Pokémon Trainer

The Pokémon Trainer. The hero of our tales and owner of Pokémon. Yes. And this guy appears to have three to choose from. "That's not very fair!" I hear you cry. But fret not, he can only use one at a time.. and so can you! You can choose between Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard while the Pokémon Trainer runs around in the background like a looney. (Yeah, he does no fighting, lazy boy.) They're all different in their playstyles and they go in a continuous cycle when you use their Down Special move to the next Pokémon. The cycle goes: Squirtle -> Ivysaur -> Charizard -> Squirtle, again and again. Also, be careful to not just use one of them. The Pokémon will get tired as the battle grows on and you'll do progressively weaker damage to your opponent. So keep things balanced!

As there are three Pokémon to choose from I'm going to list their super special moves separately in their own sections. So first I think we should start with #007, Squirtle!

Squirtle

Squirtle is a turtle Pokémon (according to the Dex, anyway. It's always a tortoise in my eyes). And being a turtle, it naturally shoots water at things. Because y'know, that's what they do. Apparently. So Squirtle's attacks are focussed on water that appears out of nowhere and the tail and shell it has.

Squirtle has a number of different special attacks it can unleash on its enemies with the lovely "B" button on a GameCube controller and also the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo. Or for those new hip players, the "2" button on the Wii Remote.

Special Moves
Standard BWater Gun
Up BWaterfall
Side BWithdraw
Down BPokémon Change
Final SmashTriple Finish

Note: To perform the Final Smash, you must first have the Smash Ball (you will be glowing if you've smashed it, you have to attack it until it has smashed). You then press your equivalent "B" button.

Squirtle is fast (in terms of attack speed). Use that to your advantage. Its Up Smash is powerful, but is probably the slowest move at its arsenal. Squirtle's running speed isn't that great, but you can make up for that using Withdraw to scuttle across the stage (being careful not to fall off while doing so).

Ivysaur

Ivysaur is a plant dinosaur thing. It has a flower sprouting from its bulb on its back and walks on all fours. Given that it's part plant, it gives it control over its vines, spores and any seeds it might have. So these are reflected by its moves.

Ivysaur, like any other character in the game has some special moves that it can use using the equivalent "B" button your controller set uses. Here's a list of those moves:

Special Moves
Standard BBullet Seed
Up BVine Whip
Side BRazor Leaf
Down BPokémon Change
Final SmashTriple Finish

Ivysaur is possibly the slowest out of the three for attacking. Because it's a quadroped (as the only one in the game), it doesn't run that fast when compared with the other characters. However, Ivysaur makes up for this with a mean Up Smash, Up Aerial move (it actually forces you down) and Down Aerial. Its Down Smash and Side Smash are rather average, but still do some decent damage. Ivysaur also uses Vine Whip for a tether recovery similar to Olimar and his Pikmin.

If it's possible, try to lure an opponent into a Bullet Seed. This racks up damage incredibly fast if they don't know how to get out of it. It means that you can score a crucial KO very fast if they're already highly damaged.

Charizard

Charizard is by far the coolest lizard Pokémon ever. Well not really, but it's pretty cool nontheless. Charizard can breath fire, has incredible strength and has a flame on its tail. Just how cool is that! (Not very, considering it's a fire type. Ba-dum-tsh!) Charizard also has wings, so it can make use of the glide function in the game. Its wings also means it gets a number of jumps more than other characters in the game.

Being a Fire Pokémon able to make use of both the physical and special attack stats, Charizard's attacks are based around either its fire attacks or pure strength. These attacks are reflected in its special moves:

Special Moves
Standard BFlamethrower
Up BFly
Side BRock Smash
Down BPokémon Change
Final SmashTriple Finish

Charizard has slow attacks, but high damage. Charizard also has a pretty fast 'running' speed (he glides along). Making full use of Charizard is hard to do, generally. There's quite a bit of lag with his moves (especially Rock Smash) but you can reap the benefits if you take advantage of his aerial control. Due to the fact he's got wings, you can use him to glide and attack, use multiple jumps to psyche out an opponent or just control the air. Flamethrower will give continuous damage until it runs out of flare, so don't hold it for too long. Maybe enough to give you some breathing space to follow up with a Smash Attack.

General Tips:

Use Smash Attacks - Since Brawl is a fighting game where the aim is to knock your opponent off the screen, you should focus on racking up damage quickly then unleashing a Smash Attack on your opponent. Smash Attacks have a lot of knockback, sending your opponent quite far. There are three different Smash Attacks at the Pokémon's roster: Side Smash, Up Smash and Down Smash. Their Side Smash (smash (hard) left/right and A on a GameCube controller) are subjective to their species and their size. Charizard deals the most damage and knockback with his, but Squirtle's are faster. The longer you charge them, the harder you hit them and send the opponent flying sideways.
Make use of recovery! - If you are sent off the stage, try to get back! All of the Pokémon's Up B attacks are vertical recovery moves. Squirtle's Waterfall allows it to travel up a waterfall (that does indeed come out of nowhere, Pokémon-style) to try and get back on the stage. Squirtle's Withdraw (Side Special) is also especially useful for getting back to the stage if knocked to the side and it goes horizontal. Be sure you have enough height before you do it though!
Ivysaur's Vine Whip is a little different. You must be below the ledge that you're trying to get back onto and not too far down from it. The plus of this is, though, that you grab the ledge and dangle from it, allowing you to pull yourself up to it rather quickly. It will take a while to master Ivysaur's recovery but it will be helpful.
Charizard's Fly allows him to travel upwards with a tilt in the left or right direction you were facing when you used it. However, Charizard also has several jumps you can make use of and then glide (by holding your jump button) to go in the horizontal direction you need. Gliding can get you far, but you will need to control it well. It will take a lot of practice.
Switch Pokémon often - the Pokémon grow tired due to fatigue if you keep them out too long, keep the play balanced by switching them out with your Down Special move to keep them fresh. This means you'll be doing good damage rather than it fading after a while.
Don't rely on Charizard - while Charizard may be strong, he's slow because of his moves. They take a while to power up (Ivysaur also has this problem). Squirtle is fast with its moves, but can rack up damage fast due to this. But remember the tip above, don't stay out with the same one for too long.

Squirtle is definitely the best of the three. Using standard 3 stock matches, you should just use one Pokemon per stock usually. PT is my main, and I know how to use him with decent success, although I have no Wi-Fi, and hardly get to challenge anyone...

Oh, and Ivysaur's recovery sucks, due to edge-hogging. Just saying.

Quite a few recoveries are screwed by edge-hogging. There's not much to say about it.

I like using ivysaur in the home run thing. I use his bullet seed while my brother jumps up and hits it down. We rack up them damage points on that punching bag! then (fwoosh!) Home run! *makes crowd cheering noise*

I think Ivsaur is the best.
