Gaming / Mewtwo coming to Smash 4!
« on: October 24, 2014, 00:56 »
Nintendo has just dropped a bomb, revealing that Mewtwo will be playable in Smash as free DLC in Spring 2015 to players who own both 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash. I'm sure this is going to cause some complaining, but free DLC is nice DLC, especially when it's of this magnitude.

Let's hope he's learned how to fight since Melee. Discuss!

In a bizarre and unexpected twist, two generation 1 Pokemon have been revealed to Mega Evolve in OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, along with the Latios and Latias Megas found within the code of X/Y.

Beedril gains Adaptability and retains Bug/Poison typing and gains higher Attack and Speed.

Pidgeot, somewhat more interestingly, gains No Guard and higher Sp. Attack. Finally carving out a niche for yourself among other Normal/Flying types, eh? Spam that Hurricane!

The Eon Ticket will make a return as an event item to obtain Latias in OmegaRuby and Latios in AlphaSapphire, and you will be able to fly around on Latios and Latias using an item called Eon Flute, and find Pokemon in the sky and clouds. Older legendary Pokemon such as Reshiram, Zekrom, Dialga and Palkia can be obtained in this way, and it is said that all non-event legendaries will be obtainable in gen 6 now.

So... this is quite mind-boggling, to be honest! They just keep revealing more and more amazing features! What do you think about all of this?

Gaming / Smash Bros. With Friends (3DS)
« on: October 08, 2014, 16:50 »
Okay I held out on making this because these topics never go anywhere, but I need friends to play this with and I see you all out there with Smash Bros., hogging the fun to yourself! C'MON AND SHARE!

Okay, so add your 3DS FC and just post in the topic when you're free to play I guess. Also what rules you play by. Being on IRC is cool too if you wanna chat between matches.

Your Sprite Art / 120x120 Mega scratch sprites!
« on: September 19, 2014, 06:21 »
With the advent of X/Y came Mega Evolutions, but it also brought about 3D models for every Pokemon. While I love the 3D models, I'm also a big fan of sprite art, so I've begun making Mega Evolutions sprites with a 120x120 pixel limit, which is what they might have used if the series had continued with sprite based art!

Tournaments / monthly prize tournament! This round: NU!
« on: September 05, 2014, 09:23 »
So after some interest was shown in the idea topic, I've decided to setup a monthly tournament open to anyone to enter (except me). Why enter? Well here's why! The prize for each tournament will be a clone of something on my list! I may do themed prizes to fit with the tournament theme, but we'll see how much interest this drums up.

All you have to do to enter is simply put your Showdown name, timezone, and available times. To avoid people signing up and not following through, I will be allowing two days of signups and then you'll be paired up for battles. If any problems occur, please PM me and I will sort them out as best as I can. The aim is to try to finish these tournaments before a motnh passes, so please try to get battles done as soon as possible.

Check the below post often, as it will be updated with all the information needed every time there is a new tournament.

This will be a diary of mine and Dick's attempt at playing through Pokemon X with Nuzlocke conditions. The rules are:

-Any Pokemon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.

- The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
- All Pokemon must be nicknamed
- Considering a black out/white out to be "game over," even if there are Pokémon left in the PC.
- Going to options and making the battle style "set". Making you unable to switch out between your foes' Pokémon.
- No catching/using of legendaries.
- Exp. Share will be turned off.
- Gift Pokemon are not allowed
 >Exception is given to Lapras only if you need a Pokemon to use Surf, and Lapras cannot be used in battle

We'll be starting off with a scene setter, and then we'll be posting our diary entry updates in a story style. Without further adieu...

Being an archeologist in this age is the most exciting thing I could possibly imagine. My line of work leads me to not only discover long-lost Pokemon, but to revitalize them, bring them back to life, and re-breed the species out of extinction. My findings have led to the rebirth of such species as Aerodactyl, Shieldon, and Archen. After what I've just found, those discoveries pale in comparison.

