Lots of trainers, most of them avoidable. When you've got Cut, you can get TM20, Rage, by going up the top ledge. If you've caught 50 Pokemon, you can get an Exp share at the top of the route house.
Fuchsia City
We're finally here, and don't worry, things will be speeding up quite a bit here. First of all, at the routehouse at Route 18, you can trade a Pokemon here. In Red and Blue, you can trade an Abra for Lickitung (your only chance to get one), and in Yellow, trade a Tangela for a Parasect. No, that's indeed not very useful. There are two major things here, the Safari Zone and the Gym, which we'll both get to later. First, go to the gropu op houses to the southeast of the town. In the left, you'll find the Safari Zone Warden, but you can't understand him. More on that later. In the right one, you can get a Good Rod. Rather useless now that we've already got a Super Rod, but at least it's something.
Time to go fishing for a few Pokemon we can't catch otherwise. You can fish for Poliwag in Pallet Town, Viridian City and Route 22. Catch a Goldeen in most places. Horsea's can be found on Route 19, 20 and 21, as well as Cinnabar Island and the Seafoam Islands - you'll reach those later. In Red, catch Krabby on Route 12, 13, and 17. In Yellow, get Shellder on Route 19, 20 and 21.
Now, first of all, let's go and beat the gym.

The poison types in this gym can be beaten by psychic and ground attacks. The psychics are a bit more work (but probably not after beating Sabrina). Congratulations with your next badge! Only two more left.
I'll go through this area by area, listing items, and giving the shortest route to two important items that you must pick up to continue the game. I suggest you first pick these two up, and only catch Pokemon and pick up other items after you've done this. The time you've got left is actually measured in steps, and you've only got a limited number of steps you can make; backtracking and stuff like that only makes sure you have to run to get there faster. By fishing in any of the water here with a Super Rod, you can get a Dratini.
First, the entrance. Rhyhorn, Exeggcute, Scyther, Pinsir, and Tangela can only be caught here in these versions. You can't reach any items here yet. For now, go through the top right exit (the only one).
In Red and Blue, get a Kangaskhan, in Yellow, a Tauros. The fastest way to the next area is to go up the first stairs, go left, and down the stairs, walk around the rock and up. Go up the next rock, and down on the other side to the tree, and walk around the rock to the left to leave for the next area. You'll walk past TM37, Max Potion and Full Restore that way. Higher up on the first rock is a Carbos.
To leave here as soon as possible: Go past the first stairs, and go up the second rock, and go down the stairs to the left. Walk up, right, then around the bushes to the left, and then down again. You'll walk past TM40 and Protein. Catch a new Kangaskhan and Pinsir in Yellow, or Tauros in Red and Blue. You can reach the other part of Area 3 by taking the exit you find after going over the first rock.
When you walk down hear, you can immediately pick up the Gold Teeth (required for the plot!) go left, and enter the house to get HM03, Surf! You've now got what you must have, feel free to walk around and catch Pokemon. In this part of area 3, you can get TM32, a must-have (Double Team). When entering the area through the other entrance, you can get a Max Revive and a Max Potion.
Now that you've got the Gold Teeth, you can take them to the Warden, who will give you HM04, Strength, in exchange. Push aside the boulder to get a Rare Candy.
Teach both to a Pokemon. Surfing anywhere will allow you to catch Tentacool. In Celadon City, you can now talk to the man that is behind the lake in the middle of the city. On Route 12, you can reach TM16. I'll get to the Power Plant later when we're going to catch all the legendary birds. We can now go to Cinnabar City two ways: By surfing south from Fuchsia City, through Route 19, the Seafoam Islands and Route 20. Or we'll take the easier way, and go to Route 21. To make sure you don't miss out any of the 'fun' (read as boring) Surf routes, I'll first discuss Route 19 (up to the Seafoam Islands), then we'll fly to Route 21 and go down there to Cinnabar. We'll then go east from there for the remainder of Route 20. The Seafoam Islands will be discussed after beating Cinnabar, when we'll go catch the first two legendary birds. Prepare your electrics, you're going to be sick of the Tentacools after we're done here..
