Anyone out there like the NFL? If you do, this is where you can discuss it! The draft is almost here, by the way.
-
Im picking the skins to win it all
RG3 will be better this year
-
I don't know, the seahawks were good, they'll be in the playoffs, the seahawks go to NFC Champs.
-
I'm a huge Ravens fan (I'm from Baltimore) but I'm leaning towards a Texans-Seahawks Superbowl in 2013.
Texans will have a strong defense next year through the help of Ed Reed (though he won't be playing too well - he'll just be a great leader) and their offense will still be decent despite Schaub being a slightly above average qb. I think we can face the fact that Pats are on a decline and Broncos *maybe* are not as good as we thought (although Broncos are my second favorite team) just cause their 11 game win streak was against the AFC West and an injury heavy Ravens.... Who knows, maybe the Colts can take it away this year too? Luck did very well as a rookie in the no huddle, so he could be the heir to Manning in Indianapolis. And then there's the Bengals... AFC North could be a challenge this year.
(btw I'm a Ravens fan that doesn't really harbor any grudge towards the Colts because I wasn't alive in the 90s and one of the first football games I saw were Super Bowl 35 anyway).
Seahawks have an explosive offense in Russell Wilson, but I'm hoping they can actually take out the 49ers and Falcons this time in the playoffs. I'm finding it hard to predict the NFC side of the SB just because of stuff like that; Falcons learns they don't really choke (although their second half still needs much to be desired, especially against the 49ers who live for second half comebacks- it also seems like they enjoy the Game Manager stance on offense for the second half which makes zero sense) or is getting better about it. 49ers are just plain destructive. Seahawks are on the rise, Redskins have two extremely powerful quarterbacks that they should learn to switch out, Giants are the Giants and once they hit the playoffs it's practically game over. Saints will maybe have a defense in 2013.
And then we have the NFC North, with 3 strong playoff contenders (despite only 2 making it) last year and the Lions which have an explosive offense offset by an awful defense - they tend to lose games within a field goal.
2013 is a little predictable for the AFC (though the Chiefs may be better in 2013, same with the Bengals and the Browns, Steelers are in rebuild mode, the AFC East and most of the rest of the AFC West is a joke outside of their leaders though), but the NFC has far too much going for it. They whooped us in the pro bowl (62-35 holy crap).
But Chargers are going to win it all anyway, who cares....
Also, favorite teams by division? Mine are
AFC West - Broncos
AFC North - Ravens!!!!!!!!!!!!
AFC East - none, I hate them all
AFC South - Texans
NFC West - Seahawks
NFC North - Lions
NFC East - Giants
NFC South - Saints
-
The Pats will probably bottle it again.
-
AFC East hater?! Shame. Pats are my favorite, but losing Welker screwed them. Broncos will be in super bowl versus the skins, and rg3 will PWN
-
The Pats will probably bottle it again.
Yeah because the Pats aren't that dominant anymore. Brady's O-line is great but against a competent pass rush he really sucks at getting rid of the ball in the right way- if you see other players, they can scramble to some extent (Joe Flacco, Rodgers), get something to a slot receiver or tight end (Joe Flacco, Rodgers, Luck, Eli, and even Schaub), scramble to hell and back (RG3, Kaepernick, Wilson), or play a quick, no-huddle offense that lets them get the ball out quickly and easily (Peyton Manning). Brady borders on intentional downing and almost-interceptions. Their defense tends to suck most of the time and frankly everyone's rising up to the challenge to beat them - it's the reason why you see these constant Pats blowouts, because they're paranoid that their defense won't give them the upper hand in the game. It's been shown as of late that you don't need an "Elite" QB to succeed, you just need one who can step it up in the playoffs.
Brady will be remembered as one of the greatest qbs of all time (up there with Peyton, Montana, etc) and I think he deserves one more ring, but I absolutely abhor his organization and his coach and I hate the whole AFC East. He is a monster but he is too old to take it all the way and win another Super Bowl. Manning has the same issue these days. Players like Eli, Flacco, etc are clutch and it's players like them who can take people to championships and Super Bowls, not Brady.
AFC East hater?! Shame. Pats are my favorite, but losing Welker screwed them. Broncos will be in super bowl versus the skins, and rg3 will PWN
Are you serious? Let me tell you piece by piece what I think about this post.