"What is it?" The man's voice cracked in fear of the monstrousity before him. "I don't know exactly, Kain. I found this stone while excavating the cave. When I touched it, Aerodactyl's Pokeball began shaking violently, and it destroyed the ball by itself. It grabbed the stone and transformed into an uncontrollable monster. It was only with the help of Poliwhirl and Sandslash that I was able to subdue it, but Poliwhirl's Hypnosis won't last forever. It crash-landed on that cliff once it fell asleep. We have to climb up and retrieve it." Kain looked bewildered, but nodded in agreement of what his co-worker Allan said. The two had worked together for just about four months now and Kain was just beginning to learn the ropes of archeology, but had studied under Allan tirelessly. As the two men scaled the jagged wall of the cliff, a deafening screech echoed from above, making their blood run cold. Aerodactly had awakened and flew from the cliff like lightning, turning to assault the two men. Allan quickly climbed onto the cliff and pulled Kain with him, the two just narrowly avoiding Aerodactyl's claws. The scraping sound against the wall was painful to listen to, causing Kain to cover his ears while Allan screamed for Poliwhirl to Hydro Pump. Aerodactyl gracefully swooped out of the way of the attack and began turning to make another pass at them. Kain released Heliolisk and issued a Thunderbolt, clipping the wing of Aerodactyl as it flew at them.

Their eyes widened, and they knew it was too late to act. Aerodactyl smashed into the two men and rolled off the small cliff, tumbling down and hitting the floor, unconscious. Kain laid on his back, and looked around, unable to locate Allan. "Help, please!" The urgent cry came from over the cliff and Kain turned to look over the edge, holding his ribcage. Allan was hanging by his left arm, and reaching up with his right. In this moment, Kain eyes fixated on the Aerodactyl on the ground, motionless. "Kain, please, pull me up!" Allan pleaded, feeling his grip loosening. Kain's face twisted into a sinister grin...

"Come on, boys, we don't have all day!" Mom's voice echoed through our small new home. Our family and neighbors just moved to Vaniville Town to follow our father's line of work. It was the same story every 3-4 years: Dad would get an itch to go abroad to make more new discoveries, and we'd get dragged along with him.

"We're not even finished unpacking mom, geez!" I retorted, stamping down the stairs in a huff. When I saw Dad was on the holochip, I froze and straightened up. "Oh, hi Dad!" I said nervously, hoping I wouldn't receive another holo-scolding. "Leon, call your brother down too, this is important" He said seriously, but before I had a chance, Sebastion came rushing down the stairs. "Hey Dad!" Sebastion shouted a bit too excitedly, freezing up when he saw Dad's stern expression. "I've sent you two a parcel containing two eggs of fossilized Pokemon that we've been breeding. I want you both to take one. Don't worry, we've managed to discover that these Pokemon are much more tame than their pre-historic counterparts. You two are finally old enough to join me in my field of work, as unpaid interns of course. I believe the cave we've been excavating may house some incredible finds, and I want you two to be here when we unearth whatever is hidden in this cave. Please hurry you two, I can't dely excavation much longer."

With that, the Holo Clip communication ended. There was no time for a reply, and Mom looked visibly concerned. Before anything could be said, though, the doorbell rang, and I went to the door. A man stood with a box, grinning ear to ear with a sharp gaze. "Hello! You must be Leon. I trust your father has explained everything, so I'll make my visit brief." The man shoved the box at me and leaned in close. "Whatever happens from now on, just remember that it is all happening for a reason." he stated before turning and walking away. I ignored whatever that was supposed to mean and opened the box, grabbing and Egg, and Sebastion did the same. A claw broke through the egg and I peeled the shell back to reveal a Kabuto, an ancient Pokemon that has only been revitalized and bred in laboratories within the last 15 years. The rush of having my own Pokemon felt incredible and I ran out the door without wasting a single moment.

I've hatched Kabuto and began training it. He's a powerful Pokemon, and can take hits exceptionally well! This is so exciting!

