PKMN.NET / PKMN.NET Discord Server!
« on: October 16, 2016, 18:39 »
Hey guys, I made a Discord server that may end up supplanting the IRC depending on how popular it gets. Here's the invite link. https://discord.gg/MMmp5FJ

Discord is basically if you take Skype and mix it with IRC, with none of the downsides of Skype, for those who don't know. There's a browser client and a regular client, and the browser client is the regular client in the browser. It's easy to setup as well.

I'll come up with roles and more channels later, and I'll just copy+paste the rules off of the rules page on there. Hopefully this gets more activity than IRC - everyone's been switching to discord lately which is kind of sad cause we used to get like 20+ users daily on IRC back in the day. But we switched to Discord for a bunch of chats and they've been way more active so why not?

Sorry if I did this without consulting you Joeno - I'll make sure you give you every permission I've got once you're on.

Gaming / Does anyone stream?
« on: July 26, 2016, 18:55 »
I have no idea if we can really advertise our streams here, but does anyone have a twitch channel or something that they stream on? What is it?

My twitch is twitch.tv/lraven17 and I tend to stream at times that are ungodly for Europeans, but I am trying to get better at finding a time. I mainly just stream stuff from my backlog though I will beaT Sonic 06 once I get 100 followers (200 I will play Shadow's story and at 300 I'll play Silver's story). I put a lot of details in my channel so yeah.

Random Randomness / Pretty Cool art you've seen recently?
« on: May 20, 2015, 10:46 »
Well, I am not much of a visual artist in terms of actually drawing things, but i do love looking at things.  Any cool art you've seen lately?  Cosplay?  Post whatever for the world to see.

Kay drew this like 5 years back and it's still stunning.

Random Randomness / I've spent half my life here...
« on: November 30, 2014, 03:16 »
So I turned 22 almost two weeks ago, which means I have officially spent half my life here...  I signed up when I was 11.  You guys don't really need to hear the specifics, I became socially better and a bit smarter because I started going on these boards, and even though I've had my run ins with everyone at the time I'm glad I spent all that time.  It's really nice, because I went from a stupid kid who hated just about everything with no friends to a man who's in a PhD program, has a ton of friends both IRL and on the internet (but still cynical).

I've officially hit 20000 posts as of this post, but I really wanna talk about most of the people I've seen that have contributed heavily to my time here...  and people who I miss and I hope can at least come around to reply to this.

Lottie - I love ya, wish you were around more and wish you weren't as busy.  I'm so glad you're into FE now, because you can finally understand what I had been hyping for the past 9 years!  And I'm so glad you still come around a little bit, even if it's not as often as it used to be.

Rex - You need to come into IRC more.  We've had a few convos via facebook chat lately but I'd love to see you with the group dynamic.  You were my favorite admin while you were here, and it's a shame you've calmed down a bit with the cows crap but you're a bro.

Bloatedfish/Mitchell - you're a guy I haven't seen in years or talked to in years, and it's really bad because the last couple times we've talked I was generally probably not in the mood to talk or whatever.  You were a pretty intelligent guy with some pretty interesting stuff to say and your presence in IRC over the past couple of years (where we were both going through undergrad) will be sincerely missed.  I hope you make time and come around.  I'll link you to this post on Skype to see.

Luke/Yoshi - lol my strangest memory of you is the inappropriate thing you called me on my birthday one year.  Also those late nights with a bunch of sprite and we just talked about absolutely nothing.  That was stupid crazy.  It's a shame that you can't do it again, because I sure as hell am up for it - I stay up until anywhere from 2 to 6am CST these days, which I guess is way after you wake up over in stupid depressing Wales.

Dan Dan - I really miss you.  Your incredible wit and comedic timing but also the fact that you were a calming presence despite everything.  I think that's the most underrated thing about you; things don't really get to you and you don't take things personally which lets you ground a conversation before it gets too hot.  Hope that made sense and I didn't butcher too many metaphors!