Welker was a slot receiver, which you can get anywhere. They didn't lose much with him, and frankly Peyton will have a good time with him on the Broncos. But you must remember, Brady won many super bowls with a poor receiving core; his play is actually so good that it elevates the play of those around him. Welker's loss didn't "screw" him, because he also got Danny Amendola who was helping carry the Rams (despite the Rams winning 7.5 of their 16 games). They also resigned Aqib Talib as a corner, so their secondary will be fine. What will hurt Brady is the potential for Rob Grondkowski to be out for part of the season. They also still have the draft.
As for the Broncos-Skins super bowl, hold your breath. Manning's playoff track record isn't too hot (two Super Bowls, one lost, and winning as many games as Joe Flacco did in 5 years compared to Manning's 10+, while losing 11), and the Broncos will hit the playoffs by virtue of being in the weakest division (the AFC West, where they are guaranteed at least 5 wins). It is nowhere near a certainty that they will be in top shape for the Super Bowl as many may think, especially because they have to play against the Giants, Patriots, Ravens, Texans, Redskins, and Cowboys. KC may even be good during this season, provided they can create a coherent team with all of their talent.
This merely prevents them from a 1 or 2 seed. But the playoffs are totally different.
As for why I hate the AFC East;
I went to high school with Rex Ryan's son and because of the way his oldest son was treated I despise him as a human being. He plays favorites with his sons; his oldest son was left in Maryland and he despises it because his grandparents can't do much for him, and his younger son lives in Jersey and plays football. Add to that how he's a fool of a head coach and how he pretty much destroyed the development of Mark Sanchez and lead the Jets to a really dumb series of losses further shows how poor he is of a head coach. I have zero respect for the Jets organization and I advise all of New York/Jersey to hop onto the inconsistent-but-generally-a-respectable-franchise known as the New York Giants. On top of that, Rex Ryan is too loud mouthed, dumb, and egotistical when he talks. He was a quality defensive coordinator, which I feel was wasted because of Kyle frickin' Boller, but he cannot coach a damn team!
I despise the Patriots because Bellichick has no soul. I also despise them because of the frontrunners that hopped on board over in Baltimore because of their 16-0 season. And on top of that, the Patriost fans wonder why we hate them; because many local ones just jumped on the bandwagon when they started winning games. I bet they never knew that their beloved Patriots really were not dominant at all until Drew Bledsoe was injured; that's the only reason Brady ever got to toss a football. Not only that, but they were the reason for that extremely dumb tuck rule, and thankfully the refs in the Ravens-Broncos game realized it was a dumb rule because they called a Manning pass a fumble. And their fans still piss me off because they aren't even smart about being fans; they've lost two super bowls since 2004, so I don't know why you're frontrunning on the Patriots. Regular season success means nothing if you can't take away the Super Bowl consistently, and you lose to a team that was most likely 6-seed in the end... twice. I'm almost surprised these dumb Patriots fans aren't Giants fans, although I would be pissed off if they were because I genuinely respect the Giants.
Don't get me wrong, I do respect Tom Brady but I think he is a poor sportsman when he loses both on and off the field, which annoys the hell out of me; I can't blame him though, the dude was picked on the sixth round of the draft and he has a huge chip on his shoulder as a result. He is a great guy though.
The Dolphins are a foolish organization that do nothing but hire overpriced free agents that really aren't that great. Case in point; Dannell Ellerbe, Chad Ochocinco, etc. They have no clue what they're doing and whatever.
And the Bills are so forgettable that nobody cares about them outside of Buffalo.
More on the Skins, no the Skins probably won't make it yet. Kirk Cousins is still somewhat unproven despite playing some explosive games, and RG3 will get injured if he keeps up his style of play. They need to give RG3 better protection and RG3 needs to learn to scramble better. There is no way he will be able to learn to scramble like Aaron Rodgers or hell even Colin Kaepernick in before the preseason with a torn ACL. Not only that, but Shanahan is too stupid to know when RG3 is injured. Although, I guess you have Haloti Ngata to blame for that! Ha! Go Ravens!
