One type team
« on: July 29, 2017, 21:14 »
Thinking of maybe playing a game with only pokemon of a certain type. Maybe a gen one game. What type do you think I should use?

Not dragon! I don't want a team of Dragonites! Or ghost!

I am wrong that grass types are bad at least in gen 1 and isn't that much variety?

Not many psychic types either are there?

Grass types are actually quite good in Gen 1, particularly in the early stages. The first two gyms are weak against grass types. The last gym as well, if I'm not mistaken. The seventh gym may be a bit tricky though.

At least one gym is going to be tricky whatever I do!

I thought grass was bad because of crappy learnsets (poisonpowder, stun spore, etc)

I doubt I'll do fire. Other than charmander, fire types appear quite late.

Theres quite a few posion types, all throughout the game.  Some of them are terrible (beedrill, for example) but it does give you things like the nidoran lines, and thanks to dual typing you could actually get decent coverage.

Status moves are actually useful.
Is the opponent moving faster than you? Use Stun Spore to paralyze them.
Is the opponent hitting you too hard, too often? Use Sleep Powder to prevent them from attacking at all!

Moves like Growl and Leer could be considered useful as well. Take advantage of everything that a grass type is capable of.

If you're going with the Gen 1 remakes, Bulk Up and Growth are good moves to raise stats.
Hmm, it seems that Breloom is the only grass type in Gen 3 that can use Bulk Up.

I'm all about offence! I don't care about status moves such as growl!

I will rarely use moves like Poison powder.

Tbh, I don't pay any sort of attention to stats (if I have a stat boosting thing, I'll use it on the pokemon with the lowest stat)

What about  bug?

Butterfree, Beedrill, Venomoth, Parasect, Scyther and Pinsir are the only ones I can think of!

Gen 1 monotype is not really a good idea because you would only be able to pick a few types to get a full team of 6. Water is a decent pick, though that would make the 4th gym a nightmare.

Thinking back on the poison thing, totally forgot that bulbasaur is part poison, so youd even be able to keep your starter. Plus i cant think of a single gen 1 gym you couldnt at least make a good stab at. Sorry, i guess i just really want to see how a poison only run would go, since its a pretty underused and unappreciated type in general, and im too lazy to try it myself.

At least electric doesn't resist water.

Tbh, a monotype team in any gen is not a good idea!

I can get a decent type coverage if I do poison! I can finally get that tentacruel I wanted for so long! And Venasaur, or Victreebel, Vileplume or Venomoth! Muk or Weezing?

I might play blue. Is Arbok any good?

Possible team:
Nidoking/Nidoqueen
Tentacruel
Venusaur/Victreebel/Vileplume
Golbat/Venomoth/Beedrill
Muk/Weezing
Haunter/Arbok (if Red)

Parasect isn't part poison, is it?

Parasect is Bug/Grass in all games, from Gen 1 to Gen 7.

Except for some Medals you get for defeating the E4 and Champion in BW2.

Tbh, a monotype team in any gen is not a good idea!

It's its own competitive ladder, so I wouldn't say that. Some types are obviously better than others for monotype (ex: psychic is obviously better for monotype than ice (which has gotten a little better this gen)), but most types can have a serviceable monotype team if built well and the player is capable of playing them well. Gen 1 has a lower amount of pokemon so it makes building a team a little more challenging (except for bug, normal, grass and water. There's always a lot of those). Water is generally a great monotype type to use in most generations, but poison is also definitely an option in Gen 1 due to how much more diverse it was then many of the other types with dual typing. However, if the player is capable enough, a monotype team is usually a decent enough team to win battles.

I love doing monotype run throughs, but gen 1 is exceptionally poor because there's only 151 Pokémon in the game (realistically more like 143 by you exclude stuff like the legendary Birds, Mew(two) and the dratini line) meaning there's very little room to choose your team. Ghost and dragon aren't possible, Dark and Steel aren't in so that's 4 excluded instantly

Still, anything beats fire monotype in Diamond and Pearl