Turner - it's been 5 years since we were eternally pissed off at the state of the forum right?  I'm glad we've both calmed down, and I hope you come onto IRC more and talk because lord knows I don't see you enough.  You were always pretty frank but a good dude to talk to.

Bluffy - remember when I thought of you like my little sister?  Seems like it's been forever since we properly got a chance to talk, I remember we'd stay up late just talking and complaining about things to each other.  I hope we can start doing that again, especially cause we're in the same time zone now!  I'm glad you're not spending your life on your back!

Rob - this is another dude where we would just stay up and talk about stupid crap and complain all the time.  It was nice when we were teenagers, but sadly we're both too busy to keep that up AND MSN is dead.  I hope you get everything sorted out and you can come back and post more and come onto IRC more or something...

Alex/CS10 - you were always a nice guy and I remember when we were talking a bit back you hadn't changed a bit.  It was a nice talk even though it was late for me and I was just rambling.

Kay - what the hell happened to you too?  You're never around either, but you're posting on facebook about stuff that I may or may know about AND I'm happy to see that you've played Radiant Historia.  I've never seen someone on this forum more positive than you (at least not that I recall) and it's definitely something nice to see.

Joeno - I'm sorry for everything that happened a while back and I don't think any of us were right.  I'm glad I've earned enough trust from this place to manage IRC, and it's really cool to see IRC flourishing again.  I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we really appreciate the work you've put into this place, even if we've butted heads a lot in the past.

Del - I don't think we really knew each other that well beyond like acquaintances until this past year, but man you are a cool dude.  I think it's funny and entertainment for everyone else to see us just viciously attacking each other, but I'm glad I made you a halfop because you're keeping up with voicing people and you haven't done much of anything rash.

GL/KEROU/Alex - Man I really found you annoying for a while, it seemed like you complained a little too much.  Over the past year, you've improved greatly to the point where I really, really, really enjoy seeing you on IRC and talking to you.  I just wish you were noctural again so we could chat way into the night, but I think it's better for the both of us that we don't see that happen.

sylar - I really like reading the things you have to say, to be honest, and I may be one of those rare people that think you're a nice person but just a little abrasive.  I really think you can afford to be less short with people but it's really nice to still see you post on this forum, and it's also nice having someone who agrees with me that is much, much better at writing than I am.

Liz/supergrunt/Kpyna/whatever - Even though you're a New England fan and much younger than me, you're still pretty great.  Another person I haven't seen enough on the forum, but I'm happy you're in college and not screwed over by that incident a few years back.  You're funny and you snark at me pretty greatly, and you were also the only person from this site I texted at some point!

Kit - SO GLAD you're in the US, but the part that sucks is that you're so far away regardless.  It's a 7 hour drive from Maryland!  I'm glad you're enjoying the US, I'm glad I actually convinced you to watch a Ravens game, and it's nice to have another person here to text without an App even though we don't do it much.  I wish you also came around here because you had so much more energy than everyone else, and actually I take back what I said to Kay about her positivity - only second to you.

Brin - it's been absolutely forever since we've talked and we used to be really close.  Now, not nearly so much, but you've been the best person to complain to when I was growing up and somewhat depressed.  I know you basically don't have many ties to this forum anymore and you never liked Pokemon but at least you're on facebook!

Rikimaru - man you're a crazy dude, I remember our old flamewars and we somehow became friends out of that.  We had a nice exchange of music for a while before we both just parted ways due to timing and just us being busy in general.  It's a shame you don't come around as much, but c'est la vie.  You're hilarious but you're a dick.

Raph - still a robot but it's so nice to see you come around.  I still remember that really cool battle we had that went to like 79 turns and ended because of a Swampert critical at an opportune time for you.  It was even throughout, completely back and forth, and I don't remember all the details but I remember it's still my favorite battle to this day.  You were always a really super helpful guy and it's great to see you aruond.

