Just nominated the entire Pokemon video game series
« on: October 13, 2014, 00:51 »
I was looking at a website for a toy museum in NY called The Strong®. I noticed that there was a poll for this year's nominations to the National Toy Hall of Fame. Past inductees include the Nintendo Gameboy, Barbie, and LEGOs. I noticed at the bottom of the page a link that was labelled Nomintate. So I clicked on it and saw that I could nominate a toy for 2015's induction. I immediately chose Pokemon and explained how the series has become a huge phenomenon and that several games in the series have broken world records and millions of players are still playing the games after nearly 20 years. I also explained how many of us who started playing the games with the original Gameboy titles have such fond memories. I hope that it is enough for the game series to be nominated! Do you agree with my nomination?

Whilst I'm not opposed to your vote I probably would have picked Bop It

I would've picked paper clips to be honest. And let's not forget bubble wrap. Both childhood staples. Oh, and staples.

I think both people's suggestions are good ideas, but mine are best.

The criteria for nominations are as follows:
Icon-status: The toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered
Longevity: The toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations
Discovery: The toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play
Innovation: The toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.

While Bop It continues to be popular, Pokemon itself changed the competitive field of video games. Until then the only real gaming competitions were for fighting games which were usually rated T to M. The Pokemon games fit all the criterion easily. Each gen of the games give a new sense of discovery with new Pokemon and a different region to explore, Pikachu is recognizable to even great grandparents, its popularity continues to grow, and many back in the 90s thought the craze would fade out like other fads of the day. It never faded and here we are nearly 20 years later.
