. Make sure you've got a number of low-level Pokemon so that they won't faint Mew. Step in front of the door to the Underground Path that I've mentioned before. Save now, because it's your last chance. Step down, and IMMEDIATELY press start. The start menu should pop up. Get your Pokemon to fly away to Cerulean City. The Gambler should see you as you fly away. When you arrive in Cerulean City, go north to the youngster with the Slowpoke. Let him battle you (don't talk to him yourself - this is important!), and defeat the Slowpoke. Fly to Lavender Town, and go back to Route 8. Mew should now appear at level 7, and fight you. Good luck!

Let's go to Route 12 now.

Before you can continue further, you'll bump into a Snorlax here. Fight it, try to catch it, and move on.

These trainers are a fair bit harder, although they should be beatable by now. There's an Iron behind the cuttable bush. Get a Venonat here in RB (or not, it's not that good a Pokemon), and a Slowpoke and Farfetch'd in Yellow. You'll need Cut to reach the grass again. In the house here, you can get a Super Rod, the best in the game, and if you've followed this walkthrough, you'll have gotten it before the second-best rod. Wee.
