Title: A nice sprite contest. [r10 open for entries: version-exclusive mixes!]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 08, 2013, 14:12
I've made a contest topic, wow.

This is how it will work.
-I announce a specification for the round. e.g. mixes.
-You have 72 hours (3 days) to submit your sprite to me via PM.
-I put the sprites up in an anonymous poll (ooh).
-The poll will stay up for roughly 72 hours (3 days).
-Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd are then given accordingly, as well as an award for my personal favourite.
-Yes you can vote in the poll, yes you can vote for yourself if you want.
-Everyone has a lovely time.

Extra information:
-You do one round at a time, and you can enter as many or as few as you like, you don't have to sign up or anything.
-Places will not be saved. You either submit a sprite before the closing time or you don't. If you get yours to me just a bit late it doesn't matter, provided that I haven't yet set up the voting poll.
-The sprites that you submit to me will be reuploaded for the duration of this contest, and taken down once the poll is over.
-No gif animations, please, and no sprite tags (no adding your name).
-I will make your sprite transparent for you, if it isn't already.
-Only pixel art will be accepted. that is to say, no gradients or textures or brushes. The sprites should be made pixel by pixel, using flat colours (dithering is accepted). Put simply, they should match the style of the in-game sprites.
-Don't post your sprites here. It won't disqualify you, but if they're not PMd to me they won't be entered.
-If your sprite doesn't fit the specifications for the round then I won't accept it. Because I'm a killjoy. So yeah, read the below "details" carefully. Most of it should be obvious/same as usual.

Ok I think that's everything. Let me know if you have any questions.

Now accepting submissions for round 10:
Version-exclusive mixes
(http://pkmn.net/sprites/blackwhite/front/630.png)(http://pkmn.net/sprites/blackwhite/front/15.png)(http://pkmn.net/sprites/blackwhite/female/12.png)(http://pkmn.net/sprites/blackwhite/front/628.png)

DETAILS FOR THIS ROUND:
Mix two pokémon together, one exclusive to one game of a generation, the other exclusive to the other game. Ignore exclusives for "third" games like yellow or emerald, and ignore spin-off games.
Example: purugly (exclusive to pearl) mixed with skuntank (exclusive to diamond).
Example: ekans (exclusive to fire red) mixed with misdreavus (exclusive to leaf green).

The pokémon must be from the same generation! So spinarak (exclusive to gold) mixed with lotad (exclusive to sapphire) would not be accepted. Just check a list of exclusives to make sure they're both exclusives in the same pair of games.
Don't worry about extra specifics (e.g. in-game trading): so long as the pokmémon are on the list, they should be grand.
Lists of version exclusive pokémon can be found online (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Version-exclusive_Pok%C3%A9mon), including on pkmn.net: B/W2 (http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewpage&id=8925), DP (http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewpage&id=5411).

Number of pokémon to mix: Two.
Sprites allowed: full colour, so Gen III and up. Please use an official sprite for the base, but you can scratch bits of the sprite.
Shiny colours allowed?: No.

Feel free to ask any questions, but remember: no sprite tags or animations.
Please PM your sprites to me (http://pkmn.net/forums/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1597) any time before Thursday October 10th, 6:00pm (UK/Ireland time zone).
(that is, 1:00pm EDT, 10:00am PDT). This will be when the poll closes.

Pokémon sprites can be found on pkmn.net (http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewsection&id=87), or there's the spriter's resource (http://www.spriters-resource.com/) site for any others.

Well, I don't sprite very often, but I don't see why I can't try this.

I'm giving it a go.

If one were to ass patterns as part of the recolor, would that go against specifications?
Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [Round 1: open for submissions]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 08, 2013, 15:22
yup, patterns and things are allowed.
so long as it doesn't look as though something physical has been added onto the pokemon's body, if that makes sense. basically the outline should remain the same.

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [Round 1: open for submissions]
Post by: Jackal on September 08, 2013, 15:39
I was only asking for future reference. I don't see how easy Archeops would be to work with if one were to add patterns. he has barely any surface to work on. but if anyone can then awesome!
Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [Round 1: open for submissions]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 09, 2013, 15:54
it's cool, questions are always allowed haha.
one day left for submissions woah.
four so far, so that could well work out as a trophy for everyone.
i intend to decide which sprite wins the "favourite" award before voting starts/ends, to try and stop it from influencing my decision. but not yet, in case there's (hopefully!) more entries.

Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 10, 2013, 18:12
okay, the poll is up and submissions for round 2 are now ready to be accepted!
thanks to everyone who entered, and hopefully there will be a good number of people voting.

results will be hidden until voting is over, but you can change your vote.
please don't discuss who you voted with in the topic though, otherwise there'd be no point in it being anonymous haha.

