Now you may have come across something in the Pokémon games called Natures, and wondered what they actually do. For each nature, you'll find that they either have an effect on the stats of the Pokémon, such as Hasty, or they'll have no effect, such as Hardy. The mechanics behind them are fairly simple, actually. Below is a table, colour coded to resemble how they're displayed in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Nature | Raise Stat | Lowers Stat | Liked Berry | Disliked Berry |
---|---|---|---|---|
Adamant | Attack | Special Attack | Spicy | Dry |
Bashful | No Change | No Change | None Specific | None Specific |
Bold | Defense | Attack | Sour | Spicy |
Brave | Attack | Speed | Spicy | Sweet |
Calm | Special Defense | Attack | Bitter | Spicy |
Careful | Special Defense | Special Attack | Bitter | Dry |
Docile | No Change | No Change | None Specific | None Specific |
Gentle | Special Defense | Defense | Bitter | Sour |
Hardy | No Change | No Change | None Specific | None Specific |
Hasty | Speed | Defense | Sweet | Sour |
Impish | Defense | Special Attack | Sour | Dry |
Jolly | Speed | Special Attack | Sweet | Dry |
Lax | Defense | Special Defense | Sour | Bitter |
Lonely | Attack | Defense | Spicy | Sour |
Mild | Special Attack | Defense | Dry | Sour |
Modest | Special Attack | Attack | Dry | Spicy |
Naive | Speed | Special Defense | Sweet | Bitter |
Naughty | Attack | Special Defense | Spicy | Bitter |
Quiet | Special Attack | Speed | Dry | Sweet |
Quirky | No Change | No Change | None Specific | None Specific |
Rash | Special Attack | Special Defense | Dry | Bitter |
Relaxed | Defense | Speed | Sour | Sweet |
Sassy | Special Defense | Speed | Bitter | Sweet |
Serious | No Change | No Change | None Specific | None Specific |
Timid | Speed | Attack | >Sweet | Spicy |
Should a nature affect your stats, you'll find that it'll increase the relevant stat by 10% of what it normally would be, and reduce the relevant stat by 10% of what it normally would be. So, for instance, you've got a Salamence that'd have 300 Attack with a Hardy nature, if it had an Adamant nature it'd have 330 Attack instead. Quite the increase.
You may also notice the columns regarding Berries. Should you give a Pokémon a Pokéblock or a Poffin that it likes, you'll find that it'll experience a sharper increase in that stat when fed the Block/Poffin. Similarly, if you feed a Pokémon a Pokéblock/Poffin that's typing is what it dislikes, you'll see the growth isn't as impressive as normal.