I sincerely think Russell Wilson can improve and take the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. If not them, then the 49ers have a great shot too, and if the Giants make the playoffs it's GAME OVER. As for the AFC side, I can be a homer and put up a case for the Ravens, although I really want the Broncos to hit the Super Bowl. I don't think it'll happen though. So I'm going to guess Texans if they continue to improve, considering the talent they have on their roster (Arian Foster, JJ Watt - scratch that, the whole defense, Ed Reed (my manz), with Matt Schaub as a game manager that can make great plays), or even the Colts if Luck truly lives up to his namesake. But Broncos-Skins, especially the Skins part, is too farfetched.

And they 'cheated'. Whatever they did...
-
Yeah I don't really care about Spygate. Bear in mind that they actually got better after Spygate. Their 16-0 season was post-Spygate, for reference, and they would've won the Super Bowl if Eli wasn't clutch.
-
Personally, I didn't see 'spygate' as a big deal. Purely because it happens in English football all the time.
clutch
Forgive the ignorance, but is that another term for 'crap'?
-
No, considering Brady lost to Eli in two super bowls lol
Clutch means you work best under pressure
Example: Eli Manning is clutch, his brother is not. Eli's the master of 4th quarter comebacks and playoff runs as a sixth seed, considering the sheer number of 4th quarter comebacks he's had, and throws like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27XeNefwABw) that cause major upsets in the NFL. Peyton, however, chokes in the playoffs constantly, this being one of the more recent examples. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_TjMqnYZqk)
-
He did well to stay on his feet, I must say.
See, in English football, we just refer to players like Eli as 'dench' or 'beast'.
I follow the NFL, there's just not many ways of watching it over here.
-
idk if it's a universal term (i'd have thought english people would've heard of it too... lol) but clutch refers to anyone able to perform under pressure and not just sportsmen
-
Nah, it's a term I've never heard in that context before. I always thought the clutch was the third pedal in my car that I use to change gear with.
I've watched college football before. Always amazed at the crowds that show up for that.
-
Belicheck has a soul. He just hides it behind his hoodie.
Its a very good hiding spot...

Btw favorite game of 2012-2013 season?
Regular Season:
Jacksonville - Texans I forget which week, but it was 43-37 Texans; holy hell@Chad Henne, I thought he was a joke up until that game. Granted, he probably still is, but Blackmon was revealed to be a solid receiver and the Texans revealed they can still win despite the momentum being on the other side. Seeing Schaub handle many 5-receiver sets late in the game was fun to watch as well, considering how merely average Schaub seems to be.
Vikings - Packers Week 17, a lot on the line with the ultimate NFC North rivalry, eeking out a close game between two of the elite in the NFL - Aaron Rodgers and Adrian Peterson. NFC North is interesting because each team actually really sucks, but has one truly Elite Player (Bears are more all around good with a stellar defense, Urlacher was their "elite" player until recently when he started to decline or got cut). Packers have Rodgers (QB), Lions have Calvin Johnson/Megatron (WR), and Vikings have Adrian Peterson (RB).
Ravens - Patriots, I like to think the way my semester goes in the Spring is tied heavily to the way the Ravens season ends. This semester is pretty smooth so far, because Ravens won the Super bowl. Last Spring was awful, because Ravens were taken out of the Super Bowl because Lee Evans dropped a pass and Billy Cundiff missed a game-tying field goal. This was catharsis, and the eerie similarity in the ending of the 2012 AFCCG and this regular season game were too good to pass up. End score was 37-34
Patriots - 49ers - It was so cute seeing the Pats try to come back only to be ultimately beaten by the 49ers. Too cute.
Falcons - Saints - I think Drew Brees' whole pregame speech of "WE OWN THIS DIVISION!!!!" was awesome, because it lead to a pretty neck-in-neck game and it was a very fun to watch game.
Colts - Packers - Seeing Andrew Luck out there coming back in the second half against Rodger's offense was nothing short of spectacular. They were motivated till the very end and Luck really did live up to his namesake.
Post-season;
The Super Bowl
Ravens-Broncos - holy CRAP
Packers - 49ers - so this was a great game until the 49ers started to dominate with the read option... then it became heavily lopsided

The draft is today!!!!!! 8)
-
The draft isnt all that important to me this year, just linemen and stuff. Not to many skill positions. Geno's stock has been falling too. I don't see a qb going in the first round.