Xagor - the other robot and it's also nice to see you come around occassionally.  Nice to see another physics PhD/PhD candidate that's as much as a nerd as me, because all the other people in my year aren't.  Hope all is well with you.

Maikeru - I remember you pretty fondly and it's a shame you don't come around at all.  It's been forever and it's a shame that things happened how they did...  I remember we'd talk about band at night and I just remember we really hated each other before we just became very good friends.  It's a shame EmpireIRC went down the way it did.  I just remember a time when vortex was the only server that was left.

Claire - It's really nice to see you around still, always a funny and interesting person to see post even though we haven't really talked directly in forever.  I'm still waiting for that sprite!

Tim/Enigma - I just remember we used to butt heads a lot and we always disagreed with each other at some point.  I'm not even sure over what, it was over some really pitiful stuff, but I don't see you at all and you don't respond to ANYTHING on facebook!  But you were smart and funny and most importantly gay which made it all round out.  Damn though you need to come by, and your post count is fake!!!

The Wroth/Sam - it's been a while too, and I'm still one of like 3 Americans on your facebook mwahaha!  You started the whole "pokemon first name pokemon last name" thing a while back with MUHEDicham (even though I realize now you said that because you pronounced my name wrong) but you're a bro, have always been, and I'm hoping to see you around on facebook some more.

I've missed people and I'm almost at the limit but I really appreciate most people I've met here and I just hope that a bunch of you guys come back even if it'll just be brief!  I'm hoping to stay on here for forever more and I'm hoping that we can bring this place back to the level of activity it used to have!

Debate / The Darren Wilson case & Corruption in Ferguson
« on: November 26, 2014, 21:38 »
Yeah so another case of a white cop killing an african american teen because the white cop is supposedly racist.  Let's bring the arguments in here.

I'm personally on the side where there's racism in society that causes this.  My viewpoint is a little more nuanced than that but that's basically the tl;dr summary.  I'll respond to people as they come in.

Obviously a rough translation but did anyone else catch this from various translations?  It is actually very nice to hear about this at any rate, hoping it's not some sort of stupid ass dream world type stuff.

So in honor of Super Smash Brothers coming out on Friday, I'm going to do a smash week.  Unfortunately I haven't played THAT many different video games so I'll do what I've got.

My plan is to go over a bunch of series, link pictures of a stage, and describe the origin and analyze the music around it.  I said I'd post this yesterday, but I'll put around 30-40 tracks on here for three series that I am familiar with.  If anyone wants to write about one of Yoshi/Metroid/Pikmin/Mother/Donkey Kong, please PM me and I will give you some instructions.

Previous threads:

Week 1:  Pokemon Black and White
Week 2:  Radiant Historia

Let me start with Metal Gear!

I don't know how many people have played Metal Gear, but this is Shadow Moses Island, where the entirety of the MGS1 and a fifth of MGS4 takes place.  In MGS1, Solid Snake was sent out to investigate Shadow Moses because they were developing a nuclear warhead overseed by FOXHOUND.  FOXHOUND's goal was to get the body of Big Boss and a billion dollars in exchange for the Metal Gear unit - REX - which would launch a nuclear warhead.  As Snake goes further into Shadow Moses, he discovers the origin of his own birth and the existence of his twin brother, Liquid Snake.

In MGS4, Shadow Moses is infamous for the fight between Metal Gear REX and Metal Gear RAY.  Liquid Ocelot is here (basically Liquid Snake in Ocelot's body) and his goal is to take the Rail Gun from Metal Gear REX and basically assault JD.

Theme of Love is one of the first tracks to actually come out of this game when it was first released.  It's a very epic tune, fast paced, and very dynamic - hitting a sombre point.  But it's also significantly different from its original game which is a much, much more sombre tune sung entirely in Hebrew.  The "Action Version" is what you see in Brawl, and you'll notice a lot of similarities in rhythm but a very different tone.  MGS4's version suits the tone of the entire game, which is very melancholy and it also plays in the background of Snake's famous "War has changed" speech.

