Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Features: Helpful Gameplay Upgrades |

Everything in RS seems new at first, but of course, it still has the heart of those quirky Red and Blue versions that thrilled gameplayers in the late nineties. As you'd expect, though, many additions have been made to make things easier. Let's take a look at some of them.

RUNNING SHOES

It's always tiresome when you don't have a bike and want to find wild Pokémon quickly. Fortunately, the answer is given very early on in the game. When you earn the running shoes, holding down B will speed you up. This is very useful for running from building to building. After all, it's a pointless to get on your bike to move five tiles. The shoes are always ready, though. Like the bike, however, they are banned in most buildings. Fortunately, trying to run in a building will not cause Oak's omnipresent voice to tell you off.

FISHING

This makes the game more challenging. In RS, if you get a bite, you have to tap A repeatedly to reel it in; much like in Zelda: Link's Awakening. It makes it all the more annoying when you find that you've wasted time hooking a Magikarp.

STATS

Your Pokémon has just raised a level. Your Attack is now 48! Brilliant! Or is it? What was your Attack BEFORE the level-up? There was no way to tell in RBYGSC. RS solves the problem, though. Before showing you the new stats, it tells you how many points have been added. It also shows you your new HP in the window, which wasn't done in the first six games. Also, the window that shows new stats pops up at the TOP of the screen instead of hiding the Pokémon's status. This means you can see HP at the same time, which can be useful.

MOVES

It's happened to everyone. Your Pokémon wants to learn a move, but already knows four. Do you want to learn the new move? If so, which move do you forget?

RS to the rescue! You can now check each of the four moves' details as well as the NEW move's details. You can compare damage, accuracies, descriptions and types before deciding whether or not you want to learn a new move. Result!

PAST POKéMON

RS cannot link to past games, as we've known for months. However, that does not mean all 251 old Pokémon can be caught in RS. Far from it. While certain old creatures such as Marill, Zubat, Machop, Geodude and Magikarp can be seen in the game, the vast majority of them are no longer present. There may be a way of trading from old versions in the future, though, so don't give up hope yet.

EVOLUTION

An integral part of the games. In RS, evolution lasts slightly longer, giving you more of a chance to cancel with B if you wish. Also, Pokémon now glow white before evolution, just like in the animé. It looks cooler too.

THE PC

Bill's PC and your PC are both back and ready to store your monsters and items! However, there doesn't seem to be a Pokédex Rating system like Oak's PC in RBYGSC. The Mail system from GSC is also absent. Bill's PC still contains 14 boxes, and the system looks much cooler - you can see all your Pokémon in each box in one go. Moving them now looks like you're picking them up.

DETAILS

Reflections, puddles, different textures, weather effects, moving coastlines, footprints and many more small details make RS a beautiful game to play.