-
It's important to me, Ravens need Receivers and a Left Tackle and a bunch of defensive linemen
you still need skill to be a limeman
-
I'm a Browns fan, but they will still suck even after the draft, but if we are lucky, we may get 6 wins!
-
How does the draft work exactly? It's not like a soccer transfer window where you can just go for any player, is it?
-
I'm a Browns fan, but they will still suck even after the draft, but if we are lucky, we may get 6 wins!
i wouldn't count you guys out yet, may not beat the bengals or the ravens but the steelers are going to be weak especially if they draft weak
NFL Draft works like this:
1) People in College Football are selected to participate in a draft where teams pick who they want from those college football teams to be on their teams
2) Drafting is in order. There are 7 rounds with 32 picks each, and #1 in each round, at first, is the 32nd ranked team in the previous year (by record and other things, and there are a _lot_ of other factors in this) presumably so they get the best player or the player they need the most. The #32 in each round is the winner of the Super Bowl; the rest are sorted by the position in the playoffs they lost (for picks #21-32) and then by record (picks #1-20).
3) Certain team gets compensatory picks in each round based on starters that they have lost, and the compensatory picks are based upon the statistical production of the starters that they have lost. By signing people that they wish to start in games, they reduce their number of compensatory picks.
4) Players not drafted in the NFL can be signed as undrafted free agents.
5) Teams can trade picks for other picks (typically someone offers two picks for a pick in an earlier round and etc) or they can trade players for picks. For instance, Ravens recently traded Anquan Boldin in February for a sixth round pick.
That's basically how it works.
-
Ej Manuel picked 16th to Buffalo, insted of Nassib, Barkley, or Geno Smith. Didn't see that one coming! Jets also pick a CB. Why trade revis to get a CB who isnt as good as revis? His acl would be fine, im sure, id keep the best player on the team. Some of these teams make me wonder WHY?!
-
Yeah what were the Bills thinking??? They're not even good, why draft a qb that nobody knew about and isn't anything special himself?
Ravens get strong safety Matt Elam. Solid first pick, I'd say, so we could've replaced that mediocre and overrated Pollard.
-
I knew about manuel, he burned Virginia Tech last year. :'( Hokies arnt going anywhere fast though...
-
That's actually a good system. So how would an established player (eg- Manning or Brady) move teams? Would the team say "We want your player, how much do you want for him?" like over here, or can players only move in the draft?
-
Yes, thats right, you can trade players. Also, Geno Smith goes to the jets, so now they have 4 qb's. I find that insane.
EDIT: Wow, Jets actually have 6. Seriously. Why???
-
Geno Smith's career is done. Jets took some good potential (Mark Sanchez for instance) and rotted it away once. They are going to do it again.
That's actually a good system. So how would an established player (eg- Manning or Brady) move teams? Would the team say "We want your player, how much do you want for him?" like over here, or can players only move in the draft?
Something like that. Manning's situation was awkward because in 2011 he was out for a neck injury, so he was released by the Colts. Then he went on this heavy media-hyped journey through teams and settled on the Broncos. As for Brady - I think Patriots will keep him unless something like that happens. Also, if production of a player is worth less to the team than the contract they demand, then they make that person walk or trade them. Recent examples; Darrelle Revas, Anquan Boldin, Wes Welker. That's when they consider trading them. As it stands, Manning and Brady despite being in their mid-to-late 30s, are very competitive and competent players, so they won't be traded or cut anytime soon short of a career ending injury.
Players can move any time during free agency (once their contract expires) or when they are released from a team for whatever reason. You can generally trade whenever but I don't think you can trade once the season starts. Trades have always been an odd thing, to be honest.
The NFL is not really like European Soccer, because it strives for competitive balance. They also play development stuff, so some teams don't mind losing for a few seasons because they are developing. Look up what the Oakland Raiders have been doing as of late to see what I mean; they cut nearly 50-60% of their roster this offseason so they could rebuild with the draft and cheap free agents and become a solid team again. Like the team who lost the AFCCG in 2001 because of the dumb tuck rule.
Also, just to clarify; the draft is for college players only. It does not apply to players already in the league.