Lloyd the Kabuto level 6
Smack Down

(We've decided to give Kabuto Smack Down as it's around the same base power as a starter's STAB attack and Dick's Pokemon gets two incredible STABs right away)

In a very unexpected twist, the Korean Pokemon site accidentally revealed Mega Slowbro and Audino.

Slowbro gains Shell Armor and appears to be swallowed by Shellder.

Audino gains Normal/Fairy typing and has Healer.

What do you think of these new Megas? Personally, the designs are alright for me, but the abilities are downgrades, as both preferred Regenerator before Mega Evolution.

Corocoro leaks have confirmed that Mega Salamence, Mega Altaria, and Mega Lopunny have been confirmed for OR/AS!

Mega Salamence gains Aerilate. I can tell you right now, without a sliver of doubt in my mind, that Mega Salamence will be horribly broken and quickbanned upon release.

Mega Altaria gains Dragon/Fairy typing, and Pixelate! This could be interesting, and also Game Freak apparently doesn't like defensive strategies at all, so let's all play hyper offense.

Mega Lopunny gains Normal/Fighting typing, with Scrappy ability, allowing both STABs to hit Ghost types. This is certainly interesting, and is the first non-Hoenn Mega Pokemon to get a Mega Evolution, besides Diancie, who is an event legend.

Edit: In addition, the special Pikachu that can be dressed up gets a special move with each costume. Pikachu Rock Star gets Meteor Mash, Pikachu PhD gets Electric Terrain, Pikachu Pop Star gets Draining Kiss, Pikachu Belle gets Icicle Crash, and Pikachu Libre gets Flying Press.

Edit 2 apparently you receive a shiny Beldum in-game with Metagrossite.

Team Building / Smogon has banned Aegislash from OU
« on: August 03, 2014, 04:36 »
I'm sure this is a heated topic for some people, so before commenting, read the topic please.

Smogon has determined that Aegislash will be banned from OU. The topic for it can be found here, but I will try my best to establish the reason it was banned within this topic and in a short summary (less than the 70 pages in their topic). Remember that I'm just re-stating what has been said, and not necessarily my opinion.

  • Aegislash is impossible to switch into with every commonly run set. Physical walls like Landorus-T, Gliscor and Skarmory are destroyed by STAB Shadow Ball, while special walls like Blissey, Heatran and Sylveon are all 1-2HKO'd by Sacred Sword or Iron Head.
  • Aegislash's best counter, Mandibuzz, is comfortable 2HKO'd by the Head Smash set, with a 25% chance to OHKO with Stealth Rock up, and is also beaten by the Substitute Toxic set.
  • King's Shield creates 50/50 scenarios. The opponent can try to setup on an expected KS, but if Aegislash doesn't KS, the opponent is getting hit by an attack backed by base 150 attacking stats, which is the same as normal Deoxys. Any contact move you try to use will immediately lower your Attack to -2 with King's Shield and give Aegislash near Deoxys-Defense stats with a better typing.
  • With Aegislash's low Speed, coupled with a -Speed nature, going last is actually beneficial for it, allowing it to tank a hit, change form, and strike back with incredible power. King's Shield has priority, allowing it to revert immediately without ever being forced to take a hit in Blade form unless Taunted.

Given the above reasons, people that qualified for a vote (by reaching a certain ranking on the suspect ladder) voted in favor of removing Aegislash from OU. Now that it's gone, how does this effect OU?

Psychic types reclaim the metagame. Latios, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Medicham and Mega Alakazam are going to be huge without Aegislash to hold them back. Even using Latios and one of these megas on the same team is a fantastic idea now because you can just muscle through resists with STAB Draco Meteors, Hyper Voices, Psyshocks, and High Jump Kicks (off the second highest Attack stat in the game).

Latios has one counter. One. And if they predict wrong, Surf 2HKOs standard TTar off Specs Latios.