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r1! accepting entries for r2]
Post by: Jackal on September 10, 2013, 22:56
are we allowed to scratch any parts of it? just minor things, related to the two sprites being fused?
Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r1! accepting entries for r2]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 10, 2013, 23:21
you can scratch almost all of it if you like (apart from the base sprite, you should base it on an existing sprite of a fire-type pokémon).. whatever you think looks best/flows smoothly.
so if you wanted to add, say, lumineon's fins but they looked awkward having copied and pasted them, then you could draw its fins yourself directly onto the sprite. and so on. yup <:

the basic rule is that i should be able to tell which two pokémon have been fused together, and i can easily find out what base sprite you used by looking at a list of them.

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r1! accepting entries for r2]
Post by: Jackal on September 11, 2013, 01:30
Ready for another question? Say I wanted to put a pattern of a pokemon onto the base I am working with, but I already used something to fuse. Is that against regs?
Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r2! accepting entries for r3]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 14, 2013, 15:13
a bit late answering but no, you can fuse as much as you like onto the base, so long as it's still recognisable what the base was. otherwise youd end up with a stance swap rather than a mix :v

round one is over! phew. here are some trophies!
well, plaques.

sorry about the late changeover, i was out of action yesterday due to... uh... hangover. professional!
but im back now so thats grand hurray!
voting for round 2 is open and round 3 is also accepting sprites woo!
will be interesting to see how many people give it a go, but hey. if its less than four then everyone wins.

kind of defeats the point of it all being anonymous if youre telling people youll say you who voted for q:
i mean you can if you want but its a bit odd. although theoretically the sprites are anonymous anyway... if youre determined enough you can set up some kind of complex information network. or just wait until the results are revealed haha.
another day left of the voting anyway. gotta agree with JSM here personally.

i should have taken a screenshot of the poll, shouldnt i? i knew i was forgetting something.
in my defence i was quite late with it so the polls results had been displayed for almost a day afterwards.

here are the sprites from round one:

saved as jpeg here in case anyone is worried about somebody nicking their sprites or something.
in future ill just screencap the poll itself.

trying new things and messing about with pixel arts is fun... and tbh part of this is me introducing things and trying to encourage people to have a go at them.
well, more so in future rounds, i started the contests off simply enough.

More arduous waiting.

You should copy either the pokémon's original colours or its shiny colours. In garish default style, of course. So no bright red and purple caterpies, please.

I don't get this bit...

ta daaaaa, trophies have arrived.

"You should copy either the pokémon's original colours or its shiny colours. In garish default style, of course. So no bright red and purple caterpies, please."

I don't get this bit...

basically, if the pokémon is green, then you should replace the green bits with one of the greens on the palette. If it has blue stripes, you make the stripes one of the bluish colours on there.
it doesn't have to be 100% idealistic match up or anything haha. just so long as the reddish bits on the sprite are made a reddish colour, and so on and so forth.

it's just me trying to say that you shouldnt just use whatever colours you feel like would be easiest. because that wouldn't be as much of a challenge :v
/cackling away into the night

oh, i found an example of something that i did a while back for a similar competition:

It's because he is pushin the limits or the criteria to get as much out of the sprite as possible. An obvious example being that he scratched the Typhlosion mix.

what is the next round?

you mean, the round after the "limited palette bug" round?
its a secret :v
well, it will be revealed when it's time for the next round, i tend to judge it by how popular/successful the current round is to see whether i might be able to get enough people for something a bit different.
i have a list of stuff to pick from though.
basically.... tl;dr....... secret.

yes it is, so long as i havent got around to updating the OP to show the next round/putting up the next poll, the round is open :v
i may add an extra day to it because of all the kerfuffle with this whoops.
particularity as i forgot to edit the "submit by" date........wow.

yes. the current round. what is the criteria?

the criteria:
-get a bug-type sprite
-recolour it, using only the colours provided on the first page, so only these ones:

-you should stick to copying the sprite's original colours (or the shiny sprite's colours). basically some examples of what i mean:

i'm not going to be strict on this, this is just me trying to avoid getting submissions which are like the one on the right.
basically... yeah. use your imagination~~
so long as you remember that this isn't "recolour dustox as groudon", it's "recolour dustox as a limited-palette dustox".

yeah, only the colours you've got there, unaltered. to make shading more of a challenge <:

(the poll's over and i'll get the trophies here soon, but entries for the next round will remain open until tomorrow due to kerfuffle and the downtime. looks like everyone's due a trophy though wooo!)

^ As did I, I didn't particularly like Meloetta (partially because I don't like Meloetta, and partially because it looked a little too ragdoll-ish) & Gyarados was overdone imo. The magnemite one just didn't seem to be merged as well as the Espeon one.

They were all awesome though!

I use a different version of paint than the one depicted in your post... should I give you a croped image of my default palette so that you can verify?
Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r3! accepting entries for r4]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 18, 2013, 23:07
unfortunately i can't/won't accept it, i did specifically ask for the old MS paint palette to be used (hence why i provided it)... the new MS paint palette is less bright and easier to use, so less of a challenge.

Quote
DETAILS FOR THIS ROUND: using the Gen V sprite of a bug-type, recolour it using only the default palette for the old MS paint, as shown above
This is the old MS paint palette, so if you've got the default from Windows 7 and up, you'll need to copy the above and use that.

