The episode opens on Mandarin Island. Ash is ending a battle with another trainer. Bulbasuar uses Razor Leaf on the Butterfree, which defeats it. Ash is very pleased with the win, which is his third in a row. He begins to brag about it and (it seems for one is episode only, he is about to take a step back to how he was in the early episodes) and Misty confides in Tracy that sometimes his brain goes out to lunch. They go and have dinner at a cafe, where Ash and Misty sit outside at a table. Ash is gulping down sandwiches very fast incase he has to beat someone else. Tracy comes up and explains why everyone on the island want to battle. He reads from a flyer that there is going to be a talk and battle demonstration from Misty's hero, Prima (Better known to us as Lorelei of the Elite 4 on R/B/Y). Tracy and Misty are talking about her when she walks up behind them. They are all gobsmacked. Misty and Tracy ask her loads of questions but she passes by them and says hello to Togepi.

Team Rocket, meanwhile, are watching from the bushes. James thinks he's seen Prima somewhere before. Back with Ash and co., Misty and Tracy are still trying to talk to Prima, who is very distant. "Just listen," she murmers, "the wind is speaking." Tracy and Misty get sweatdrops. Ash shouts at Prima that he wants to battle her. He says that they only way he can beat the best is if he beats one of the best. Prima continues to talk to herself. He ask her if she's afraid to battle and she just laughs at him, which makes his face go as red as his hat. Eventually Ash goes off to find someone else. Misty says to Prima that she should teach Ash a lesson.

Ash finds a beach surfer dude type-trainer who agrees to a battle when he sees his badges. Misty decides she may as well watch and Tracy joins her. Prima watches from a distance. They decide on a two Pokemon each and the battle begins: First, the trainer sends out a Persian, whose tail is straight, which means it has had a lot of experience. Ash decides on Squirte and it uses a Water Gun attack. It misses. Surprising, the trainer orders Persian to use Thunderbolt attack. Squirtle uses withdraw and it recovers. Next, Squirtle uses Skull Bash, which defeats the Persian easily.

The trainer then sends out Tauros and it uses Tackle and Squirtle faints. Ash recalls Squirtle and foolishly sends out Charizard. As soon as it is released it flamethrowers Ash and Misty says, "Now you really look like Ash!" Charizard continues to disobey it's trainer. The other trainer takes advantage and tells Tauros to use to use Take Down, after which Charizard uses Flamethrower of it's own accord on the Tauros. The Tauros faints. Ash runs to congratulate Charizard but it flies into the air as the other trainer runs for it.

This looks bad, Charizard is out of control and Ash tries to recall him, but to no avail. It keeps using flamethrowers. Suddenly Prima runs up and sends out her Slowbro. She orders it to use disable and then to bring Charizard down. Ash is now able to recall his Pokemon. "A trainer is as good as his Pokemon," she tells Ash. He yells at her that he knows this but she says she thinks he doesn't. A bell sounds and she starts to walk away, then she stops and invites them to come to her demonstration, that afternoon.

That afternoon, Prima is at the Stadium about to begin her demonstration. Team Rocket are watching from the stands, disguised as refreshment sellers. Jessie suggests they try to steal her Pokemon. "You wish," says Meowth. As Prima does the battle demonstration, Ash, Misty and Tracy are in the audience. Tracy is sketching and Misty is starstruck by Prima's greatness. Ash mutters to himself, "She's really good!" When to demonstration is over, Ash and co. are taken to Prima's house on the island.

Prima tells them all sorts of things about Pokemon. She tells them that everyone has there own stlyle of battling, for example she tries to be like water. Ash a bit more talking, Ash challenges her to a battle again. Surprisingly, she accepts. They decide on a one on one battle. Ash chooses Pikachu and Prima chooses Cloyster. Ash tells her he's studied how she battles and he knew she'd choose a water type. Ash begins by telling Pikachu to use a Thunderbolt attack. Before Pikachu's attack touches it, Prima calls for Cloyster to use Withdraw. The attack does not have any effect on Cloyster. Ash orders Pikachu to try Agility, Cloyster uses Reflect and creates a wall, which Pikachu bounces off.

Pikachu gets up again and uses a Thunder attack but Cloyster uses rage and then, before Pikachu can use Quick Attack, hits it with Aurora Beam. Next is a Take Down, which finishes Pikachu off. Prima recalls Cloyster and apologises to Ash and Pikachu. Prima explains to Ash that the badges he earned were a gift from his Pokemon, who worked for them aswell. Ash realises that they battle for him because they care for him. She tells him that losing is an important part of being a trainer aswell. She also tells him he must learn to battle side by side with his Pokemon.

Ash thanks Prima for teaching him this. Team Rocket appear in the Meowth Balloon and jump down to recite the motto. They have decided not to bother stealing Prima's Pokemon and they will steal Pikachu 'while it's still pooped.' Prima sends out Jynx and tells it to use Ice Beam, which freezes TR in a block of ice. The Jynx uses Blizzard to blow them away, or rather, blast them off. When leave Prima directs Ash and co. on how to get Trovita gym. They must get to the other side of the island and then catch a ferry. The gang think about all the things Prima taught them as they set off on their journey to the other side of Mandarin Island.

The Mandarin Island Miss Match Trivia:

Lorelei is incorrectly named "Prima" in this episode, possibly because "Lorelei" has an extra syllable than "Canna", her Japanese name.