Fun fact for you, though; Tom Brady was drafted in Round 6 as the 199th overall pick by the Patriots. He was actually very close to being undrafted and selling insurance (and that day haunts him to this day; hence, he has a chip on his shoulder). Peyton Manning, his "rival" of this generation, was drafted 1st overall by the Colts in contrast; a lot of qbs tend to be taken first round if they're projected to be really good. People just underestimated Tom Brady, and now the league is paying for it.
-
That's the truth, San Diego took Mant'i Teo.
-
That's the truth, San Diego took Mant'i Teo.
Was that in the 2nd or 3rd round? I missed it.
-
A slot receiver, two o-linemen, a strong safety, and many linebackers. And a fullback... as expected, minust he fullback. I don't see any need for one unless they're developmental - Vonta Leach is amazing.
-
Was that in the 2nd or 3rd round? I missed it.
2nd, 38th pick. My team only took a guard and defensive men, not bad, though.
-
Also, Chargers will win the Super Bowl this year. (http://www.covers.com/articles/articles.aspx?theArt=317172) After all, The Packers, Saints, Giants, and Ravens did...
-
Also, good point, but that is only a theroy, not a fact, I see at least 5 other teams more likely to win and most are in the NFC.
-
It's a joke, Chargers will still be mediocre next year
-
This just in, Tebow was released!
-
Now that they release him, the jets have 5 quarterbacks, and none of them are good. (Geno is probably gonna be good, but im waiting till he plays to judge him). I wonder about the jets sometimes...
-
Yeah, what are they thinking?
-
Yeah they're a terrible franchise atm. The saddest part is that Mark Sanchez was good too. I'm not even sure what happened to him and I hardly believe it's purely his fault that he's gotten worse.
-
Anyways, how would you rate your team's draft?
Browns
C+
-
Ravens would get an A from me for filling defense holes, getting a WR that effectively works like Boldin, and getting some linemen. Exactly what we were missing from last year.
-
Pats get a blank, I didn't watch the draft ;)
-
My team did better than I thought.
-
Just thought i'd throw out a question: Is Eli Manning an elite quarterback?
-
About as elite as Joe Flacco I'd say, in the sense that they're definitely franchise quarterbacks but they're one step below elite. Elite in the modern day is for a select 4 in my mind - Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees.
You're like 2 years late on that question sir
-
I say yes but Eli is fizzling out.
-
How so? He got the same 9-7 record two years in a row - the difference is that this year 9-7 didn't let him go to the playoffs (and he was against arguably tougher teams too) whereas last year 9-7 allowed them to win the NFC East. The three years before that were 12-4 (lost at home... because as we all know Giants play their A game at home right????), 8-8, and 10-6, with the latter two not allowing them to qualify for playoffs. Giants have never been a consistent playoff contender and even then, their forte has always been away games.
-
I think he's just a step below elite, but if he gets a nother ring, youd hae to say hes elite
-
Based on rings, he has more than his elite brother, Dan Marino, etc and he was Super Bowl MVP both times
Based on his actual performance, he's not elite because he was never a dominant qb. He's missed the playoffs loads of times and through fault of his own - sometimes he's brilliant and sometimes he's poor. Once again, same category as Joe Flacco, will not be revered as a legendary quarterback like Brady/Manning/Favre/Marino/Unitas/Montana/etc were or will be. But he is, in today's game, a top 10 qb.
-
Hey, he's getting old, I see 10 win tops this year.
-
He might hit 11/12 if he gets lucky
-
Hey, he's getting old, I see 10 win tops this year.
Brady was around Eli's age when he went 18-1
Peyton was around Eli's age when he won a super bowl and Peyton was planning phenomenal despite being 37. Age doesn't matter much.
Peyton and Brady are still dominant qbs and they're 37 and 35 respectively. "Getting old" means little for a passing qb. Considering 28 is Flacco at his supposed prime, 3 years is hardly much of a difference.
11-5 and 12-4 is not what the Giants tend to do. They enter as a wild card team and cruise through the playoffs.
-
Ok... they will be a wild card, but I just don't see above 10 wins, Redskins will dominate this year as well.
Lets talk about the NFC North guys.
I see the Packers wining again, but the Viking will make it hard.
-
Still off, and missing my point. My point is that Eli isn't getting worse with age nor is he getting old. He just plays inconsistent and cannot be elite as a result. The rest were just proof of such things, and how the Giants kinda stay stagnant and get a hot streak every once in a while. Maybe they will make the playoffs this year, maybe they won't. I just know that they dominate in the playoffs and they are a great away team.