Encounter is mainly from the first MGS game, and this is a little different from the original theme because it fits a fighting game more.  The original one gave a sense of urgency but it's also rather low-key because MGS is a stealth game and it played whenever you were caught by guards and they sent their goons after you.  It's definitely a very well-arranged track, and the original track was also solid.

Theme of Tara is from Metal Gear (the original one).  It definitely has a James Bond-esque vibe to it in Brawl, the original was 8-bit and it attempted to convey the same thing, but alas the 8-bit lacks the instruments to do it.  I'm not too familiar with the original Metal Gears but from my understanding this was the original Metal Gear theme.

Yell "Dead Cell" is a very fast paced track and it's not very different to the original theme found in Metal Gear Solid 2.  Dead Cell was the organization in MGS2 whose purpose was to imitate FOXHOUND in order to mindscrew Raiden (it's a long and very interesting story).  Their entire purpose was to carry out the orders of the President (George Sears - aka Solidus Snake) and they eventually joined Solidus Snake into forming the Sons of Liberty to take over the Big Shell, Arsenal Gear, and Metal Gear RAY.  Their entire organization is a series of boss fights in MGS2.

Next up is Fire Emblem.

Castle Siege is the lone Fire Emblem stage representative in this game, and the two characters from the series (in Brawl) were Ike and Marth.  The purpose of this stage is to outline the three typical places where Fire Emblem battles occur; outside of a castle of some sort, inside of the castle, and inside of a volcano (which happens in almost every game I swear).  The stage transitions between the various things.  It is not actually based on any specific area in the series.

Brawl naturally has a nice assortment of tracks from the game.  The first you may all recognize is the Fire Emblem track from Melee, which combines longtime staple Together We Ride (Shadow Dragons version, FE3 version, original version, and FE7 version) with the Fire Emblem Theme.  To this day I cannot figure out what that little transition piece between the two is but it is a very nice medley that definitely helped the series breakout in the west.

Attack is a mix of the regular battle theme, "Strike" and the boss battle theme, "Rise to the Challenge" from FE7.  It's a very good track that actually makes both of these themes sound significantly better, and the transition between the two pieces was quite smooth and well done.

Ike's Theme is a track from Fire Emblem:  Radiant Dawn which is known in that game as "Eternal Bonds."  This track is a map theme that played whenever the different factions of the army (Crimean Army, Greil Mercenaries, Laguz Army, and eventually the Begnion refugees) combined to go against the Dawn Army and the other Begnion Army.  Very powerful track.

Crimean Army Sortie is actually one of my favorite tracks ever.  It's from Path of Radiance unedited, and it plays after Ike is promoted to Lord (and General of the Crimean army), after one of the most emotionally charged chapters in the game.  It's more atmospheric than Eternal Bonds/Ike's Theme but it is a very exhilarating track that represents that moment in the game so well.

Against the Black Knight is another one from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn which plays when you fight, well, the Black Knight.  Black Knight killed Ike's father, Greil, early in Path of Radiance and he shows up all over Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn as what basically amounts to Ike's rival (because they both learned swordsmanship under Greil).  Definitely a very foreboding piece for one of the most important and mysterious characters in the series.

Preparing to Advance is from Fire Emblem:  The Sacred Stones and it's the theme for the preparations menu, where you pick which characters go into battle and arrange their equipment accordingly.  I'm glad that they put this one in out of all of them, because it's actually one of the better tracks.  They also made it more fitting in a fighting game by replacing the tympani and bass drum with bells (giving it a much more lively tone than as opposed to more of a military-esque tone).

Gaming / Weekly Video Game OST Discussion 2 - Radiant Historia
« on: September 08, 2014, 09:53 »
Previous Discussion
Week 1:  Pokemon Black & White

In week 2 I will take a look at a more obscure game named Radiant Historia, developed by Atlus Inc.  Because it is obscure I will give as much background as possible.