PMing the sprites to me is the ideal way to enter (as stated in the first post), but i've saved and entered it anyway. and deleted it from your post to try and avoid voting bias the best i can, so in case you were wondering where it's gone... that's where.

but yes, it's been accepted/entered. thanks <:

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r4! accepting entries for r5]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 20, 2013, 22:35
the post looked kind of empty without a sprite in it, so i improvised.

sorry for the delay!
the poll is up, and voting for round 4 is (finally) open! wow!
thank you to everyone who voted, i was half-expecting only a couple of entries but wow! you're all great.
thanks! i'm not overexcited.

i'm hoping that the specifications for round 5 should be a little less complicated.
at the very least, there's more room for imagination, so you can interpret it p much how you want, and add as little or as much detail as you'd like.
but as always, if you have any questions then please ask.

EDIT: submissions will be open until 12 hours after the poll closes.
so for your time zone... have a look at when the poll says it closes and add 12 hours (am -> pm or vice versa). that's the closing time.

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [please vote in r5! accepting entries for r6]

phew! the next round is now open, and there are trophies as well.

revamps from round II of a grass type.
you can do a simple recolour, or a complete reshade. whichever you prefer.
just a quick example there: both of those would be accepted in this case.

and of course, voting is up for round 5~

i never made a mistake.

indeed they are, confetti for all.
or plaque-trophies.

uhhh i'm leaving entries for the next round (revamps) open for at least another day, because of Stuff and Things.
also because there's only two entries so far, haha. which is cool, i know there are more sprite contests on at the moment and also term has started up again in many places.
may as well give it at least another day though :v

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [last day to enter r6: GSC revamps!]

The more sprite contest thing is my fault. Sorry.

Anyways, if I could sprite, I'd try.
Title: Re: Re: A nice sprite contest. [now accepting entries for r7! please vote in r6!]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 26, 2013, 10:16
lmao yes i am single-handedly blaming you for everything.
spoiler: that's sarcasm, more sprite contests are cool and it wasn't meant to be a dig or anything.

okay, the next poll is now up! phew.
a sudden flurry of entires happened while i was asleep, maybe because i overslept, which is very exciting!
thank you to everyone who entered!
exclamation marks mean that i'm excited!

yes okay anyway it is up and so is the next round.
this time round it's something less complicated: a mix/fusion.

due to the "sudden flurry of activity on day three", i'm going to extend the poll and entry times to three days, in a blatant rip-off of shinyblaziken's contest. don't tell him.

Didn't notice that one... What's with all of the doubles?
Title: Re: Re: A nice sprite contest. [now accepting entries for r7! please vote in r6!]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 26, 2013, 13:33
it's obviously a sign of the end days.
or as strange coincidence.
but yes it's interesting to see the different ways that people have approached things... makes me want to have a round in future where everyone revamps the same sprite.

on that note, what are people's opinions on what the rounds have been so far?
do/did you like the more "unusual" rounds? is there any kind of thing that you would particularly like to see in future? or do you think this contest should soon be drawing to a natural close?

Title: Re: A nice sprite contest. [now accepting entries for r7! please vote in r6!]
Post by: Private Delano Donut on September 26, 2013, 14:51
revamping the same sprite: yes!! revamping is fun and with the subtle differences between the venusaurs and stuff thatd be super cool?? we'd have to really look hard to judge the sprites and that would be a lot more fun than just picking one that looks cool
UH maybe im just weird.

anyway i have been super interested in the ~*~unusual~*~ things but i never get a chance to sprite them out orz

i would like more rounds so that i could get more of a chance to enter in the contest but yknow
Title: Re: Re: A nice sprite contest. [now accepting entries for r7! please vote in r6!]
Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 26, 2013, 18:23
hmmmm well i appear to have picked what i hope will be a Good Sprite To Revamp.
as in, hopefully not too complicated but with potential to put some work in if the person wants.
...
but it's a secret as to what it is. obviously.

well, there have already been two entries so far this round so... if that's any indication then hopefully i'll keep this contest going a while longer. so long as i don't wind up flogging a dead horse with it anytime soon anyway.

but yeah, if anyone has any other vague suggestions/requests for future rounds (nothing too detailed, obviously i won't reveal what it is until the round starts so that everyone's on equal footing for time).. then please do suggest them <:
may be able to turn those "???" entries for the rounds into brief descriptions in the first post.

That's fine, I'll just take it as flattery (because I know it isn't)

Post by: Sebastian Moran on September 28, 2013, 11:34
shhhh i said don't tell him!

uh yes three (3) entries so far, if you want to get in on the mixing action (wonk) then you have... well, a day and a bit. basically when the poll ends. because time zones are hard.

anyway the next round will probably be a recolour round... with borderline complicated specifications.
ok ok not that complicated, probably something that many people have done before.
after that i predict a mystery revamp.

in the meantime... poll! we have a lot of ties at the moment, which is very exciting.
and also means that there may be a lot of trophies wow.

the poll is up, and the next round is open!

if you've already entered and want to send an updated version of your sprite, then you can do that (just in case anyone wanted to, may as well say it).
