This episode is essential viewing because: Ash defeats Cissy and earns a Coral Eye Badge.

Ash, Misty, Tracey and Pikachu are riding Lapras across the ocean on their way to the next island. Misty says it seems like Lapras is having fun. Tracey says that it can still move pretty fast even with them riding. Suddenly, Pikachu loses its grip and falls! But Ash catches it. Ash says he hopes they can get something to eat soon. Tracey says they can at Mikan Island, and theirs even a Gym there. Ash says hell have to challenge the Gym Leader, and tells Lapras full speed ahead!

Behind them, a periscope pops out of the water. Its attached to Team Rockets Magikarp sub. Jessie says theyre on the trail of the twerps, and full speed ahead! James and Meowth look exhausted. James says hes tired, and he and Meowth stop pedaling. Which causes the sub to sink into a bunch of seaweed. Jesseis says to stop complaing and start pedaling! James says they have been all day. They keep pedaling, and Jessie says that because they lost the blimp, the Boss will probabaly kick them off Team Rocket! Meowth says thats why they have to steal some rare Pokémon. Suddenly, the sub stops. Its wrapped in seaweed, and falls back to the ocean floor.

Meanwhile, Ash and the others have arrived at Mikan Island. Ash recalls Lapras and they go to the Pokémon Center and call Prof. Oak. He asks how Pikachu and Togepi are doing, and theyre doing fine. Tracey says hes doing fine, too! Oak asks who he is, and he says hes Tracey Sketchum. (::groans at bad pun::) Ash says hes a Pokémon Watcher. Tracey tells Oak how he admires him and stuff. Then Muk appears, and starts bugging Prof. Oak. Ash says how he caught Lapras, and Oak says to train it well. Muk knocks him over, and the call ends.

They go outside, and Tracey says he cant believe hes friends with people who are friends with Prof. Oak! Misty is surprised that Oak is so famous. Tracey says that every Watcher dreams of having their report reviewed by Prof. Oak! Misty says shell have to get his autograph. =) Ash asks Tracey what the Gym Leader is like. Tracey says that its supposed to be one of the toughest of the Orange Crew. Ash says he cant wait. They soon see the Mikan Gym. Ash runs to it, but stops when he sees a coconut on the ground. He picks it up, and a bunch of water falls from above him and soaks him and Pikachu.

A kid comes out from behind a tree, laughing. He says Ash cant be a good trainer if he fell for the trap. Ash sees a string tied to the coconut, which is tied to a bucket up a tree. Ash says he was good enough to fight in the Indigo Pokémon League, and was in the Top 16. The kid says to go home, and the Gym Leaders in the Orange Crew are a lot tougher! Ash says hes going to battle the gym leader, and the kid says not without battling him first! But then, a lady with brown hiar, wearing a dress, scolds the kid, saying he should be cleaning his room.

The kid says he found Ash and the others sneaking around. Ash says that hes there to battle the Gym Leader! The girl says her name is Sissy, and shes the Gym Leader! Ash says he expected a guy. Misty says she probabaly beat all the guys. Tracey is drawing a picture of Sissy, and says he needs to make some observations. Misty asks just what hes making observations of. =) (Tracey is a lot like Brock in some ways, isnt he?)

They go in the Gym. Sissy tells Ash theyll use Water Pokémon, because hes a little squirt. Ash gets mad, and the kid starts calling him a squirt. Sissy shoves him away, saying hes an even littler squirt. =) Ash asks how many Pokémon theyll battle with. Sissy says thats not how they do things in the Orange Islands. The Pokémon do more than just battle. There will be two challenges for the Pokémon. A wall opens, revealing cans lined along a counter. A pool opens in the center of the room.

Sissy sends her Seadra! The Pokédex says its known for its horrible temperment, but it is strong and fast. Ash says it wont win any beauty contests, and it squirts water at his face. Sissy says theyll have a Water Gun challenge. The Pokémon will compete like athletes, and Seadra will warm up first. The kid uses something to blow some bubbles into the air. Seadra pops them all with blats of water. Tracey says hes never seen anything like it! Sissy says the winner is whoever can knocks down the most cans.