It's a JRPG in a steampunk setting, where legends of the Apocalypse are foretold and the main character, Stocke, is given the ability to alter the course of time to prevent it using a book known as the White Chronicle.  It's intriguing because it involves two timelines that Stocke must hop between - one in which he becomes a spy working for a man named Heiss (the agency is known as Specint) and the other in which he joins a faction of the military led by his best friend Rosch (known as the Rosch Brigade).

The OST is very compact (~25 pieces) so I will sample around 8 pieces for you guys, and of course Kay can chime in again with more pieces she likes.

This piece is known as Radiant Historia which is, of course, the title of the game.  The flavor text reads as follows:

The Chronicle tells of history engraved by man into the memories of the stars above.  The Chroncile searches these engraved histories for a pen that will rewrite them.  It falls to thee to become the time's master and carve a path to the future.

It gives a serene yet sorrowful vibe, and the background seems to attempt portray a clock.  This is what Historia (which is a place in the game) looks like:

Mechanical Kingdom is the theme of the first town in the game, and Stocke's hometown, Alistel.  Much of the plot of Radiant Historia centers around Alistel or coming back to Alistel, and it's where both the army and Specint are located.  It's a very steampunk-y town but it's where a whole bunch of people seem to exist - including the prophet who will save humanity from the apocalypse.  At any rate, here's a picture for reference.

Blue Radiance is the name of the primary battle theme.  I'm not quite sure why it's called Blue Radiance, but it's quite melodic and it's relatively fast paced.  It seems to get more urgent as it progresses through, and to top it all off it's one of those few themes that doesn't get on your nerves after a while.

The boss battle theme, The Edge of Green gives a very heavy militaristic vibe while remaining with the melodic theme of the soundtrack.  A lot of pieces here seem to give a sense of urgency but they are also very smooth and flowing, which seems to fit with the feel of the game.

The Garden Where the Celestite Lies is the town theme of Celestia, where the Satyros live.  A big theme of the game is the war between the beastkind and the humankind, and the Satyros are among the beastkind that live in isolation (due to their hatred of humans).  They're also magical beings; I guess that sense of wonder is in the background (I can't recognize the instrument).  At any rate, you can kinda feel it; it's a bunch of pissed off people that just want to be left alone.  It doesn't help that you hit the village at a rather depressing part of the game, where Rosch became severely injured and Alistel is in a state of chaos.

Fun fact:  around a minute in (thanks to a youtube comment) it changes time.  They say 3/4 but it has a very triplet-y vibe, and it feels more like a 1/4 or 3/8 to me.

I can't find any good shots of the village so here's the inn.

Where the Wind and Feathers Return is your typical "sad moment" theme.  At the beginning of the story, for instance, two of your party members are killed so Stocke uses the White Chronicle so he could change history in a way that prevents their deaths.  There are also many bad endings that this plays in, and I can't list any of them in fear of spoiling the game, but some of the bad endings involve a party member's death or someone losing hope.  And by the way, there is a lot of death in this game, so this piece ends up playing quite a bit.

An Earnest Desire of Grey is the final boss theme and it's quite possibly one of the most powerful final boss themes I've heard.  You can tell it's the pinnacle of all of this chaos created by the Chronicles just by the music, and it's definitely a pumping song that leaves you with a lot of emotion.  This boss fight is long but not too repetitive, and the piece is capped off by one of the best endings in a JRPG I think, and I'm definitely not going to spoil it - play the game yourself and get all 270 nodes like I did!  Or look up an LP.  It's really an amazing game.

The final boss says "He is the only hope left in the world... If I can't protect that hope, then what other use is my life?"  Doesn't make much sense out of context but it's the most powerful quote in the game.

-Historia- Words of Songs is the credits theme.  I'm not huge at all on japanese music but this one is something special.  It's very soothing, very smooth, flowing, and her voice is ethereal.  Not aggressive, not trying too much, just soothing to listen to and beautiful.  Here's a rough translation of the lyrics if anyone wants to see them.