Mega Gardevoir's best counters can all be dealt with through coverage moves. Focus Blast 2HKOs Heatran. Hyper Voice deals out tons of damage to anything that doesn't resist it. Psychic remove Mega Venusaur as being an option to switch into Hyper Voice. Hyper Voice and Focus Blast both 2HKO Tyranitar.

Here's a list of things that can switch into Mega Medicham:

Mega Alakazam has insane Speed. So insane that it can freely run Modest nature without worrying about being outsped by anything except Scarf Pokemon with higher than 70 Speed running a +Speed nature, giving it higher Speed and power than Timid Alakazam. It can even run Timid and outspeed Scarfers if you want, but generally you'll want to run Modest for the huge power you gain with it.

Dark types? Every single one of these Pokemon has a Fighting type move they can use along with it. The only potential answers are Spiritomb and Sableye, which both lose to Mega Gardevoir's Hyper Voice.

I think we're about to see many more bans. Discuss.

Fancy Pattern Vivillon is being distributed via Mystery Gift in celebration of 100 million GTS trades! The download runs from today to July 31st, so download it now while you can!

There are no preset IVs or anything, but it does come with an exclusive event move, Hold Hands! This move allows you to... hold hands with the opposing Pokemon... and... that makes you both happy... and then they kill you! 8D

Your Sprite Art / Shovel Knight / Pokemon Crossover(s?!)
« on: July 06, 2014, 01:59 »
So after playing through Shovel Knight twice, I have fallen in love with this game, and decided to honor it in the only way I know how... Pokemon sprite crossovers! But what Pokemon could fit the role of Hero of Shovelry? Well... how about Pinsir?

This took a couple weeks of work, on and off, with a lot of advice and constructive criticism from my good buddy Utack. I really like how it turned out though. :)

How about you guys? What do you think? Any suggestions for future Shovel Knight characters? I've got a couple ideas in mind already!

Team Building / Baton Pass (finally) nerfed
« on: June 16, 2014, 04:44 »
As of today, using more than 3 Pokemon with the move Baton Pass on the same team is banned. While I myself rarely struggled with these teams, I recognize how completely broken and unhealthy they are for the metagame. So, let's discuss this decision, and the impact it will have on the metagame.

I think we will see Clefable, Quagsire, Smeargle, Sylveon, and Vaporeon dropping from OU in the coming months. Espeon and Clefable still have a chance, especially Espeon, as it's not completely reliant on BP to be useful, but the rest of them are either OU because they're good in BP, or they're good for being an emergency stop to BP (Even though neither Quagsire nor Clefable actually stopped BP well at all).

I think this is great for the metagame. Scolipede will still be an awesome Baton Passer, Espeon still has Magic Bounce, and BP is still a viable strategy, but full team BP is something we really did not need in the metagame. Still waiting on the Pinsirite ban, and I'm still waiting to hear a single valid argument about why Latios is OU.

What do you think about this? What do you expect will rise and fall in usage with this new ban? Do you think the metagame will stabilize, or do things still need to be dealt with in order to achieve a balanced metagame?

Gaming / Mario Kart 8 club!
« on: June 01, 2014, 13:02 »
So with Mario Kart 8 just having been released, I thought it might be a good idea to have everyone post their Wii U username and setup friendly competitions! Just post your Wii U username and I'll update the first post with them. If we get enough people here, we could host tournaments! :)

Laprasking (Angelic Lapras King)
Clairefable (Clairefable)
SapphireRobin (RubyRobin)

We know they're coming, so let's talk about which move tutors you'd like to see for OR/AS. Here's a short list of the ones I think we need:

Knock Off
Hyper Voice
Fire Punch
Ice Punch
Thunder Punch
Earth Power
Iron Head
Giga Drain
Drain Punch
Dragon Pulse
Gunk Shot
Pain Split
Stealth Rock - Forgot this one, this is important

I think those are the most important ones we need to return, but what else would you like to see as a tutor?
