This episode is essential viewing because: Ritchie is knocked out of the Pokémon League and departs. The Pokémon League ends.

Ash is in the house in the Pokemon Village, laying on his bed and sulking because he lost. In the other room, Brock, Misty, Mrs. Ketchum and Prof. Oak are there. Brock says that Ash wont even come out to eat. His mom wonders if he has a cold. Brock says hes just depressed. Misty goes to try and cheer Ash up, but he rudely tells her to leave, and she gets angry. Mrs. Ketchum says he shouldnt get mad, she was trying to be nice. Ash and Misty argue for a few minutes. Oak says Misty has a point about Ash not training enough. If he had trained more, he might have gotten further. You can only get so far on luck. Misty and Ash start argueing and insulting each other more, and Pikachu gets confused and shocks everyone. =)

Later, they see on the TV theyre saying stuff about the 5th round, where Richie is going to battle later. They meet up with Richie later, who can now use 6 Pokemon for the battle. Ash tells Richie hes sure hell win, and good luck. Later, Richie is in the stadium, and the battle begins! He and the other trainer are soon both down to one Pokemon each! The other trainer sends an Ivysaur, and Richie sends Sparky! They fight for a while, and Sparky loses! (I dont feel like going into detail today) Ash says he cant believe it.

Later, Richie and Sparky are outside, by a lake. Ash and his Pikachu come over to them. Richie says that he and Ash have something else in common now. The two Pikachu talk, and start playing around. Richie says you can learn a lot from losing. they both look out at the lake. In some bushed behind them, Team Rocket is there, of course. James says something about stealing the two Pikachu.

Richie says that stuff about training hard, and knowing the mistakes you made, etc etc etc. They both make a promise to each other to become Pokemon Masters. They turn to see their Pikachu fall into a pit! They run over, and also fall into one. Jessie and James come and say the motto. Ash tries to get out, but then they fall even further. James says they dug a split level hole. Meowth uses a cage on a fishing pole to capture Sparky and Pikachu. The cage is shock-proof, of course. James mentions how it also will conserve the electricity. Meowth says that they decided to be nice to the enviroment.

Just then, Ash and Richie are flown out of the hole by Pidgeotto and Happy! Ashs Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip to try and get the cage, but James pulls it away. Weezing uses Smog, but Pidgeotto Gusts it away, and it covers Team Rocket. Richie sends Zippo, and Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf, and the Pikachu are freed from the cage. Zippo torches Team Rocket, and they run around on fire. Pikachu meanwhile shocks the cage. Squirtle douses Team Rocket with Water Gun, and they realize the cage is gone. Ash says they can have it. He tosses it to them, and they get shocked by the electricity in it, and it explodes, and Team Rocket blasts off again!

That evening is also the night for the closing ceremony, where the competitors in the league march through the stadium and recieve special Pokemon League Badges. Later, the ceremonies begin, and the trainer walk into the stadium with their Pokemon. In the bleachers, Ashs mom is crying. Pres. Goodshow gives everyone a badge. (Which are really cool looking) Outside, Team Rocket has come up with a plan to dig under the stadium, and come up under the trainers and take their Pokemon.

Back on top, a big fireworks display has started. And Team Rocket has found something that looks like a bomb. Theyre launched into the air with the firework, and blast off with a bang (for the second time this episode.) The next day, the stadium is empty, except for Ash and Richie, who say their goodbyes. Richie leaves. Ash has a flashback of the battles he had in the Pokemon League. Then he says theyre going to Pallet.