There you go.  Hopefully you guys have some context behind the music if you've never played the games, but at the worst just enjoy the music; it's really really nice.

Gaming / Bravely Second

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh7SaqHHwus

I can look up translations and whatnot to this, because I have no idea what Agnes is doing, but looks like there's gonna be a gunner class.

Bravely Default was a really solid game.

The way it's gonna work is I'm going to choose 8-10 pieces from a video game and talk about them.  People are free to chime in, hype up the OST, or comment on the OST; maybe bring up an alternate interpretation.  My piece is going to be dry, but my purpose is to provoke the discussion as opposed to head it.

I'm going to start with something we're all familiar with - Pokemon Black/White OST.  Black/White's OST is actually remarkable amongst Pokemon OSTs, because many of these tracks are soothing and melodic which appears to go along with the theme of harmony between people and Pokemon.

I'm going to start out light with Lacunosa Town's music.  It's quite possibly one of the most soothing themes I've heard from a Pokemon game.  Lacunosa Town represents a town that closed itself off to prevent Kyurem from taking people away to feast on them.  Lacunosa's name originates from the term "lacunosus" which is a type of cloud that represents a sort of fence, which relates quite readily back to the purpose of neutralizing Kyurem.

Driftveil City is actually a very lively piece which has a bit of a heavy side due to the strength of the bass in the background.  It's a town filled with construction workers and mining, so it seems fitting to have an upbeat theme, probably to motivate the workers.

Relic Castle is a theme I'm shocked with because it sounds a lot like a typical RPG desert theme.  This is one of those tracks that you'd listen to and you probably wouldn't trace it back to Pokemon, but it definitely gives a mystical vibe that's necessary due to the abundance of Darumaka as well as basically a tomb (where Volcarona - basically a seraphim moth - resides).

Nimbasa City is a bubbly city center type place.  Castelia City may be like New York, but this is an upbeat theme that exists in basically the entertainment capital of Unova, given it has a ferris wheel and various sporting facilities.

The Elite Four Battle theme is quite possibly one of the more dark and foreboding elite four themes.  Given that there's Ghost, Psychic, and Dark Elite Four members it's very fitting - the Marshal ruins it a little bit.  You'll also notice less than a minute and a half in that you have a refrain of the Hoenn Elite Four Battle theme which really threw a lot of us conspiracy nuts about the RS remakes in a loop.

Route 10 has some beautiful music with it - it's on the way to Victory Road after you get your 8 badges.  It definitely has a huge feel of triumph, and around here you start running into Pokemon like Rufflet and Mienfoo who evolve at a late level but have really good offensive stats to go along with them so you can basically "plug and play" into your lineup.

Opelucid City is a very interesting city because it has two different themes and appearaces depending on your version.  There's even two different gym leaders!

They're both quite different in tone and atmosphere while retaining roughly the same melody.  Obviously the white version is more acoustic given the town's more natural and classical look, whereas the black version is more electronic given the town's more technological and modern feel.  It actually outlies the contrast between the two games and it was done quite well.

(Each image has a link)

I'd like to finally highlight Route 4 and all of its different variations
Autumn which appears to have vibraphone to give a very fall-like vibe.
Winter which starts out with a light xylophone to give a bit of a crystal-y vibe associated with winter.
Spring which starts with a light flute to represent "waking up" from the winter so to speak, like spring.
Summer at last, which starts with a strong trumpet that transitions into the main theme.  It seems to give a vibe of more sunshine.

The downside is that the differences only happen when you first enter the route - but it is a very nice and subtle touch that gives the ambiance of each season.  Undella Town has a much starker contrast between the seasons in their pieces, but I didn't like that theme as much so I didn't include it :X

Enjoy!  I'll be doing a more obscure game next week.  Talk, offer critique, write poetry and your own interpretations of the music.

It's going to be released in Arcades in Japan for now but it could make its appearance as a game...  We'll see.
