Why does Heatran have a gender?
« on: December 17, 2016, 21:23 »
It occurred to me just now that Heatran can be either male or female, and yet, it is unable to breed. Why give it a gender if it can't breed?

I suppose I could ask the same about Latios and Latias.

I've been wonder about Heatran since Gen 4. The Lati I can understand that GF made them siblings so they get a pass. But Heatran I can't find any justification for it having both genders.

The Lati I can understand that GF made them siblings
But not all Latias and Latios are related through family though!

Their not all siblings, anyway! That would be one BIG family!

I have a BIG family. My dad is the youngest of nine kids and on his side of the family there are 27 grandchildren in total. My step sister isn't included because she is related by marriage. So all Lati could be related somehow.

^But you don't know every single human being on the planet through family!

So Latias/Latios shouldn't know every single other Latias/Latios!

Theyre legendaries though, so there may not be that many of them.

To answer the topic, thiugh: heatran is based off volcanic remains, and we often use her/she pronouns when talking about volcanoes. Of course, that doesnt explain why heatran can be male, but considering the fact that we also use her/she pronouns to refer to boats, and the fact that we use various pronouns to refer to hurricanes, and the fact that european languages gender everything for no reason at all, I think its safe to say the answer is people have no idea why they gender certain things and are mostly making it all up.

its actually a very complicated and clever defense mechanism

trainers try to pick it up to try and aggressively affirm its gender cos "you're too masculine for a girl heatran" "you're too girly to be a boy heatran" they all say (all heatrans are actually transgender - hence the name) but its Difficult in the modern world cos pokemon culture is still Problematic regarding the LGBT community and no pokemon can transition openly ingame yet cos theyre all still a bit backwards genderwise in pokemon land sadly

but there are Efforts from various pokemon from the lgbt spectrum. boy Primarinas and girl Incineroars are doing their best this gen to increase noramlisation/affirmation along with heatran for the Trans people, espeon and umbreon are the Lesbains representatives and ditto is the Bisexuals totem pokemon for Obvious reasons. and idk wobbuffet is the Power Bottom Gay rep i guess??????????? buzzwole is the complimenting power top.

a transgender pokemon being a Legendary was a big thing back in the day even if it took till gen IV for it to happen! but sadly some trainers still dont Like this and seek out the heatrans to out them to the pokemon community cos they're weirdoes

so they find it and try to pick it up like a cat or dog to look at its 'nads to Aggressively Gender it and they dont find out cos they end up getting severe lava burns to the hands and arms and other body parts as a result of

a) literally picking up a pokemon made out of magma and
b) doing so cos they can't respect its non-conforming identity and having to be a nosey git and absolutely Needing to know what its genitals look like.

the "heatran-burnt arms" is often a mark of shame in the pokemon trainer community. all the other trainers see the trainer with burnt arms and legs and Everyone Knows and it is an efficient signifier of being both a closet transphobe and a weird gropey pokemon genital seeker and they are shunned from the town and retreat to some desolate cave/mountain away from society, descend into rabies madness after being bitten on the head by a rabid golbat, and are given a live sky buirial by a big flock of mandibuzzes and honckkrows.

What I find out now with single gendered Pokémon is Lilligant's one Dex entry that says it "finds a male it likes". Where is it going to find a male when it's 100% female? Do they mean male trainer or a male of a different species like Pikachu or Magmotar????

It would have to be in the Grass egg group (or Ditto) for one thing so Pikachu and Magmortar are totally bad examples. Maybe it's totally normal for Pokémon to breed with other species in the wild, albeit less likely than same species breeding, which is represented in game by getting eggs faster in the daycare.

Isn't "genderless" really more of a "gender unknown" concept? People don't really know the gender of certain legendaries but for Heatran/Cresselia/Lati@s they're known.

In canon the Latis are basically two halves of a single species (think the Nidorans). The specific Latis you see are siblings, though.

I can see your point there, but I think there are some cases in which the Pokémon really are genderless - e.g. Mewtwo, which was manufactured by humans who would thus know if its gender if it had one, which suggests to me that it does not.

i call sheneigans on mewtwo cos if they had control of engineering it they would have made it as sexy as possible for them cos you know what scientists are like. case in point: halo and its stupid "hey boyyyyyss" cortana

which is weird cos it means the scientists who made mewtwo were hot for golf-ball fingers, a nice pair of pecs and a big purple dolphin schlong* so long that it has to be tucked between its legs

*no i never looked at a dolphin schlong intentionally, all i know is you have to have females only in shows @ the seaworld n stuff cos males have prehensile nadgers and will drag you down to the bottom of the tank and kill u with it. i assume that tail of mewtwos is the same.
