We enter the episode with Ash and his friends continuing on their journey to Blackthorn City. Ash says that he thinks Blackthorn will be right over the hill they're walking on but... it's just more trees. Ash is disappointed and Brock takes out his guide and according to the map, they're lost. Misty gets all agitated and upset and Ash gets her to calm down.

Then two familiar people in suits and bowties appear. One is a girl with flaming red hair and the other, a boy, has blue hair. They say that when a Pikachu gets lost it loses its energy and that Ash needs to strap his Pikachu into this special machine chair to restore its lost energy. So Ash puts his Pikachu into the special machine and straps on the seatbelt. The two people jump into their Meowth balloon and introduce themselves as Team Rocket, ripping their costumes off to reveal Team Rocket uniforms. They take off, with the machine hanging from the basket of the balloon.

Ash tells Pikachu to give them a Thunderbolt, but when he does, the machine sucks up his electrical energy. Team Rocket laughs when Ash says to stop it. To that they answer that Ash has to give up all of his Pokémon or they'll drain Pikachu like a battery. Ash tells Pikachu to give them his best Thunderbolt.

The meter on the machine keeps going up until it can't hold any more energy and it explodes, freeing Pikachu and sending Team Rocket flying through the air. Once again, Ash and his friends have saved the day.

But, because so much energy was drained from him, Pikachu is tired and weak now. And there isn't a Pokémon Center in sight. All seems hopeless.

But a girl named Krystal comes up to them and tells them that there's a place not far from here where Pikachu can recooperate. She also tells them that it must be kept a secret.

While they're walking up a hill, they see an Electabuzz and a Raichu. They ask Krystal what they're doing here too. She tells them that they're going to the same place as Pikachu, which makes Ash wonder why they were doing this just for Pikachu.

When they reach the top of the mountain, they see a lake with lots of different electric Pokémon resting in it. Krystal puts Pikachu in the water. Small sparks surround the little Pokémon and soon he feels refreshed and recharged. Ash and his friends wonder why there is a lake on the top of a hill and how it recharges electric Pokémon.

Krystal takes them in a boat to the middle of the lake. They notice a glow here. She opens a panel in the bottom of her boat, and they see a crystal on top of an altar. The crystal glows very brightly. They wonder how it could have gotten in the middle of a lake. They also think of what might happen if the crystal got into the wrong hands.

What they don't know is that Team Rocket is listening in on them. Jessie has a listening device and headphones and is hearing everything they say.

She dreams of a bed and dress made of crystals and James thinks of a crystal palace. Meowth thinks of all the crystals. So they decide to steal the crystal.

Team Rocket uses a Tentacruel machine to go to the bottom of the lake and snatch the crystal in its tentacles. They wished they could use something better, but they used up all their money on the energy draining machine.

All of a sudden, while Ash and his friends are relaxing at the lake, they notice the middle of the lake isn't glowing. They turn around and see Team Rocket taking off the top of their Tentacruel machine and the crystal in the grasp of the machine. Team Rocket says their motto, then gets in their Meowth balloon.

The clouds part and out flies a Zapdos. Ash uses his Pokédex to find out the information on Zapdos.

Team Rocket thinks about how much the boss would reward them for a Zapdos. Zapdos sends electricity at them but the crystal absorbs his electricity. Finally, a spark that Zapdos sends breaks a hole in the balloon. They blast off again.

Zapdos collapses on the ground. Krystal says that this was part of the secret, that Zapdos comes to so he can replenish his electricity.

Ash goes to find Team Rocket. Team Rocket is lying around with the crystal in their hands. Ash and his friends tell Team Rocket to stop. James says that maybe if they turn around they won't be seen. They know that that won't work, so Jessie sends out Arbok and James sends out Victreebel.

James is inside Victreebel, his legs kicking in the air. Jessie tells Arbok to use Poison Sting. Pikachu dodges Poison Sting with Quick Attack, sending Arbok flying onto Jessie. Victreebel uses Razor Leaf, which Pikachu also dodges with another Quick Attack. Team Rocket then leaves quickly, but Ash won't stop until he's gotten the crystal. He commands his Bayleef to use Vine Whip to get the crystal, but James' Victreebel also uses Vine Whip. They keep pulling and suddenly they both let go, making the fly through the air, and Ash, fearing that it will fall on the ground and break, jumps to catch it.

He falls over a cliff and just in time, Bayleef saves him using a Vine Whip.

Now they go back to the lake to put the crystal back in its rightful place. Ash swims down to the shrine and places it on the shrine. But something is wrong: the crystal does not glow as it did before.

The electric Pokémon swim down to the crystal and thunderbolt it. It glows like before.

Now, Ash, Krystal, and the others push Zapdos into the water. But the crystal stops glowing, and the electric Pokémon thunderbolt it again. It lights back up and Zapdos' power is restored. Zapdos emerges from the water reenergized.

Zapdos flies away, and Ash and his friends start to go. As they leave, Krystal tells them to keep this secret away in the deepest part of their hearts. Brock says he'll keep her beauty in the deepest part of his heart, and Misty has to pull him away.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is hanging off a limb. They're ranting on about their bad luck and then Zapdos comes along and thunderbolts them and they feel even worse.
