hello fellow forumers!!!

i'm going to japan in a week or so, and want a cool little list of things to do!! i am quite underprepared. has anyone here been? where should i go? what shouldn't i eat?

Their public transport is supposed to have greater-than-German levels of efficiency. The bullet train should be an experience in itself.

i'm there for six weeks, so pretty much all the major cities + okinawa. i got a list of all the bits that the internet recommends to anyone, but just in case anyone here has been and found some hidden goodies, thought i'd ask!

Sounds like you'll have a lot of time to fill. I'm sure you've already found lots of touristy places to visit. Like the Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto etc.

I've mainly seen Osaka and places near there when I've been over. Weather shouldn't be as blisteringly hot for you though. If you're into nerdy sort of stuff, then I'm sure you're aware of Akihabara, but personally I prefer Osaka's Nipponbashi.

If you're out there for 6 weeks then you'll actually be in the country at the same time as me.

yeah, all those spots. i've actually wanted to go to kinkaku-ji for a while now. i've just heard that touristy spots are always more expensive since they know people will pay for them. me on the otherhand, i'm poor. i just wanna go to the NGE theme park! #life.

Well touristy stuff anywhere is going to be expensive, because they know people will pay for it. I can't really recommend much outside of that kind of stuff though, since I've not really experienced much of it myself.

It's either been touristy stuff or just spending time with girlfriend and her family.

I'm going to be out there from the 7th of Jan (assuming everything goes okay on this end), going to be starting up a post-doc at Osaka U.