Ash sends his Squirtle. Sissy says it looks like a good Squirtle, but it better be a good loser. Seadra uses Water Gun to knock down several cans. Squirtle does, too. They seem evenly matched. Tracey draws the Pokémon, saying that if theyre good enough, maybe Prof. Oak will review them! Then Psyduck pops up. Misty says they dont need any headaches, so get in your Pokéball! Psyduck starts bouncing the G/S Ball around, and Misty takes it and yells at poor Psyduck.

Seadra and Squirtle knock down all the cans. Sissy says that now they do moving targets. A wall opens to the outside. A red disk is shot from a machine, and Seadra shatters it with Water Gun. Then three disks are shot, and Seadra hits those, too. Squirtle also hits all the disks. In the final challenge, one disk will be shot, and whichever Pokémon hits it first wins! The disk shoots out, but Squirtle and Seadra hit it at the same time! Sissy says its a draw. Ash tells Squirtle it did great. The kid asks what theyre going to do. Sissy says theyll break the tie with a Pokémon Wave Ride!

They go out to the beach, where a bouy is far out in the water. Sissy says that the Pokemon have the swim around it, and the winner is the first one back. She sends her Blastoise, and Ash sends Lapras. Tracey says Lapras is the strongest swimmer there is. But before they can start the race, the Magikarp sub appears out of the water! Team Rocket comes out of the hatch on top. Sissy asks if they need any first aid. They start saying their motto. Misty says its always the same. Ash points out that they changed the first part a bit. Sissy asks f he knows what theyre talking about, and he says not exactly, but theyre used to it. =)

Jessie says its great to breathe fresh air! James says he didnt thin kthey would make it. Meowth says nine lives flashed before his eyes. =) Ash asks if theyll leave and James asks if he knows how much trouble they went through to get there? He says how the sub got tangled in seaweed, and they decided that one of them had to swim out and untangle it. James volunteers and swims out. He manages to get it untangled, but it starts floating away. He swims after, not knowing if hell make it to the surface or not. Back in the present, James says its like some awful made-for-TV movie. =) Meowth hits him, and points at Blastoise and Lapras, saying they can get a two for one deal!

James says hell make this a touching story of personal triumpth or personal tragedy, and has Weezing use Smog. Jessie fires the net, but its only big enough for Blastoise. They figure they can come back later, and leave. Ash says they have to save Blastoise, but Sissy says it can handle itself. In the sub, Team Rocket finds out that they cant move the pedals again! James says not again! They sink to the bottom. They try pushing the pedals as hard as they can, but break them off by accident! James says its the end, and Jessie says theyll never blast off again. They start cryng, and Meowth says he has an idea! They could all get out and push the sub, like you do with a car thats stuck. Its worth a try!

They swim out and start pushing, but then Blastoise starts swimming up, pulling them and the sub along with it. It jumps from the water, rips off the net, and lands safely on the beach. James wonders why he feels like the catch of the day. Jessie says its because the Boss is going to have them on a platter. But they arent going to give up! Ash says they never learn, and has Pikachu shock them. Then Blastoise uses its water cannons, and Team Rocket blasts off again!

Ash says they can start the race. Sissy says that the trainers have to stand on the Pokémon during the race! They do, and the Pokémon go out into the water. Tracey says it looks dangerous. And the race begins! As they approach the buoy, Ash tells Lapras to get to the inside, but Blastoise keeps knocking them back. It rams into Lapras, nearly knocking Ash off, but Lapras catches him. They get around the buoy, and catch up with Sissy and Blastoise. Suddenly, a huge waves comes from nowhere, right behind them! Lapras freezes part of the wave with Ice Beam, but the other half hits Sissy and Blastoise, and sends them flying! But Blastoise cacthes her on its back.

Sissy and Blastoise pull into the lead again. Ash tells Lapras to use Ice Beam up to the shore, and to get on the ice. It does, and start sliding along it! And Lapras wins by a nose! It stops on the shore, and Ash is thrown against a tree. =) But hes won. Sissy says it was smart to freeze the water like that, and she can see why he made it so far. She gives him the Coral Eye Badge. She says all the badges in the Orange League are seashells. They leave on Lapras. Misty says she wishes she had a cool badge like that one Ash got, and says she should have challenged sissy. Ash says only good trainers can win it, and she yells what is that supposed to mean?! =) Tracey says they were lucky to see such a great trainer in action, and Misty sees hes drawing a picture of Sissy riding Blastoise. She says isnt he supposed to be a Pokémon Watcher? =)