Both North divisions are going to be fantastic in 2013 and it'll be interesting to see AFC North vs NFC North. Maybe the Lions will finally patch up their crappy defense to make way for their explosive offense, seeing as they've got a great running game compounded with a fantastic Drew Brees-like passing game on offense. Except it's their WR that makes it so great, and not Stafford.
Vikings, Packers, and Bears will still be good. Bears will have a decent offense (I hear Jay Cutler will have an O-line this year) compounded with a solid defense, Packers will have Aaron Rodgers leading the offense, and Vikings may be the bottom feeders come the fall time. Granted, they finally have receivers and they play very well against their division, and their defense isn't so bad, but who knows how healthy AP can stay and who knows how long he can continue to dominate? Running Backs have the lowest career lifetime of any position in the NFL.
-
The AFC North is not hard to figure out:
1. Ravens
2. Bengels
3. Steelers
4. Browns
-
AFC EAST
1: Pats
2:everyone else...
-
AFC North is up in the air this year. Bengals could take the division and the Steelers are looking scary again. Ravens have fixed many of their problems from 2012, and the Browns actually continue to improve. I wouldn't be surprised if we see another year where 3 AFCN teams hit the playoffs, and the order is up in the air.
-
That's my prediction, but anything can happen, I would love for Cleveland to come in as at least a wild card, but I don't think that will happen.
-
Give weeden some time, and the browns shouldget in
On a side note: from time to time, people think the redskins should change their name (something about racism I think??)
How do you feel about the name 'Redskins'??
-
Honestly, I don't care, back to the other discussion, Weedan sucks.
-
He sucks?? Oh well, I've never really cared much about the browns, haven't followed them much
-
Yeah, I'm a Browns fan and I think they were drunk when they picked him in the first round.
-
give him a year or two and hell be fine maybe...
-
Give weeden some time, and the browns shouldget in
idk about weeden man but their defense can carry them if necessary
As for giving him a few years, I agree with the drunk comment, he came in as a 28 or 29 year old rookie. That's already a bad sign.
-
He's 29?? Wow, im behind... always wondered why he looked old-ish
-
I just hope they wait a year or 2 and pick up a good QB like Braxton Miller out of Ohio State, which happens to be my favorite college team, oh you can also cover NCAA football if you like.
-
I despise ohio state cause theyre so darn good... haha
-
You're a hater, everyone at my school hate Ohio State.
-
Not surprised, people in Cleveland tend to hate winners
-
cleveland: city of haters
-
Hey, I find that offensive! I'm from that area!
Anyways, my high school team in my hometown which is an hour away from Cleveland and Ohio State are both winners!
Not really (about the anger), just please don't say stuff like that.
So, how about them Seahawks, besides the fail mary, they have an awesome year! Wouldn't you agree?
-
Hey, I find that offensive! I'm from that area!
It was more of a joke on the Cleveland sports curse (search for it) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports-related_curses) than anything actually spiteful.
Seahawks are going to have a great year and they may have a shot at the super bowl. NFC West is really kicking up with 3 solid playoff contenders as well. 2013 will be a fun year to watch in Football, because the NFC West and North are ridiculous (there are 7 legitimate playoff contenders in that division alone), AFC East will always have 2-3 teams that will have a good shot at the playoffs. NFC South all finished fairly decent last year (3 7-9s with good potential in Cam Newton, Buccs secondary is revitalized, Saints may get their defense back, and the Falcons are a playoff contender every year with Matt Ryan). NFC in generally has many many teams that could clinch a playoff spot.
Can't say the same about the AFC. AFC North has 4 solid contenders, but West has the Broncos, East has Patriots and maybe Dolphins/Jets (MAYBE), and South has Texans and Colts. And even then many of these guys i've listed are shaky.
-
Oh, your right, Cleveland just can't get a title.
-
mark sanchez threw 3 int at a jets practice yesterday. dont expect him to start this season
-
Maybe Jets secondary is just that good
Sanchez should've stayed in college a few more years, then maybe he'd be decent. He started to get worse around the time Jets defense fell apart
-
Burn on the pats coach.
-
wut are you talking about
-
Whoops , wrong football topic.
