Route 102/Petalbrg City

This time when you reach Kotaki Town, head left onto route 102, where you'll be faced with several trainers to battle. You'll soon come to Petalbrg City. There's very little to do here at the moment, although the store will sell you Pokéballs. This city does have a gym, but you won't be able to battle in it, until you have 4 badges. Continue west and you'll come to a small beach. There are some trainers to battle here, but take special note of the boat and the small house next to it, you'll need to come back here later. From here, head north into Petalbrg Forest.

Petalbrg Forest/Route 104

There are a few trainers here, but your main goal is to head north. You'll meet your first member of Team Magma or Team Aqua (called Team M/A from now on in the guide) who is surprisingly easy to defeat. Once you're past, you'll be on route 104, again with very little to do put head north to your next destination, Rustboro City.

Rustboro City/Route 116

This posh looking city is the location of the first gym you'll battle in. Before you burst into the doors demanding a match, however, you should go to a small house in the south western part of town, in which you'll receive HM01 Cut. This will be useful later. The Gym Leader, Roxanne, uses only 2 Pokémon, one is a Nosepass, so be prepared. Once defeated, you will receive the Stone Badge. After a quick trip to the Pokémon Center, head north once more.

Just before you leave the city, you should see a distressed man on your right who you should talk to. You'll learn of some trouble being caused by Team M/A, and so you should head east until you reach a misty cave. Inside you'll find the member of Team M/A again, who has stolen an old man's Wingull. Again, once defeated, the member will leave, allowing the old man to collect his Pokémon. On returning to the city, the distressed man from early will meet you, and take you to the mayor. After a short talk, you'll be given the Pokémon Navigator, which is similar to the Pokégear, although with new features, such as an improved map, and a database of all the trainers you've encountered. Remember the boat and the house just before Petalbrg Forest? It's time to head back there...
