Title: Favourite Non-English Pokémon Names
Post by: Quapsel on December 04, 2011, 19:18
Yup, just what the title says. I grew up with the German pokémon names and some of them are just fantastic, so here's a list of my favourites:

Glumanda (Charmander)
Shiggy (Squirtle)
Quapsel (Poliwag)
Austos (Cloyster)
Aquana (Vaporeon)
Lavados (Moltres)

Endivie (Chikorita)
Karnimani (Totodile)
Blubella (Bellossom)
Papungha (Jumpluff)

Papinella (Beautifly)
Kappalores (Ludicolo)
Tengulist (Shiftry)
Eneco (Skitty)
Zobiris (Sableye)
Lepumentas (Claydol)

Panflam (Chimchar)

Felilou (Purrloin)
Kleoparda (Liepard)
Vegimak, Grillmak and Sodamak (Pansage, Pansear, Panpour)
Somniam (Munna)
Folikon (Swadloon)
Mollimorba (Gothita)
Quabbel (Frillish)

I also happen to like Paenteom as the Korean word for Gengar a lot.

That's it, I think. What are yours?

Denchura.

Galvantula in Japanese. I much prefer that name to Galvantula, but that's just me.

I also like the French name for Growlithe; Lupe.

I was traded a French Growlithe by my friend and I loved it =]

The Chinese name for Charmander, Siu Fo Long (or 小火龍), which literally translates to 'Small Fire Dragon'.
It's quite cute when you say it ;;

Riolu > Rioreu
Riolu > Lì Ōu Lù
Zorua > Joroa
Zorua > Suǒluóyǎ / Suǒluóyà
Rotom > Motisma
Rotom > Luò Tuō Mǔ

Eh.... I would have done Rotom's Korean name but, it's the same thing.

I am sure there was something strange with the Spanish version, but I do not remember what. HOWEVER...

Doublade's Korean name sounds.... awesome.

Ssangeomkil! It's really awesome if you say that name. Especially if you are a native Korean speaker.

EDIT: Any Korean Pokémon name is awesome.

It doesn't even look like a Rhino!

What were they thinking?
Title: Re: Favourite Non-English Pokémon Names

I can answer to this.

Rhino comes form Greek. ρινός (rinós), "nose". Look at its nose. It looks like a heart. Rhinolove. Nose of love.

Understood?

I like Pikachu. What? It technically counts as a non-English name given it is the ORIGINAL Japanese name to begin with and one of the few Pokemon never to be known by any other name.
