Title: getting back into it
Post by: blake. on November 16, 2014, 22:43
so with the imminent release of oras in australia I'm considering picking up one of the new 3ds xl+pokemon, as they both come out next week. being that's it's the first game I've played properly since diamond probably, there are heaps of changes that I don't know about.

what are the big differences, new mechanics and stuff coming from 4 to 6 gen? also any other games you might recommend picking up for 3ds?

The big difference is the EXP gain formula and Mega Evolutions.

EXP scales with level differential.  So a Level 23 Pokemon beating a Level 26 Pokemon will get a lot less EXP than a Level 10 beating a Level 26.  The EXP formula is favored towards giving much more EXP as well.  EXP Share in Gen 6 gives equal EXP to everyone and I don't think it splits EXP, it just straight up gives the same EXP that the party lead gets (no extra formulas with level differential or anything).

As for good games;

Bravely Default
Smash 3DS
Pokemon X/Y
Tales of the Abyss
Zelda:  A Link Between Worlds
Zelda:  Ocarina of Time 3DS
Snake Eater
Fire Emblem:  Awakening
Kingdom Hearts 3D if you like that

And there's more depending on what you like.

As for gen 6, fairy is new, obviously. It's a very defensive type imo. Also, since gen 5, you can pick in what order you face each person in the E4.

Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus Uprising are a couple that are pretty popular. I thought they were pretty good. Plus, I really like the online matches on KI.

Yes, listen to him, Fairies look weak but most of them (Klefki especially) are tanks, helped out by only being weak to Steel and Poison, Both of which are fairly rare attacking types. And they kill Dark, Dragon, and Fighting, all of which are powerful and common.

As for KIU, get. It's awesome. It's funny. It's fun. I can't give it enough praise.

big changes by the sounds of it. makes it easier to get a team together to the same level, which was always a drag. thanks for the game suggestions, i've checked some of them out.

pretty well decided i'm going to get the 3ds and ruby. it will be the 'new' 3ds as well, so if anyone has any questions about that, let me know and i can tell you on friday

Since you're picking up the new model, I recommend you check out Xenoblade Chronicles if you havent on the Wii. Its exclusive to the new model, has around 100 hours of gameplay and its a pretty good action JRPG.

Not to be pedantic but I definitely wouldn't call it an action RPG.  It's very sandbox-y.

well, its still very big and well, not exactly turn based is what I mean.

Mind you, I'm only at Prison Island on the Wii version so... ^^;

Yeah it seems to be more like FF12 for a comparison; sandbox menu-based rpg.  Action RPG is more like Nier/Tales/etc.

Gotcha.

Still, it'll be pretty impressive to fit that whole game onto a New 3DS cart, especially as it was one of the few duel layer disc Wii games. Again of course, this coming from someone who has not finished it yet.  :laugh:

Yeah I haven't finished it yet either, I'm not even sure where I am in the game right now.  I'm somewhere in the Marshes.
